A World Apart

The Crown Between Us Chapter Five: A World Apart The palace had never felt so quiet. Adrian had spent his entire life surrounded by voices. Advisors giving instructions. Nobles offering opinions. Servants announcing schedules. Yet now, as he walked through the grand halls, all he could hear was the echo of his own thoughts. The engagement proposal remained on his desk. A simple piece of paper that carried the weight of his future. Everyone expected him to accept. Everyone except himself. --- "You are making this more difficult than it needs to be." Lord Cassian stood across from Adrian in the council chamber. "The kingdom needs stability." Adrian looked at the old advisor. "And you believe a marriage without love is the answer?" Cassian sighed. "Love is a luxury for ordinary people." The words bothered Adrian more than he expected. Because he remembered a time when he believed the same thing. Before Rosewood. Before Lyra. "Perhaps that is the problem," Adrian replied. "Perhaps we have forgotten that rulers are people too." The council members exchanged uncertain looks. They had always known Adrian as a disciplined prince. A man who followed tradition. But something had changed. The crown was still on his head. But his heart was no longer willing to be silent. --- In Rosewood, Lyra tried to forget. She told herself that Adrian's world was too far from hers. A prince belonged in castles. A village girl belonged among flowers. That was how life was supposed to be. But her heart refused to accept what her mind understood. Every morning, she found herself looking toward the road. Every evening, she wondered if he had thought about her. She hated that she still hoped. Because hope was dangerous. Hope made people believe impossible things could become real. --- One afternoon, Lyra found a small envelope near her flower stall. There was no royal seal. No name. Only a short message written inside. I know I don't deserve your forgiveness yet. But I hope one day you will believe that the person you met in Rosewood was never a lie. —Adrian Lyra read the words several times. She wanted to be angry. She wanted to throw the letter away. But she couldn't. Because she knew something painful. The prince had hidden his identity. But Adrian had never hidden his heart. --- A week later, Adrian returned to Rosewood. This time, Lyra did not walk away. But she did not run toward him either. They stood facing each other, surrounded by fields of flowers. "I received your letter," she said. Adrian nodded. "I meant every word." "I know." Her answer surprised him. "Then why do you still seem distant?" Lyra looked down. "Because I don't know where I belong in your world." Adrian's expression softened. "Lyra..." "No, listen." She took a breath. "Your life is filled with people who know how important you are. People who bow to you. People who expect things from you." She looked at him. "And I am just someone from a village." Adrian stepped closer. "You are the only person who never treated me like I was above you." "That doesn't change who you are." "No." He paused. "But maybe it changes who I want to become." --- For the first time in days, they walked together again. They talked about simple things. The village. The flowers. The books they liked. For a few hours, they forgot about crowns and kingdoms. They forgot about the distance between their worlds. But happiness was not allowed to last forever. Because as the sun began to set, a royal carriage appeared on the road. Adrian's expression changed. Lyra noticed immediately. "Who is that?" He didn't answer. The carriage stopped beside them. A woman stepped out wearing a royal dress decorated with the symbol of a powerful kingdom. She looked at Adrian. Then at Lyra. And smiled politely. "Prince Adrian." The way she said his name made Lyra realize something. This was not a stranger. This was the person the palace had chosen for him. "I am Princess Evelina," the woman said. "The woman your kingdom expects you to marry." The words hung in the air. Lyra looked at Adrian. And for the first time, she wondered if love was enough to fight against a crown.
