the prince behind the crown
The Crown Between Us
Chapter One: The Prince Behind the Crown
The people of Valedria believed Prince Adrian had everything.
They saw the golden palace rising above the city, the royal banners waving in the wind, and the young prince standing beside his father during grand ceremonies.
To them, he was the perfect future king.
Strong.
Elegant.
Untouchable.
But they never saw the moments when the palace doors closed and the crown felt heavier than any sword.
Adrian stood alone on the balcony of his chambers, looking down at the kingdom he would one day rule.
Thousands of people lived beneath those walls. Thousands of lives depended on decisions he would make.
And yet, somehow, he had never felt more alone.
"Your Highness."
Adrian turned as his royal advisor entered the room.
"The council is waiting."
Adrian sighed.
"Another meeting?"
"The future of the kingdom requires preparation."
The prince almost laughed.
Everyone always spoke about the future.
The future of the kingdom.
The future of the crown.
The future of the royal family.
Nobody ever asked about his future.
Nobody asked what he wanted.
Because princes were not supposed to want things.
They were supposed to obey.
---
Beyond the palace walls, in the small village of Rosewood, Lyra Vale lived a life completely different from Adrian's.
She owned no expensive gowns.
She had no servants.
She had never entered a royal ballroom or sat at a table covered with gold.
But Lyra had something many nobles had forgotten how to find.
Happiness.
She spent her days helping her mother run their small flower shop, delivering arrangements to families across the village.
People knew Lyra for her kindness and her courage.
She was the person who stayed when others left.
The person who helped without expecting anything in return.
But Lyra had always wondered what existed beyond the village.
She dreamed of seeing the world outside Rosewood.
She dreamed of discovering that life was bigger than the streets she had always known.
She never imagined that dream would lead her straight into the path of a prince.
---
The day Adrian met Lyra began like any other royal inspection.
The prince had left the palace disguised as an ordinary traveler. He wanted to see the kingdom without guards following him, without people pretending everything was perfect because a royal was watching.
He wanted the truth.
He found it in Rosewood.
The village was louder than the palace.
Messier.
More alive.
Children ran through the streets. Merchants called out to customers. People laughed without worrying about royal manners.
For the first time in years, Adrian felt like he could breathe.
Then he saw her.
A young woman standing beside a flower stall, arguing with an old man over the price of a bouquet.
"You are charging too much," she said.
The old man smiled.
"I am charging what it is worth."
"The flowers are worth it," she replied. "But your excuse for the price is not."
Adrian couldn't help but smile.
Nobody spoke that honestly to anyone in the palace.
Especially not to him.
When Lyra noticed him watching, she raised an eyebrow.
"Do you always stare at strangers?"
Adrian was surprised.
Most people lowered their eyes when they saw him.
"I apologize," he said. "I was just impressed."
"By flowers?"
"By someone brave enough to argue with a shopkeeper."
Lyra smiled.
"Then you must not know many honest people."
Adrian looked at her for a moment.
"No," he said quietly. "I don't."
For some reason, those words made her expression soften.
Neither of them knew who the other truly was.
Neither of them knew that their worlds were never meant to meet.
A prince and a commoner.
A crown and a flower.
Two people separated by everything society believed mattered.
But sometimes the most dangerous love stories begin with a simple conversation.
And sometimes the person who changes your life is the one person you were never supposed to find.
