The Crown Between Us Chapter Six: The Forgotten Promise The silence after Princess Evelina's arrival felt heavier than any argument. Lyra stood beside Adrian, watching the princess with a calm expression that hid the storm inside her. Princess Evelina was everything the palace expected. Graceful. Elegant. Powerful. She belonged in Adrian's world. And Lyra suddenly felt the distance between them more than ever. "I did not realize we were interrupting something," Evelina said politely. Adrian's expression hardened. "You were not invited." The princess smiled slightly. "No. But neither was this." Her eyes moved toward Lyra. The message was clear. A village girl had no place beside the future king. Lyra noticed. And it hurt. --- That evening, Adrian returned to the palace with a restless heart. He had faced political conflicts. He had stood before angry nobles. He had carried the expectations of an entire kingdom. But nothing had prepared him for seeing Lyra look at him as though she was already losing him. "You cannot continue this." King Alistair's voice interrupted his thoughts. Adrian turned. His father stood at the entrance of his chamber. "Continue what?" "Running away from reality." Adrian looked away. "My reality is not a woman I have never met." The king sighed. "You think I do not understand?" That surprised Adrian. "You married for duty." "I did." "And were you happy?" The question silenced them. For a moment, the king looked less like a ruler and more like a man remembering the past. "Your mother and I learned to care for each other." Adrian lowered his eyes. "But you had a choice." The king said nothing. Because Adrian was right. --- The next morning, Adrian returned to Rosewood. He found Lyra near the old oak tree where they had shared so many conversations. She did not look surprised to see him. "I thought you would come." Adrian smiled sadly. "You did?" "Yes." She looked at the ground. "Because you always come back when you are afraid." Her words were true. And he could not deny them. "I am not afraid of the princess." "I know." Lyra looked at him. "You are afraid of losing yourself." Adrian froze. Because once again, she understood him better than anyone. --- "I don't want you to fight the whole world for me," Lyra said softly. Adrian looked at her. "Why not?" "Because I don't want to be the reason you lose everything." "You are not taking anything from me." "Am I not?" Her voice cracked slightly. "You have a kingdom waiting for you. A family. A future." She looked away. "And I am just one person." Adrian stepped closer. "You are not just one person." Lyra looked back at him. "You are the first person who made me feel like I was more than a crown." --- For a moment, neither of them spoke. The wind moved through the trees. The world felt quiet. Then Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small object. A simple silver flower pendant. Lyra recognized it immediately. "The flower you gave me." He nodded. "You gave this to me when you thought I was just Adrian." Her eyes softened. "I kept it because it reminded me of who I was before the crown became everything." He held it out to her. "I want you to keep it." Lyra hesitated. "Why?" "Because I need to remember that there is a person behind the title." She took the pendant slowly. "And what happens when the crown demands you forget?" Adrian looked at her. "Then remind me." --- For the first time in weeks, they smiled. Not because everything was fixed. It wasn't. The palace still waited. The engagement still existed. The world still stood between them. But something had returned. Hope. Before Adrian left, he turned back toward her. "Promise me something." Lyra looked at him. "What?" "Don't let the distance between our worlds make you believe you don't belong." She smiled faintly. "And you promise me something." "Anything." "Don't let the crown make you forget who you are." Adrian nodded. "I promise." Neither of them knew how difficult that promise would become. Because far away in the palace, someone was already planning to break it. And they were closer to Adrian than either of them realized.
