The Crown Between Us
Chapter Eight: The Heart of a Queen
The rumors spread faster than Adrian expected.
By the end of the week, the entire kingdom had heard the whispers.
The prince was distracted.
The prince was weak.
The prince was allowing his emotions to control him.
And the worst part was that many people believed them.
Adrian stood in the palace courtyard, watching citizens gather outside the gates.
They were not angry.
They were uncertain.
And somehow, that felt worse.
A ruler could fight anger.
But doubt was harder to defeat.
---
"You cannot ignore this."
Lord Cassian placed several reports on Adrian's desk.
"The people are losing confidence."
Adrian looked at the papers.
Every report carried the same message.
His reputation was being damaged.
His position was being questioned.
Someone was carefully controlling the story being told about him.
"Who benefits from making me look weak?" Adrian asked.
Cassian remained silent.
And that silence told Adrian everything.
There were many possible answers.
Too many.
---
Meanwhile, Lyra had begun to understand something.
The palace was not just a place of wealth and power.
It was a battlefield.
A place where people fought with words instead of swords.
Where a single rumor could destroy a person.
And now, because of Adrian, she had become part of that world.
But she refused to run.
Not this time.
---
When Adrian returned to Rosewood, he expected to find Lyra worried.
Instead, he found her working harder than ever.
"You heard about the rumors," he said.
Lyra nodded.
"Everyone has."
"Then why are you still here?"
She looked at him.
"Because leaving would mean letting them win."
Adrian was surprised.
"You are not afraid?"
"I am."
Her honesty caught him off guard.
"But being afraid does not mean giving up."
For a moment, Adrian simply looked at her.
The same girl who once arranged flowers in a small village stall was now standing beside him with more courage than many nobles in his court.
---
"You know what everyone sees when they look at me?" Lyra asked.
Adrian shook his head.
"A prince."
She smiled slightly.
"And when they look at me, they see a village girl."
She touched one of the flowers beside her.
"But flowers do not become less beautiful because they grow in a field instead of a palace garden."
Adrian smiled.
"You always find a way to make things simple."
"Maybe because people make them too complicated."
---
That evening, Adrian told Lyra everything.
The rumors.
The threats.
The possibility that someone inside the palace was trying to destroy him.
She listened carefully.
Then she asked the question he expected the least.
"What are you going to do?"
Adrian looked at her.
"I don't know."
It was the first time he had admitted that.
A prince was supposed to have answers.
But Lyra did not judge him.
Instead, she said:
"Then find them."
"Find what?"
"The answers."
She looked at him.
"But don't become the person your enemies want you to become."
Those words stayed with him.
---
The next day, something unexpected happened.
A group of villagers arrived at the palace gates.
They carried flowers.
Not weapons.
Not signs of protest.
Flowers.
The same flowers Lyra sold every day.
When Adrian asked why they had come, the village elder stepped forward.
"We know the prince who visited Rosewood."
Adrian looked surprised.
"He listened to us. He helped us. He treated us with respect."
The elder smiled.
"We do not believe the rumors."
For the first time in days, Adrian felt hope returning.
Not because he had power.
Not because he had a title.
But because people believed in the person behind the crown.
---
That night, Adrian returned to his chamber and found a message waiting for him.
No royal seal.
No signature.
Only a warning.
You cannot protect everyone you love.
Adrian's expression darkened.
Because now he understood.
The enemy was no longer trying to defeat him.
They were trying to make him choose.
The crown.
Or Lyra.
And soon, he would have to decide how much he was willing to lose for the person who had changed his life.
