The Crown Between Us Chapter Three: The Distance Between Hearts For three days, Adrian returned to Rosewood. And for three days, Lyra did not come to meet him. The first day, he waited near the flower stall, convincing himself that she only needed time. The second day, he stood beneath the old oak tree where they had shared their longest conversations. The third day, he finally understood. Lyra was not avoiding him because she hated him. She was avoiding him because she was hurt. And somehow, that was worse. Back at the palace, Adrian sat silently in the grand council chamber while his advisors discussed matters of the kingdom. Taxes. Trade agreements. Border disputes. Important things. Things that had always filled his days. But for the first time, none of them felt important. "Your Highness?" Adrian looked up. The royal advisor, Lord Cassian, stood before him with a concerned expression. "You have been distracted." Adrian straightened. "I am fine." Cassian studied him. "The crown requires your full attention." Adrian looked toward the massive windows overlooking the kingdom. "The crown has always had my attention." "Then what has changed?" Adrian said nothing. Because he knew the answer. Lyra. A girl who knew nothing about his title had somehow become the only person who made him feel like himself. --- Meanwhile, Lyra tried to convince herself that walking away had been the right choice. She returned to her normal life. The flowers still needed arranging. The customers still needed serving. The village still moved forward. But everything felt different. Every corner of Rosewood reminded her of him. The path where they walked together. The field where they talked. The place where she discovered that the simple man named Adrian was actually a prince. She hated that she missed him. She hated that a part of her still wanted to believe he was the same person she had met. Because maybe he was. Maybe the crown belonged to him. But the kindness, the laughter, and the loneliness she saw in his eyes belonged to Adrian. Not Prince Adrian. Just Adrian. --- A week later, a royal carriage arrived in Rosewood. The entire village gathered as the doors opened. But Adrian stepped out alone. No guards. No ceremony. No royal announcement. Just him. Lyra saw him from a distance and immediately looked away. "Lyra," he called. She stopped but didn't turn around. "What are you doing here?" Adrian took a slow breath. "Apologizing." She finally faced him. "An apology does not change the fact that you lied." Her words hurt because they were true. "I know." "You let me believe you were someone else." "I never wanted to deceive you." "But you did." Adrian lowered his gaze. For a prince who had faced countless challenges, admitting he was wrong was harder than any battle. "I spent my whole life surrounded by people who wanted something from me," he said quietly. "When I met you, you didn't care about the crown. You didn't care about my title. You didn't even know I had one." Lyra remained silent. "And I was afraid that if I told you the truth, I would lose the only person who saw me as more than a prince." Her expression softened slightly. "But you should have trusted me enough to tell me." Adrian looked at her. "I know." The silence between them was heavy. Not the kind of silence that meant anger. The kind that meant two people were trying to understand how much they still mattered to each other. "I don't know what happens now," Lyra admitted. "Neither do I." That answer surprised her. A prince was supposed to know everything. He was supposed to have plans. Solutions. Answers. But Adrian was standing before her without any of those things. Just a man asking for forgiveness. --- That evening, Adrian returned to the palace. But something had changed. For the first time, he no longer wanted to hide behind the crown. The crown was his responsibility. But it was not his entire identity. And Lyra had reminded him of that. However, as he entered the palace courtyard, a messenger approached him. "Your Highness." Adrian turned. The messenger bowed and handed him a sealed letter. "The king requests your presence immediately." Adrian opened the letter. His expression changed. Because inside was a message that would change everything. A royal announcement. An engagement proposal. The future of Valedria had already chosen a path for him. A path that did not include Lyra Vale. And for the first time, Adrian realized that the greatest battle of his life would not be fought with swords. It would be fought against the destiny written for him.
