The Crown Between Us
Chapter Four: The Prince’s Choice
The letter felt heavier than paper should.
Adrian had received hundreds of messages throughout his life.
Royal commands.
Political reports.
Requests from nobles.
Warnings from generals.
But none of them had ever made his heart feel as heavy as this one.
He stood alone in his chamber, staring at the royal seal broken open in his hand.
Inside was a decision that had already been made for him.
A royal engagement proposal.
A marriage arranged to strengthen an alliance between Valedria and a neighboring kingdom.
A perfect match according to the council.
A necessary sacrifice according to his father.
But to Adrian, it felt like another reminder that his life had never truly belonged to him.
---
"You cannot refuse this."
King Alistair's voice echoed through the throne room.
Adrian stood before him, trying to control the frustration burning inside him.
"I can."
The king looked surprised.
"Your duty is not something you simply walk away from."
"I understand my duty."
Adrian's voice remained steady.
"But does my duty require me to give up every choice I have?"
The room fell silent.
The royal advisors exchanged uneasy glances.
A prince was not supposed to question tradition.
A future king was supposed to obey.
"You are thinking like a young man," the king said.
"And you are asking me to live like a crown instead of a person."
For a moment, Adrian saw something change in his father's expression.
Not anger.
Something closer to disappointment.
"The crown demands sacrifice."
Adrian lowered his gaze.
He had heard those words his entire life.
Sacrifice.
Responsibility.
Duty.
But now he finally understood what they meant.
They meant giving up the things that mattered most.
They meant choosing the kingdom over himself.
They meant losing Lyra.
---
That night, Adrian stood on the balcony overlooking the palace gardens.
The lights of the kingdom stretched into the distance.
Thousands of people depended on him.
Thousands of lives would one day be placed in his hands.
He knew that.
He accepted that.
But when he thought about the future, he did not see the grand halls of the palace.
He saw Rosewood.
He saw a flower stall.
He saw a girl who laughed at him before knowing his title.
Lyra.
She had never cared about the crown.
She had never treated him like someone above her.
She had simply seen him.
And that was something he had never realized he needed until he found it.
---
Meanwhile, in Rosewood, Lyra tried to convince herself that she had made the right choice.
She focused on her work.
She arranged flowers.
She helped villagers.
She filled her days with everything except thoughts of Adrian.
But no matter how hard she tried, memories returned.
The way he smiled.
The way he listened.
The way he looked at her like she mattered.
She missed him.
And that was the part she hated most.
Because missing him meant admitting that the prince had become important to her.
---
A few days later, Adrian returned to Rosewood.
Not as a prince arriving with a royal escort.
Not as an heir demanding attention.
Just as Adrian.
Lyra looked up when she saw him approaching.
Her expression immediately became guarded.
"What are you doing here?"
Adrian stopped a few steps away.
"I wanted to see you."
"Why?"
Because I miss you.
The words almost escaped his mouth.
Instead, he said:
"Because I owe you the truth."
Lyra looked at him silently.
"I should have trusted you enough to tell you who I was."
She looked away.
"You should have."
The honesty of her answer hurt.
"I was afraid."
"Of what?"
Adrian looked at her.
"That the moment you knew I was a prince, you would stop seeing Adrian."
For a moment, Lyra said nothing.
Because she understood.
Not completely.
But enough.
"You don't get to decide what I would have done."
"I know."
"And you don't get to protect me by lying to me."
"I know."
The silence between them was different this time.
Not filled with anger.
Filled with everything they were afraid to say.
---
Before Adrian could speak again, the sound of horses interrupted them.
A royal messenger approached and bowed.
"Your Highness."
Adrian's expression changed.
The messenger handed him a sealed document.
"The council requires your answer by tomorrow."
Lyra watched as Adrian opened the letter.
She saw the change in his face.
The worry.
The conflict.
"What is it?" she asked.
Adrian looked at her.
For the first time, he looked less like a prince and more like someone afraid.
"They want me to accept the engagement."
Lyra's heart sank.
The world they came from had finally caught up with them.
Adrian folded the letter.
"I don't want this."
"But do you have a choice?"
He had no answer.
Because that was the battle he was facing.
Not against an enemy army.
Not against a rival kingdom.
But against a destiny written before he was born.
And for the first time, Prince Adrian had to decide whether he would live the life chosen for him...
or fight for the life he truly wanted.
