Chapter 1
I have prosopagnosia. I recognize people only by their distinguishing features.
The only way I could tell my husband apart was by the custom-made watch on his wrist.
Seven years into my marriage to Wesley Wynn, I found out I was pregnant.
Clutching the pregnancy report, I went looking for him.
Instead, I found him in a different suit, standing respectfully beside another man.
The man asked, "She hasn't realized in all these years that you're not her husband?"
"I've played the part well. She'll never know."
"Good." The man sneered. "That's the only use you have as my bastard brother. Remember, I only told you to keep her company for me. I never gave you permission to touch her."
That was when I finally realized the truth.
All these years, it wasn't just Wesley who had been by my side.
His half-brother, Ethan Wynn, had been there too.
And they both wore the same watch.
I threw away the pregnancy report and carried on as if nothing had happened, continuing my sweet life with Ethan.
All the while, I secretly bought a plane ticket overseas.
But when they found out I was pregnant, Wesley and Ethan chased me all the way to the airport, desperate to beg me to keep the baby.
I glanced at the two men.
"Who are you?"
*****
The night wind was bitterly cold.
I stood outside the door, unable to say a word.
After finding out I was pregnant yesterday, I had been so happy that I couldn't sleep a wink. I had even told Wesley that I had something to take care of this morning and wouldn't be home.
I had wanted to surprise him.
I never expected him to give me such a huge surprise instead.
"Wesley, I know Chloe grew up in the countryside, but she's pretty enough. How could you bear to have another man keep her company?"
When I was eighteen, I finally learned that I was the biological daughter of the Bennett family.
But having grown up in the countryside, I was naturally considered unfit for high society. So my biological parents locked me away at home.
And now, the fake heiress, Mia, was nestled against Wesley's chest, her smile vicious.
"A bastard son and a country bumpkin. They're perfect for each other."
Wesley gently stroked her cheek.
"Chloe could be as beautiful as she wants, but she has prosopagnosia. She can't even recognize her own husband. Staying by her side is nothing but a headache."
He cast a contemptuous glance at Ethan, who was standing off to the side, lost in thought.
Wesley immediately lost his temper and kicked him.
"What's that look for? You disagree with me?"
Ethan quickly shook his head.
"No. Everything you said is right, Brother."
Only then did Wesley's expression soften.
"You'd better do exactly as I say. I never gave you permission to touch her. You didn't, did you?"
A flush crept across Ethan's face, apparently recalling those reckless nights.
"No. I never touched my sister-in-law."
I silently rested a hand over my lower abdomen.
My palm felt strangely cold.
Mia pouted coquettishly.
"What, you still care if Chloe's been touched by another man?"
Wesley blew a ring of smoke toward Ethan's face.
"I've developed some feelings for her after all these years. But you know me. I have a thing about cleanliness. I hate dirty things most of all."
Another round of laughter erupted.
Only Mia didn't look particularly pleased.
"What if she stops loving you and wants a divorce?" someone slurred, clearly having had too much to drink.
Wesley snorted. Then, with unmistakable pride, he said, "As if that could happen. She was the one who insisted on marrying me back then. She even drove Mia overseas. She's madly in love with me."
No.
That wasn't what happened.
Mia had refused the arranged marriage. She said she wanted freedom, so she abandoned her boyfriend of three years and flew overseas.
To protect the family's reputation, they forced me into the car and made me marry Wesley instead.
But in Wesley's eyes, I had been nothing more than a woman desperate to marry into wealth.
"Then, Wesley, you'd better be careful that Chloe doesn't get pregnant. A woman like her would be a real handful once she has a baby."
Wesley's expression turned cold.
"Don't worry. No one else would dare touch her. Besides, even if she does get pregnant, we can just get rid of it."
Ethan remained expressionless, his eyes lowered, looking every bit like a man willing to obey his brother's every command.
"Yeah. You're right."
But in bed, he had been nothing like this.
He would place a hand over my lower abdomen and ask me again and again,
"Chloe, did you get pregnant with my baby?"
Back then, I never understood why he was so obsessed with covering up the marks left on my skin the night before.
Now, everything was clear.
I stared at the watch on his wrist, feeling a strange sense of disorientation for the first time.
Which days had it been Ethan?
And which days had it been Wesley?
All I knew was that Ethan was the one standing there.
Wesley was the one holding another woman in his arms.
Wesley glanced at the time.
"For Chloe's birthday party next week, are you going, or am I?"
Wesley fell silent for a moment, staring into the distance as if lost in thought.
Then Mia suddenly clapped her hands.
"I have an idea! Why don't you both show up? Let Chloe figure out which one of you is her husband. Then you can tell her the truth right to her face. What do you think?"
Both Wesley and Ethan froze.
A moment later, Ethan lowered his head.
"I'll do whatever you decide."
Wesley nodded in satisfaction and gently patted Mia's hand.
"You really won't even let her have some peace on her birthday."
Mia puffed out her cheeks.
"She married you in my place. The least I can do is embarrass her a little."
"Fine. We'll do it your way."
With trembling hands, I tore the pregnancy report into pieces and then crawled beneath the covers.
The tears came despite everything. I wiped them away, only for more to fall.
They wanted to humiliate me?
Fine.
I'd like to see who ended up being the one humiliated.
