I sighed, “I had a problem dealing with my emotions and the dreams after my parents’ death. I snuck out of the shroud and bought some pills. I used them for a couple months until Heath caught me at Thanksgiving. He got me help. I detoxed and now… I deal with my pain both emotionally and physically. I don’t go near drugs. I just can’t do it. If I get hurt, I deal with the pain until I can have Haley heal me. I don’t even take Tylenol or anything. I promised Heath when he found me about to take another pill that there would be no more lies between us.” Chase was silent for a long time, “You are so strong Lexi.” I sighed, “I wasn’t strong.” Chase said, “Many people can’t stop doing drugs once they start Lexi. You even realize you can’t take things that suppress your pain. It takes a strong person to walk away. I’m glad you did. I’m glad your brother helped you.” I smiled, “Me too. He was my rock during that entire experience.” Chase said, “You should tell him about me. As your brother. I think it would mean a lot to him.” I smiled and kissed Chase. “Tell me about you. The part of you that doesn’t involve your situation.” Chase smiled, “I am the oldest of my siblings. You’ve met both of them, Cameron, and Susie. You know Cameron recently took over a pack. My mother died when I was a teenager. It was a rogue attack. She protected some pups getting them time to get to our warriors. She was distracted for one second, and it cost her. Our warriors were right there, but a rogue got a hold of her neck and snapped it. My father blames himself and tends to lock down Susie because of it. It wasn’t his fault. None of us were even there. We’d gone to a meeting with an ally. A year later he met his second chance mate, Nadine. Susie quickly followed.”
I said, “How do you feel about Nadine?” Chase smiled, “Love her. She’s made my dad so happy. For a while, I didn’t know if he’d still be here with us. He pulled it together for Cameron and me… but without Nadine coming into the picture...Once I’d taken over the pack, I don’t think he would be with us today if not for her.” I rubbed his shoulders, “I’m sorry about your mom. I know how that is.” Chase said, “Thank god I didn’t see it. I can’t imagine that Lexi. I’m so sorry that happened to you.” I said, “I wish it hadn’t. I wish I could remember the man that killed my parents. Heath has been searching for leads, but I just can’t remember his face.” Chase was quiet then said, “You don’t know that’s who killed them Lexi. You said yourself, you went to sleep. Just because they were arguing with the man you saw, does not mean that man killed them.” I sighed, “That’s what Heath says. Whether he killed them or not, he has information that could help us.” Chase snorted, “While I can’t imagine your brother would like me in this current moment; I’d like to think we’d get along otherwise. He seems like a smart guy.” I looked at the time and sighed, “I need to get ready to meet Ted at the office.” Chase frowned, “I should see Susie off to her first day and interview the new guards.” He crushed me to him, “I don’t know how to leave you.” I wrapped my legs around his torso, “When you figure it out, you let me know.” I kissed him. We were already naked, and somehow the man already had me soaking wet. I lifted myself up and slid down onto him. “Lexi” Chase hissed. I smiled, “I’ve got to make sure you have something to get through the day.” Chase growled. I rode him through my completion, and he followed after. I kissed him on the mouth and got up and went into my shower. I turned on the water and stepped in once it was warm.
Arms circled around my waist. Chase nipped my ear, “My turn.” He slammed into me from behind. I put my hands on the shower wall. “Chase…. OH GOD!” How was I already so close? What was he doing to me? Chase’s hands were everywhere again. I lost myself in him. We eventually managed to get out of the shower. I grabbed a white pencil skirt with black lines, and a black long-sleeved top. Chase groaned and came up behind me. I could feel his breath and, on my neck, “How am I supposed to get anything done knowing you are out there looking like this?” I smiled, “You’re naked so I’m pretty sure I win that question.” Chase smirked, “There are shorts outside for me.” I said, “You should probably bring some clothes over with you tonight.” I slammed my mouth shut, “I mean… If you were...if you wanted to come over tonight.” Chase turned me around and kissed me, “I’m coming over every single night until I move you to our home. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.” I looked into his eyes and smiled, “I’m not always here.” Chase snorted, “I’ll be here. Maybe I’ll even leave the porch light on for you.” I laughed, “I’ll cook you dinner tonight if you can get away.” Chase smiled, “Seven work for you?” I thought through my day, “Seven should be fine. This is going to quite possibly the strangest sentence to ever come out of my mouth. Can you put your number in both my phones? Since you're my string and all, I feel like we should exchange numbers.” Chase kissed me, “You’re so damn cute sweetheart. I feel honored I get to be in the burner phone only Haley and Ted have the number to.” My cheeks burned, “Yeah, well…. You’re in an elite group. Plus, if my brother sends me somewhere, I keep that burner phone on me.” Chase stiffened, “Any chance he won’t send you out on misses… possibly ever again?” I smiled, “I’m on a sort of break until Halloween.” Chase frowned, “I have a wedding to go to on Halloween.”
I smiled, “Lacy Lyons by chance?” Chase said, “Lacy and Beta Dylan, yes.” I smiled, “I wish I could go. I’m going to send her a present though.” Chase said, “Will you take Kevin and Kincade with you for what you’re doing on Halloween?” I thought about it, “Depends on what I’m doing. We can talk about it once I have details.” Chase frowned, “I suppose that’s the best I could ask for.” I laughed, “It is. I’m quite reasonable.” Chase smiled, “You are.” We walked outside and saw Kevin and Kincade waiting at the barrier. Chase snorted, “It’s funny because now I see what you saw?” Kevin and Kincade’s heads snapped to us. “Alpha?” Chase said, “Yes, Kevin.” Kevin said, “It’s creepy. That’s what it is. Downright. Creepy.” I laughed and we stepped outside the barrier. Chase put on some shorts and kissed me, “I have to go. I’ll see you tonight.” I waved, “Bye Chase.” I turned, “We will be at the office eventually, but I have to step back inside and make a call.” Both nodded and I went back inside and shut the door. I picked up my phone smiling. I sent Chase a quick text from both my phones, so he’d have my numbers. I shook myself and called heath. “Lexi. I wasn’t expecting to hear from you today. I just got home from Kentucky. If that’s what you were calling about. That pack will never bother Ted again.” I said, “I need to talk to you. In person.” I heard Noah say, “We have work to do.” I said, “Good thing I said I needed to see my brother, and not you lieutenant.” Noah said, “Lexi… let’s not do this.” I said, “I had no intention of doing this. I called my brother, not you.” Noah hissed, “You haven’t called me in three years.” I said, “I wonder why. OH wait… No I don’t. Heath.” Heath said, “Our place?” I said, “Alone. Just you. He’s there and I can’t be held responsible for my actions.” I hung up.
I called Haley. “Good morning Lexi.” I smiled, “It is mostly a good morning. I heard the troll’s voice when I called my brother... so he’s trying to dampen my mood. I need a favor.” Haley said, “You want me to kill the f*****g troll? Done.” I laughed, “Not today.” Haley groaned, “Damn it!” I said, “I need you to do your space unheard chant to the area my parents are buried in. I need it done now actually. Sorry for the late notice, but I wouldn’t put it past Noah to try and spy on Heath and I’s conversation.” Haley said, “Consider it done. I’ll pop there now.” I heard a growl. Haley said, “Of for f**k’s sake you can come too. It will take less than thirty seconds.” Haley hung up and I laughed.” I went outside. “I’m going to the place I met my brother at god… yesterday. How does that feel like a year ago at this point? I’ll race you. Just stay back so he doesn’t see you please.” Kincade said, “Yes, Luna.” I laughed, “Oh god… I’m Luna Lexi. Let’s just go with Lexi since I’m not your official Luna.” Kevin said, “You are our Alpha’s mate. You will always be Luna to us, but we can call you Lexi if you prefer.” I smiled, “I do prefer Lexi. Race ya!” I took off. I smiled seeing Heath was already there. I saw Noah at a distance. “Really Heath?” Heath looked at me then looked where I was staring. His face darkened, “Noah! LEAVE!” Noah looked confused. I said, “He can’t hear you.” Heath turned to me, “Haley?” I nodded. Heath flipped Noah off and turned me, “What’s going on?” I walked to his other side and led him out of Noah’s eyesight. I had to lead him around a boulder to a bench Haley had set up for me. I came here to think sometimes.
I sat down satisfied Noah couldn’t see us or even attempt to read lips. “I didn’t tell him to follow me. In fact, I told him to stay away.” Heath told me. I shrugged, “He’s the worst. What’s new? Not why I called.” Heath said, “I thought you called for an update on that pack in Kentucky, but that’s clearly not the case.” I said, “I have two things to tell you one as my brother and the Hood, the other as my brother and my brother alone. Like you said I could. Which do you want to hear first?” Heath smiled, “Let’s go with brother and the hood.” I said, “Someone is following both of us. An older man. One who seems to show interest in both of us, and cares about us.” Heath’s face darkened, “Did you catch him?” I shook my head, “I was told about him. I thought I was being followed but didn’t see anyone when I turned around. I’m told the man followed you after we left here the other day.” Heath stood to pace, “Who told you?” I said, “That’s a bit sticky as it bleeds into the thing, I’m only telling my brother and not the Hood.” Heath groaned, “Of course it does. What is it you are just telling me as your brother?” I smiled, “I met my string.” Heath smiled, “Did you really?” I nodded, “Yes, with everything going on in both of our lives we are keeping it quiet. I’m telling you and Ted.” Heath was surprised, “You’re not telling Haley.” I sighed, “That’s actually complicated. It's a whole bag of struggling cats right now, but I’m not telling her met him yet.” Heath smiled, “But you’re telling me that you met your string.” I said, “As my brother who will not utter a single word to your Lieutenant or anyone else. I’m trying Heath. You said I had walls. I don’t want that. Not with us.” Heath stood and started to pace.
After several moments he sat back down, “I am resisting every instinct in my body to lock you down until we find out who’s following us. That would take you from your string though, and I know that you had to have met him recently.” I said, “Yesterday evening.” Heath smiled and said, “But he was following you that afternoon to see someone else following you?” I said, “Pretty much sums it up.” Heath said, “What is he?” I said, “That’s not really on the table right now.” Heath said, “As in you aren’t telling me, or you don’t know.” I said, “As in not telling you. This is a big thing for me Heath. I’m terrified Noah will find out and try to ruin this for me.” Heath said, “Why would he do that?” I said, “Do you actually want an answer?” Heath said, “Why else would I ask?” i said, “Because he’s a lying narcissist asshole who likes me being in pain. So I can’t imagine he will take it well that I’ve officially moved on. I’m over him but we all know he doesn't believe that.” Heath looked shocked then said slowly, “You don’t believe him. About feeling the pull to you. You think he did that to hurt you?” I said, “It’s not that I just don’t believe him, Heath. I KNOW he’s lying to everyone about it.” Heath said, “You’ve never talked to him about that day. He’s so sincere Lexi. It tore him up that he hurt you.” I said, “I’m sure he is convincing. It doesn’t change what I know, and one day if you ask me. I’ll tell you why Heath, but you need to know… You’ll walk away with knowledge that your best friend isn’t who he portrays himself to be.” Heath stood, “f**k! I need him right now.” I said, “Be careful then Heath. Watch him but don’t let him know you are. I think you’ll be surprised at what you find.” Heath said, “What does that mean?” I said, “Just watch him Heath. You’ll figure it out.” I studied Heath. He was taking me seriously. He was going to observe Noah, and he was going to find out what he was doing to Sally and me. Once Heath knew… Noah was out of luck. Not just about me, but about Sally. Heath wouldn’t accept Noah treating her this way. She was one of his people.
Heath gave me a hug, “I’m glad you told me about your string, Lex. Or about finding him. I’m glad we are talking. I will look into who’s following us discreetly. I will protect us.” I said, “And when your lieutenant suggests I stay in the shroud kick him in the balls for me, please.” Heath lips twitched, “I’m not sure that’s the best idea.” i said, “It’s how I feel. He deserves a kick to the balls, honestly. Better I ask you than Haley.” Heath said, “I’ll get your feelings across without kicking him in the balls.” I smirked, “A punch to face? I’m really open to many possibilities.” Heath laughed, “I’ll see you later Lex. Enjoy your string. Don’t hide yourselves for too long. I want to meet him. He better be good enough for my baby sister. I won’t see you hurt again.” I smiled, “He’s a really good guy.” Heath said, “Who you met last night, but are already calling a good guy? You, my little sister whose walls are higher than Mount Everest. Well I’ll be damned. Now I have to meet this guy.” I laughed, “Go solve the world’s problems Heath.” Heath hugged me again, “The world would mean nothing to me without you Lex. Call me anytime. It was a pleasant surprise. On both fronts. Normally you’d tell me we were being followed as you handed me the guy who’d been following us.” I said, “I’m trying this whole new thing.” Heath laughed, “As I said. I like this guy.” I said, “Hey now! This isn’t about him. It’s about what you said the other day. I love you Heath, and I don’t want you to be at arm’s distance. I want you front and center. Without your horrid sidekick.” Heath rolled his eyes and messed with my hair, “I’ll see you around little sister.” I said, “Not if I see you first.” I took off. I could hear Noah’s scream of anger before I made it back to my place. It was that loud. He had no right to be upset about someone following me. My phone beeped
Heath: I did actually punch Noah
Me: What did he do?
Heath: He called me stupid for letting you go to your house here instead of carrying you home kicking and screaming with someone following you.
Me: I’d get out
Heath: I know
I put my phone away and got into my car. I rolled down the window, “Wouldn’t you boys rather ride in the car?” Both came out in shorts. I laughed, “Seems we are going to have to stockpile jeans and t-shirts in the office and Ted and I’s cars. Kevin got in the front and Kincade got in the back, “Thank you for the ride Lexi.” I smiled, “You get an office too.” Kevin smiled, “That will be nice.” Kincade said, “And easier to protect you.” I said, “My office is fairy enchanted.” Kincade groaned, “To do what?” I said, “So no one can hear my meetings.” Kevin said, “Then… we need a panic button.” I said, “Seems like a logical request. You figure that out logistically, and we will get it done.” Kincade smiled, “You are very easy to get along with.” I smiled, “Matter of pride with me. I pick my battles. You two being able to help out in a situation where for example eight demons pop up with tranquilizer darts is ideal. A panic button so Chase doesn't get upset with you if eight demons’ shimmer into my office helps everyone. If you request something unreasonable. I’ll fight you on it.” Kevin snorted, “Noted.” I walked into the office at nine thirty. Ted glared at me, “I was WORRIED sick! You are ALWAYS here at nine. I could set my clock by you being here by that time. Matt kept assuring me you were fine. How he knows this you ask? I don’t know because he won’t say!” Ted looked behind me, “Never mind, I see how he knows this. Are they my guards?” I said, “No, they are mine.” Ted did a double take, “Totally looking hot today girl says what?” I sighed. I went into my office and got out a key. I handed it to Kincade, “This to the office right across the hall. You can set it up however you like. In true hotel form, it looks JUST like this room.” Kevin laughed as they walked out of the room.
Ted walked in, “Spill. Don’t think I don’t see those hickeys on your neck. Because I do. We are going to get there; don’t think we are skipping that, but I want to know why you have guards. I have a theory, but it’s lacking.” I sat down, “What’s your theory?” Ted said, “You banged Alpha Chase so well he wants his f**k buddy guarded because you’re the best s*x he’s ever had.” I laughed, “Not completely wrong.” Ted shrieked, “NOT COMPLETELY WRONG?! THOSE HICKEY’S ARE FROM ALPHA CHASE?! You said you didn’t want to meet him! Because of your string…. oh.my.god. Sandalwood. You’ve been smelling sandalwood. Your body tenses just like I tensed and smelled apple pie. GIRL TELL ME YOU ARE THE LUNA AND I’M THE BETA MALE! TELL ME! TELL ME! TELL ME! TELL ME!” Ted was bouncing up and down in his chair, “Yes, but we're keeping that quiet for now.” Ted shouted, “QUIET?! Are you kidding?!” He went to his knees and clasped his hands, “War Goddess I will never doubt you again so long as live. You are the real MVP of ALL the goddesses. ME AND MY GIRL TOGETHER FOREVER!” Ted stood and hugged me, “Does my Matt know?” I said, “I believe he does.” Ted said, “OHHH he’s gonna get it good. Just like you gave it to Alpha Chase good. Wait… you’re not marked.” I said, “Sit, I’ll explain.” Ted sat down and I had his complete attention, “Alpha Chase has some situation in his life.” Ted said, “Yes, yes, yes. I know. Haley told you that your string did. OH MY GOD! DOES HALEY KNOW YOU MET HIM?” I said, “Not yet. As I said. We are keeping things quiet right now. He’s still dealing with a situation, but he doesn't want to mark me until his life is in order.” Ted thought about it, “Alright, mad level of respect going for the Alpha Chase right now. Respecting my girl. So… how was it?”
I smiled, “It was amazing.” Ted said, “Wait how did you meet?” I sighed, “Eight demons shimmered in to pay Diane a visit.” Ted’s eyes went hard, “MOTHERFUCKING LEAK!” I said, “Yeah, they wanted me to give them the Black Arrow for killing Unger.” Ted said, “Peak irony. Continue.” I sighed, “Fighting ensued. Those two guys you just met showed up to fight with me. Chase came in and dove on top of me to take a tranq in the side.” Ted said, “Sure, couldn’t have shifted and yelled. Run Lexi. We are freaky fast. Heat of the moment though I guess. I’ll let it pass that he forgot. Plus, that’s hot. So he shifted and you were under his naked rock solid body.” I laughed, “He was passing out. I realized he was my string. I took my back to my house.” Ted said, “Naturally. You naughty little minx. You wanted a piece of Alpha Chase. WAIT! You took him home as in…” I said, “As in my fairy protected house.” Ted shrieked, “GIRL! I am so proud. Tell me you got that D all night long. Tell me… Come on… Tell TeleTed.” I said, “It was well into the morning Ted.” Ted said, “YESSS that werewolf stamina. Come on, tell me I was right.” I laughed, “You were right. It’s certainly something.” Ted said, “So… are you moving into the pack house?” I said, “Ted. Closed circle. Keeping it quiet. I have said this many times. You said you could keep a secret. OH and if you find out what Chase’s situation is. Don’t tell me. I told him, and now I’m telling you. I don’t want to know.”
Ted frowned, “Ignorance is only bliss until the situation smacks you in the face.” I said, “I’m happy. I feel like everything in me clicked into place. I don’t want to know what’s standing in my way. With anyone else…. I’d knock whatever it is out of my way, but with Chase...I don’t think I can handle Ted. Not right now. I just want to be happy. I don’t want to be told something that will make me want to not to feel again.” Ted stiffened. I continued, “If I change my mind, I’ll ask him. I know he’d tell me. He wants to tell me. I just know me Ted, and right now…. I need to not know.”
