Chapter twenty-one A REQUEST Gabriella made her way inside the local library, walking along the grass-lined concrete path. The pitched roof and brown brick made it look like a small house. Tilting trees, hedges, and bushes framed the front of the building. The gentle breeze feathered her cheek as she pulled open the glass door and stepped inside the quiet space. She walked over to the fiction section of books, searching for books on contemporary romance, which she could read at night before bed. People sat at computers or read inside cubicles while others bowed their heads to work with piles of textbooks at their sides. She picked up one a romance novel, turning the book over and read the blurb. She put it aside and focused on another, but as she put it back, she spotted a gloved hand
