I splashed cold water on my face, trying hard to figure out my next move.
My father called, immediately launching into a furious lecture. "Who gave you permission to call off the engagement? The Rabbitfolk are weak. Do you have any idea how much we stand to gain from marrying into the Dragonkin? Get back there right now and apologize to Tristan!"
"Father, the Rabbitfolk can't survive like a clinging vine, relying solely on the Dragonkin. We have to stand on our own feet. Otherwise, if we ever lose their backing, we'll end up in a miserable state."
"Shut up! That's not for you to decide! Your only value is marrying into the Dragonkin!"
I was left speechless. The last shred of hope I had for my father vanished completely.
"I'm not going. But since you're so desperate to marry into the Dragonkin, why don't you marry Tristan yourself?"
I hung up with a sharp tap and immediately blocked his number, cutting off his furious roars.
Soon after, a notification popped up saying my cards had been frozen. Staring at the mere 200 left on my app, my temple throbbed.
I wandered aimlessly through the streets, not daring to go back to my place for fear of being dragged back by bodyguards.
To make matters worse, rain began to pour down in sheets, leaving me drenched like a rat.
A Maybach slowly pulled up beside me. It was Tristan.
With Chloe in his arms, his brow furrowed slightly. "Clara, why do this to yourself? Just swallow your pride, and the title of my wife will always be yours. It's in a dragon's nature to be promiscuous, but my heart will always belong to you. If you don't like Chloe, I'll just find someone else."
Chloe timidly tugged at Tristan's sleeve, not daring to say a word.
Hearing Tristan make such a grandiose, shameless excuse made me feel like all my past devotion had been thrown to the dogs.
I forced a smile. "Then can I try things out with other humans too?"
Tristan's face turned cold. "Clara, who gave you the audacity to even think about seeing other people behind my back?"
"You're such a hypocrite! You can't stand the thought of me betraying you, yet you're cheating on me without a single shred of remorse. Just leave. Your so-called love only disgusts me!"
Tristan sneered. "Clara, this is the last chance I'm giving you. I hope you don't regret this!"
The car sped away.
'Damn Tristan! He even splashed dirty water all over me as he drove off!'
I took off my soaked coat, shivering as the cold wind whipped against me.
I squatted by the roadside, wrapping my arms tightly around myself for warmth. Just when I thought I would have to spend the night on the streets, the rain suddenly stopped.
I looked up and saw someone holding an umbrella over me from behind.
His face was half-hidden in the shadows, making it hard to see his features clearly.
But his voice was filled with playful amusement. "Poor Clara. What would you ever do without me?"
