RECOUNTING
The silence of my room was shattered by his voice as the line went dead. I froze. A strict wave of panic washed over me, cold as ice. How did he know my surname? I hadn't even given him my name let alone my family's name. I scrambled out of bed, the silk of my nightie fluttering as I lunged for the bag I'd carry to the library. My hands hooked as I dug through it searching for my diary. But then, a flashback hit me like an alarm bell. I remembered the library - the way I'd jolted back to my senses after his claim of ownership. I remembered hurrying to the table, grabbing my bag and rushing out.
I never took my diary out, how did he end up with it? I fell back onto the bed , my mind a messy loop of questions until exhaustion finally forced my eyes shut. I woke up late, sun burning through my curtains. s**t !! I was late. Mrs Helen, the manager of the jewelry shop hated late comers with a strict passion. As I rushed to dress, a shadow followed me.I'd had a nightmare, a glitch in my sleep too terrifying to keep, very awful that I couldn't remember the content.
PLAYED GOD
The morning only got worse. I realized my purse, containing my phone and the little cash I had was stolen. I spent the next one hour searching for it in a nausea of panic but it was gone. I was already two hours late when I pushed through the glass door. The atmosphere was unstable and Mrs Helen didn't even let me clock in. Zahra ! Again? Am fed up with your nonsense. You stroll in here like you own the place, she scolded.
The other workers snickered. Ophelia, the worst of them, muttered loud enough for everyone: “ maybe if she didn't trek here everyday like a begger, she'd be on time. “ I'm not paying you for today,” Mrs Helen snapped. Ophelia shoved me. Hard. My hip slammed into the display case and I went down, palms scrapping tiles. As they laughed at my “ suffering”. “ you're not meant to be here,” one of the girls said hissing as she pulled my hair.
“ STOP.“ The voice was a command. We all turned. There he was. He wasn't the library boy anymore. He was dressed in black leather clothes that made him look like an assassin on a mission. He didn't waste time with Mrs Helen; he pulled out his phone, dialed, and said to whoever picked up, to fire her.
He walked over and picked me up from the floor as if l was a relic he was protecting.
SINCE I SAW HIM
He led me outside towards a sleek, apex car, but the moment the air hit my face, I snapped. I ripped my arm free and shoved him. He didn't budge. “ stay away from me! “ I screamed, my voice breaking. “ since I saw you yesterday, my entire life has crashed! Have become insane, thinking only of you. I had sleepless night, I lost my purse, I lost my phone, and now, because of you, I've lost my job!“
I didn't wait for his response. I turned and walked away, leaving him behind and pretending I couldn't feel him watching me leave.
