The Kingdom of Eryndor is a vast, matriarchal realm where power and wealth are passed down through women. Noblewomen hold all the political and military authority, and men are largely seen as companions or pawns in their dynastic strategies. In Eryndor, women are allowed to take multiple lovers, while men are punished harshly for being involved with more than one woman. It is a world built on strict rules of power, with an emphasis on loyalty and control.

Chapter One: The Heir of Aelwyn
The kingdom of Eryndor stretched out in every direction, its endless valleys dotted with castles ruled by powerful women, the matriarchs who governed the lands and commanded armies. In this world, the line of succession passed from mother to daughter, and the great duchies flourished under the leadership of noblewomen. Men served, fought, and pledged loyalty, but the crown, the estates, and the titles were always a woman’s right. In the heart of this kingdom stood the imposing seat of House Aelwyn, one of the oldest and most respected families in the realm. High upon a hill, the stone walls of Aelwyn Keep cast long shadows over the surrounding lands, a reminder of the power held by its ruling family. Within those walls, a young girl was being prepared for the weight of a future that would one day rest entirely on her shoulders. Elara Aelwyn, heir to the duchy, was only twelve, but already she carried herself with the poise and grace expected of a future duchess. Her tutors praised her intelligence, her father, the Duke, marveled at her ability to learn quickly, and the court whispered that she would grow to be a formidable leader. Elara was destined to inherit her father’s lands, to rule over the Aelwyn estates and govern with the strength that had defined her ancestors. Yet, despite her future as a powerful duchess, Elara still found joy in simpler things—like racing through the castle gardens on a stolen afternoon, her laughter echoing through the courtyards. And always by her side was Calen. Calen was not noble by birth. He was the son of a common soldier who had served the Duke faithfully until his death. After his father’s passing, the Duke had taken Calen in, raising him alongside Elara as if they were siblings. Despite the clear difference in their stations, the two had been inseparable since childhood. Where Elara was poised and polished, Calen was wild and free. He was the only person who made her feel like more than the heir to a great house—he made her feel like just a girl. That morning, Elara found herself sneaking away from her lessons, leaving her tutor exasperated as she slipped through the winding halls of Aelwyn Keep. She had promised to meet Calen by the stables, where they often escaped the suffocating expectations of the court. As she rounded the corner, she spotted him leaning casually against the stable door, his dark hair falling into his eyes as he smiled at her approach. “You’re late,” he teased, pushing off the wall as she neared. Elara smirked, rolling her eyes. “I’m the future Duchess of Aelwyn. I can’t be late.” Calen grinned, his usual cocky expression in place. “Ah, of course. Future duchesses are never late. They just keep everyone else waiting.” “Exactly,” she shot back, though her smile softened the words. There was an ease between them that Elara treasured, a comfort in knowing that with Calen, she didn’t have to be perfect. They mounted their horses and set off through the fields beyond the keep, the wind tugging at their hair as they raced along the open plains. For a while, there was only the sound of hooves thudding against the earth and the occasional burst of laughter from Elara as she urged her horse to go faster. Calen, always competitive, pulled ahead, turning to shout over his shoulder, “Is that the best you’ve got, future duchess?” Elara’s eyes narrowed playfully, and she spurred her horse forward, determined to catch him. They rode like that for miles, the world blurring around them, until they reached the edge of the woods where the trees cast long shadows over the path. They slowed their horses, breathless but exhilarated. Elara slid off her horse and looked around, her heart still racing from the thrill of the ride. This place, this secluded glade, had always been their sanctuary—a place where no one could find them, where the pressures of their lives seemed to melt away. Calen dismounted as well, his usual grin still in place. He was tall for his age, lean and wiry, with a roguish charm that seemed to follow him everywhere. Elara had always admired how easily he seemed to navigate the world, how he could laugh and shrug off the burdens that weighed her down. They sat by the riverbank, watching the water flow past, and for a moment, there was only the sound of the wind rustling through the leaves and the gentle murmur of the stream. “Do you ever think about what it’ll be like?” Elara asked suddenly, breaking the comfortable silence. Calen glanced at her, raising an eyebrow. “What?” “When I’m duchess,” she said softly, her gaze fixed on the water. “When I’m in charge of all this. The land, the people… It feels like a lot sometimes.” Calen was quiet for a moment, his usual teasing demeanor fading. When he spoke, his voice was softer than usual. “You’ll be a great duchess, Elara. You were born for this.” Elara smiled at his words, but there was a heaviness in her chest that wouldn’t go away. “Sometimes, I just want to be… me. Not the heir. Not the future duchess. Just Elara.” Calen was silent for a moment, his eyes thoughtful as he looked at her. “You’re always just Elara to me.” Her heart fluttered at his words, a warmth spreading through her chest. She had always loved how easy things were with Calen, how he made her feel like she could be herself, even with all the expectations placed on her. But even as she smiled, a part of her wondered if Calen saw her the way she saw him. Over the years, her feelings for him had shifted from friendship to something more, something deeper. But Calen had never given any sign that he felt the same way. He was always teasing, always playful, but never anything more. Elara pushed the thought away, not wanting to dwell on it. She had more important things to worry about—like her future as duchess and the responsibilities that came with it. Still, as they sat there by the river, the warmth of Calen’s words lingered, making her wonder if there was a chance he could ever feel the same.
