the day everything changed
The room that had always been Aria Bennett's safe place no longer felt like home. Half-filled cardboard boxes sat against the walls. Her bookshelf, once crowded with novels and framed photos, now looked painfully empty. Clothes were folded into neat piles on her bed, waiting to disappear into another suitcase. Aria sat cross-legged on the floor, hugging a throw pillow against her chest as she stared blankly at the window overlooking the neighborhood she'd lived in for eighteen years. Everything was changing. Too fast. "You've been staring out that window for ten minutes." Aria turned toward the familiar voice. Lara Johnson stood in the doorway, balancing two cups of iced coffee and a paper bag of meat pies. "You look like someone just announced the end of the world." Aria let out a humorless laugh. "It kind of feels like it." Lara placed the food on the floor before wrapping her best friend in a tight hug. "I still can't believe you're actually leaving." "Neither can I." They pulled apart, settling onto the rug. For a few moments, neither of them spoke. The silence was heavier than either of them wanted to admit. Finally, Lara nudged Aria's shoulder. "So...tell me everything again." Aria sighed. "My mom met some man six months ago." "The mysterious billionaire." "Apparently." "They dated for six months..." "They got engaged." "And now they're married." Aria nodded. "Just like that." Lara blinked. "That's still insane." "I know." "You've never even met him." "No." "And now you're moving into his house?" "Tomorrow." Lara threw her hands into the air. "Your mom has officially become the queen of surprises." Aria managed a small smile before it disappeared just as quickly. "She keeps telling me he's kind." "And?" "I don't know." "She says he's patient." "Mhmm." "He owns some huge company." "Of course he does." "And..." Aria rolled her eyes dramatically, "...she won't stop talking about his son." Lara smirked. "The famous stepbrother." Aria groaned. "Don't." "What?" "She keeps saying, 'You'll love Kael.'" Lara burst into laughter. "'You'll love Kael'?" "Every single day." "Oh, this is getting interesting." "It isn't." "What if he's nice?" "What if he's spoiled?" "What if he's cute?" "Lara." "What?" "I'm serious." "So am I." Aria buried her face in the pillow. "I don't want another family." Lara's smile faded. "I just wanted more time with my mom." "So tell her." "I tried." "And?" "She said this is a chance for both of us to have a better future." Aria looked around her bedroom. The pale blue walls. The tiny desk where she'd spent countless nights studying. The fairy lights she'd convinced her father to hang before he passed away years earlier. Every memory in this room belonged to the life she knew. Tomorrow, she'd leave it all behind. "I'm scared," she admitted quietly. Lara reached for her hand. "I know." "I've lived in this city my whole life." "I know." "My school." "I know." "Our café." "I know." "Our movie nights." "I know." "Our stupid tradition of buying ice cream every Friday." Lara smiled sadly. "I'm going to miss those too." Aria felt tears gathering in her eyes. "What if everything changes?" Lara squeezed her hand. "Everything will change." Aria looked at her. "But that doesn't mean you'll lose yourself." A tear slipped down Aria's cheek. "What if they don't like me?" "They'll be idiots." "What if I don't fit in?" "You've never fit in." Aria frowned. "Thanks." Lara laughed. "I mean it in the best way." She pointed at Aria's chest. "You're different." "You care too much." "You overthink everything." "You read romance novels until three in the morning." "You cry over fictional characters." "I do not." "You absolutely do." Aria couldn't stop herself from laughing. "There she is." "What?" "My best friend." Lara smiled warmly. "No matter where you move..." "No matter how rich these people are..." "No matter how handsome this so-called stepbrother turns out to be..." Aria rolled her eyes. "...you'll still be the same annoying girl who steals my fries." "I don't steal your fries." "You absolutely do." They both laughed, the tension easing for the first time that day. Then Lara reached into her bag and pulled out a small silver keychain shaped like a crescent moon. "I got you something." Aria took it carefully. It was simple, but beautiful. "Whenever you feel lonely," Lara said softly, "look at this and remember that home isn't just a place." "It's the people who love you." Aria wrapped her arms around her best friend without saying another word. Outside, the moving truck pulled into the driveway. The sound of its engine echoed through the quiet neighborhood. Tomorrow, Aria Bennett would leave behind the only life she'd ever known. She had no idea that, by this time tomorrow, she would come face to face with the boy her mother swore she would love. Nor did she know that one look into his eyes would change both of their lives forever.
