Chapter 17

454 Words
Lana’s POV I didn’t know what to do. I wanted to cry, scream, and just run away. Echo was howling in my head. I could feel her grief of losing her mate. I wanted to curl up in a ball but all I could do was cry for the mate I lost and will never know. I’m not sure how long I had been crying when I heard someone clear their throat. I looked up through the hair that was now stuck to my face from my tears to see the alpha and Luna standing in front of me. Alpha Thomas looked annoyed whereas Luna Diane looked amused. Only she would revel in my pain and agony. “Get up,” Alpha Thomas commanded my gruffly. “You are making a scene when you need to get back to work.” I wasn’t shocked at what he was telling me. I couldn’t hear Echo and I knew she was grieving too much to provide me with any comfort. I knew I would have to get through the rest of the night on my own. As I stood up on wobbly knees, I knew if I didn’t get back to work then my punishment would be severe. I watched through heavy eyelids for the remainder of the night as I served guests. Abigail and Alpha Ryan eventually joined the party again looking like a happy couple. I kept my head down to hide the hurt creeping into my chest each time I saw them from a distance. I tried my best to stick to the edge of the guests. Time felt like it stood still all night. The party died down after a long couple of hours. I was waiting to be dismissed before I could leave. The gamma dismissed the party, and I dreaded the walk home with having only my thoughts with me for the evening. As I started to walk away, I heard the gamma remind everyone that tomorrow the clean up crew would be needed at six. As much as I hated cleaning up and being reminded of the party, I knew I needed the distraction. I felt Echo begin to stir as I was walking home. Lana? Yes Echo. I need to get out and run. I knew what she was asking me. She was wanting to shift for the first time. I was not ready for this physically or mentally. I knew that shifting took a tremendous strain on the body the first couple of times. I have heard that some wolves would pass out immediately after the first shift when back in human form. I trusted Echo but I was not sure if I was ready for this.
