CHAPTER 9

(Thelma's POV) I picked up an orange scarf in my closet and wrapped it around my neck before I walked out of my room and went downstairs to the living room to find my parents, as the day was Sunday and the time was still after 10 am. Walking downstairs into our living room, I heard my father's voice as he was speaking to my mom, and I stepped downstairs into the living room and met their gazes. They stopped discussing as they heard my footsteps, and I stood frozen like a sacrificial lamb waiting to be slaughtered. "Good afternoon, Dad, Mom," I nervously greeted my parents, and I could feel the tense aura in the living room as my dad stared at me, and I heard him respond, "Good morning, Thelma. Aren't you going to church today?" "No, dad," I breathed out in relief, as I had thought that my dad would reprimand me at home because of what I had done the day before yesterday, which was Friday. But Dad was rather smiling at me, and that made me a little curious to know why he had that bright smile on his face instead of my dad glaring at me for bringing shame to his face. And I said, "I have already prayed to God in my room, dad." "That's alright, Thelma, so where are you going too now, as you look all dressed up?" Dad asked me again, and I replied to him with a blush, "I'm not going anywhere, dad. I only came to remind you that I will be resuming with my training tomorrow at M.W Group." Dad kept silent as he heard what I said, and the bright smile on his face instantly disappeared, replaced with a cold glare at me. Just then, Steven walked into the living room to meet us, as he was coming from outside the door, and Steven was wearing a blue top and black, long trousers, with his black, leather palm slippers. For a moment, I thought that Steven was the man that I had slept with the previous day, as Steven somehow looks like him. But blinking my eyes and staring at Steven's face again, I knew that he is my brother and definitely not the annoying man that I had slept with. I don't know if it was my eyes that were paining me or me just beginning to think to that extent, as Steven was black too, like the man that I had slept with, while I'm fair skin like my mom, as my father is a black man too. "You cannot go and do your intern at that company, Thelma," Dad's words finally snapped me out of my trance, and I frowned and swiftly stared away from Steven to Dad, with a sad look on my face. And I asked, "Why, dad? But you know that I want to do my internship practice there before?" "I'm not aware of that, Thelma, and mind you, M.W Group is the same as L.X Group. And it's only a new branch office because of the dispute between Grandpa Charlie and his son and grandson," Father said, as our living room was now dead silent, as Dad was seated on the living room black couch, wearing a long, white garment. I replied, "I don't understand, father. Mom doesn't want me to do my internship at B.H Group, as she feels that Steven wouldn't teach me all that I'm supposed to learn." "How is that true, Melissa? Is it true that you now tell your daughter silly reports that Steven wouldn't teach her well if she joins our company?" Father hastily questioned my mom, but she stared away from him quietly, as she was also seated elegantly on the couch beside him. Dad spoke, "We don't associate with M.W Group or L.X Group, Thelma, and you should be aware of that, and know that they're my enemies, and I don't want to have anything to do with them, and not even you should." "But why, dad? They already approved of me to resume with them tomorrow. And if I don't show up, then when will I get another company to submit my application letter to? As I will now have to wait for long before the company finally approves me with all their processing." "That's enough, Thelma!" Dad's words cut me off, and he said, "You cannot go to M.W Group to do your internship there, and that's final." "Dad! Mom, aren't you going to say anything about this?" I asked my mom, and she was silent about it, and I couldn't understand why Dad and the L.X Group were enemies, aside from the fact that they were business competitors. Steven finally spoke to Dad on my behalf, "Dad.. I don't think it's a bad idea if Thelma goes to work with M.W Group as a new intern there. That way, we will get to know more about their company's growth and how they operate as well, by having an insider working with them." Dad was holding a business magazine newspaper in his hands, and he looked up at Steven with his face contorted in a frown, and he gave what Steven said a thought to know if it was a good idea, but he replied, "Are you sure about that, Steven? As I don't feel safe allowing your sister to go and work closer to our enemies, and more likely someone I don't want to ever associate with in this life and beyond again. I don't care how they operate, and I'm satisfied with how our own company works and operates, and if Thelma cannot go out to search for another company to do her internship training there, aside from M.W Group, then let her forget about the training, as she cannot be anywhere closer to my enemy." "Hmm," Steven was quiet, and I finally screamed out, "No, father! I have already prepared for this, and it's only a six-month training, and after that, I will resign and get to start working with Steven in the company." Father looked at me angrily, and he said, "Look, Thelma, you don't understand what I'm saying, as I don't want to dig into the ugly past that was long buried before, and to tell you why I don't want you anywhere closer to that company. It's not just business-wise alone, or about us getting to learn about how their company operates, as I can get someone else to spy on them if I want that. But I don't want you anywhere closer to that company. So, just do as I say." "No, father!" I cried out and angrily ran back upstairs to my bedroom, as I knew that my father was something else. For goodness sake, I'm a 24-year-old young lady, and I can look after myself. Why is my father being so possessive of me and not wanting me to explore or to live a free life, as he's always talking about his enemies and as well hiding me away from the enemies, as he only flaunts Steven around as his son? No one knows that I'm the real biological child of my father, while Steven was brought out from God knows where. "Thelma, wait..." Steven called back to me, but I was too sad to stop or to listen to them, as my heart sank in my chest, and I was already heartbroken and wanting to be left alone to think about my life and another possibly company that I could work with. So I ignored responding to Steven as I stubbornly went back upstairs to my room and locked my room shut with the key, so no one would come into my bedroom to disturb me, not even my mom or Elsa or the rest of the maids, as I was so heartbroken, and my joy was shattered by my father's refusal for me to work at M.W Group. I had to take Father's permission before I can leave the house, as my mother doesn't have much say at home, and she only does what my father wanted her to do, and the guards won't let me out except with Dad's permission. I shook my head as I walked to my bed and sat on it, crying my eyes out before I would later take up my laptop again to search for another company that I would probably submit my internship letter to. I hated everything around me, and I sometimes wished that I wasn't a billionaire's daughter, if that was how other top-notch billionaire's children in City B were being restrained. It wasn't the same for Ella and Sandra, as their parents were rich and influential and of a higher family class, but Ella and Sandra were free to go out to wherever place they wanted to hang out, without the guards following them about or their parents refraining them from traveling, while I had my parents to deal with, as they were all very possessive of me, and I couldn't leave the house without a guard escort. I knew that even though my dad allowed me to resume and work as an intern in another company, he would still state the condition that I had to resume working there with a bodyguard, so I cried as I laid on my bed in my room.
