Chapter1

1250 Words
Lexi balanced a tray of drinks and plates, navigating the crowded restaurant floor. As she served a table of four, her phone buzzed in her apron pocket. She pulled it out, her eyes scanning the screen. Her heart skipped a beat as she saw the message from an unknown number. "Pay up or else" Her mind raced as she wondered who could be sending such ominous messages. It was the fifth one this week, all from unknown numbers. She had tried to brush it off as spam or a prank, but the words sent a shiver down her spine. As her shift ended, Lexi clocked out and gathered her belongings. The evening air was crisp as she walked home, her senses heightened. She glanced over her shoulder, feeling like someone was watching her. The streetlights cast long shadows, making her imagination run wild. She quickened her pace, her heart racing. Just as she turned the corner onto her street, a hand clamped down on her mouth and nose. A pungent smell filled her nostrils, and she struggled to break free. But the grip was too strong. Panic set in as she kicked and flailed, her vision blurring. The last thing she remembered was the sound of her own muffled screams. Everything went black. … Lexi's eyes fluttered open, and she was met with an unfamiliar ceiling. She was seated in a chair, her wrists and ankles bound by thick ropes. The room was small and grey, with a tiny window high up in the corner, barely large enough to let in a sliver of light. Panic set in as she struggled against the restraints, but they were too tight. She scanned the room frantically, searching for a way out or something to aid her escape. But there was nothing - no ladder, no furniture to climb on, not even a hint of a possible exit. The chair she was tied to was sturdy and unmovable. Just as despair began to creep in, the door creaked open, and a rugged-looking man entered, flanked by two burly men. His face was chiseled, with a sinister grin spreading across his features as he approached her. "What do you want from me?" Lexi asked, her voice trembling with fear. The man chuckled, his eyes glinting with malice. "You're pretty much aware of what I want from you. Do you remember receiving these messages?" He held up his phone, displaying a string of messages on the screen. Lexi's eyes widened in horror as she recognized the messages - the same ones she had been receiving from an unknown number. "It was you! Why did you send those to me? What are you asking me to pay for?" she demanded, her voice shaking with anger and fear. The man's grin grew wider, his eyes glinting with a menacing light. "Because your father owes me" "My father?" Lexi scoffed. "You must be crazy. My father is dead." The man cackled. "I know your father is dead, but he was indebted to me before his death. And now, that debt falls to you." Lexi's eyes narrowed. "What proof do you have?" she asked The man pulled out a small tablet from his pocket and pressed a few buttons. A video began to play, showing Lexi's father sitting in a dimly lit room, looking worried and desperate. "Dad?" Lexi whispered, her eyes fixed on the screen. In the video, her father spoke directly to the camera, his voice laced with urgency. "Please, I need the money. I'll pay you back, I swear. I just need it for a little while longer." The man paused the video and turned to Lexi, a smug expression on his face. "You see, your father came to me for a loan. A substantial one. And he promised to pay me back, with interest." Lexi's eyes welled up with tears as she watched her father's desperate plea. She felt a wave of anger and betrayal wash over her. How could her father have kept this a secret from her? The man continued, "He never paid me back, Lexi. And now, the debt falls to you. You're going to have to pay me what your father owed me, plus interest. And if you don't... well, let's just say I have ways of collecting what's owed to me." Lexi's mind raced as she tried to process what she was seeing and hearing. She felt trapped and helpless, with no clear way out "How much do I need to pay?" Lexi asked, her voice shaking slightly. The man smiled, a cold, calculating smile. "Ah, it's a large amount. Your father owes me 2 million dollars." Lexi's eyes widened. What did her father use such an incredulous amount of money for? "And you have 48 hours to come up with the money. If you don't... well, let's just say you don't want to find out what happens if you don't." He nodded to one of his goons, who stepped forward and untied Lexi's wrists and ankles. "You're free to go, for now. But don't think about trying to run or hide. I'll find you, and I'll make sure you regret it." Lexi rubbed her sore wrists, her mind racing with thoughts of how she was going to come up with that kind of money in such a short amount of time. She knew she had to think fast, or her life would be in serious danger. The man handed her a small piece of paper with a phone number on it. "Call me when you have the money. And don't try to contact the police or anyone else. I have eyes and ears everywhere. You're not as safe as you think you are." With that, he turned and walked out of the room, leaving Lexi shaken and scared. She quickly left, her heart racing with fear and adrenaline. She didn't dare look back, fearing what she might see. She stumbled through the dark streets, her eyes scanning for any sign of life or hope. After what felt like an eternity, she saw a glimmer of light in the distance - a streetlamp casting a warm glow over the sidewalk. She quickened her pace, her legs aching from the ordeal. As she reached the lamp, she saw a taxi cab driving by, its headlights illuminating the dark street. Without hesitation, she hailed the cab and jumped in, giving the driver her address in a shaky voice. The driver, a kind-eyed old man, looked at her with concern. "Hey, are you okay, miss? You look like you've seen a ghost." Lexi tried to compose herself, taking deep breaths to calm down. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little shaken up. Please, just take me home." The driver nodded and stepped on the gas, speeding through the streets to get Lexi home as quickly as possible. Lexi closed her eyes, her mind racing with thoughts of the man and his goons, wondering if she was truly safe. After what felt like an eternity, the cab pulled up to her apartment building. Lexi paid the driver and stumbled out, her legs trembling beneath her. She fumbled for her keys, finally managing to unlock the door and stumble inside. She locked the door behind her, leaning against it as if to barricade herself from the dangers outside. Only then did she allow herself to break down, tears streaming down her face as she collapsed onto the couch, her body and mind exhausted from the ordeal.
