Two days had passed, and Lexi was still nowhere near gathering the money. She had tried everything, from selling her belongings to borrowing from neighbours, but it wasn't enough. As she walked down the street, lost in thought, she suddenly spotted one of the goons from the warehouse. Without thinking, she started running, her heart racing with fear.
They all came out of the corners, chasing after her. She dodged and weaved through the crowds, but they were closing in. Just as she thought all was lost, she bumped into someone and fell to the ground. She looked up to see a handsome man in a suit standing next to a fancy car. She grabbed his legs, pleading desperately.
"Please, help me. Don't let them catch me."
The man stared at her with a stoic expression. "Who are you? And what makes you think I'll help you?"
"I know I don't have any right to, but please help me. If they catch me, they're going to kill me."
"Who is after you?" he asked, his voice firm but curious.
"Some goons, they're asking me for some money I have no idea about." she replied, tears streaming down her face.
Just then, the goons stopped in front of them. "You have to release her. We have unfinished business with her." one of them growled.
"And what business is that?" the man asked, his eyes narrowing.
"I don't think that's any of your business. The girl is all we need." the goon replied.
"Well, it is my business. After all, she's my wife," the man said with a smirk playing on his lips.
The goons stared at each other in shock, and Lexi's jaw dropped in disbelief.
"Are you trying to mess with us now? We've already looked into her, and she's single," one of them sneered.
The man chuckled. "Then you have the wrong information, because she's married. To me."
"Fine then. If she's your wife, you should be aware that she owes our boss." one of the goons sneered.
"No, I don't!" Lexi snapped, but was quickly silenced by another goon. "Quiet!"
The man's expression turned cold. "Don't speak to my wife that way. How much does she owe you?"
The goon snorted. "Why are you asking? Are you going to pay it?"
The man's eyes narrowed. "Don't waste my time. How much is it?"
"Two million dollars." the goon replied, a smirk on his face.
The man turned to his PA, who was standing behind him.
"Get their account number and transfer the money to them."
Lexi's eyes almost bulged out in shock. Was this man trying to show off? How could he give out two million dollars just like that?
The PA nodded and handed the phone to the goons, who reluctantly typed in the account number. The PA typed something on his phone and looked up at them. "I've sent it. You can check."
The goons scoffed. "Our boss would have to confirm that."
Just then, one of their phones rang, and he picked up. He spoke for a while and ended the call with a look of surprise on his face.
"What's wrong?" the others asked.
"Boss just called. He received an alert of two million dollars." the goon replied, stunned.
They all gasped in shock, and Lexi stared at the man, wondering who he could be. For someone to give out two million dollars so easily, he was clearly not an ordinary person.
"Now that you've gotten what you want, you should leave." the man said, his voice firm.
The goons grumbled and left angrily, clearly not happy with the sudden turn of events.
After they had left, Lexi burst into another round of tears.
"Thank you so much for this. I don't know what they would have done to me if you didn't help me. I don't know how I can repay you."
"There is one way you can repay me," the man said, his eyes gleaming with a hint of mischief. "Get married to me."
Lexi's eyes widened in shock.
"What!? You can't be serious!"
"You heard me." He replied, his expression unyielding.
"What are you saying? How do you expect me to get married to you? A total stranger." She exclaimed
"But you asked me to help you, also a total stranger. And I don't do things for free." He pointed out.
"I can't do that. There has to be something else I can do." she pleaded.
"Fine. Refund the money I spent now." He said, his eyes glinting with amusement.
"Are you kidding me? If I had the money, would I be running from those men?" She asked, exasperated. This man was just too ridiculous.
"I've given you enough options, so make your choice and be fast about it." he said, his patience wearing thin.
"I can't get married to you. I don't want to be stuck with you for the rest of my life." she said
"Neither do I. So I'm proposing a contract marriage. You have to act as my wife for a year, and you're free to go. You'll also be compensated with three million dollars." he said
It was really a mouthwatering offer, and she didn't have the money to pay him back. She took a deep breath and said, "I agree."
"You agree?" he repeated, a small smile playing on his lips. "Good. Let's get the paperwork started then."
He nodded to his PA, who stepped forward with a briefcase.
"We have a lawyer on standby to draw up the contract. We'll get the marriage license and have the ceremony done today."
"Today?" Lexi's eyes widened in shock. "But...but I need time to think about this!"
"No time for that," he said, his voice firm. "We need to move quickly. My lawyer will explain the terms of the contract, and we'll get everything settled today."
He turned to his PA. "We'll be heading to the lawyer's office. Get everything ready for the ceremony."
The PA nodded and gestured to Lexi. "Shall we, Miss…?The lawyer's office is just a few blocks away."
Lexi hesitated, feeling like she was being swept up in a whirlwind. But she had agreed to this, and she couldn't back out now.
