CHAPTER 10 (BOMB)
I was working non-stop for eight hours already. Even the whole café is fully air-conditioned, my sweats started to form on my forehead – just on the edges of my hair. A lot of customers swarmed inside the café as we released a new flavor and bundles of coffee, cake, tea or chips. We added sweets too like leche flan, yam jellies and cassava cake. Over two years, I’ve been here in this café. This was the reason I survived. Though I still have the money that was a birthday gift to me on my 18th birthday, I still needed the money here for my basic needs and it helped me to have savings. I am still at that small rooftop room of Grey’s grandma and she was happy since I was there that her plants grow well and she’s worry-free when she’s out of town. I know that the Sheil family are wealthy but then again, I can say that the Carlins are far more wealthier than them but still, they belong to the higher society nonetheless.
Oh by the way, a lot of things happened since my 19th birthday at the resort. After four months from that day, Jimmy already proposed to Mariah and they got married – a civil wedding – just a few weeks after because they can wait no longer. It was really funny when they were already inside the municipal hall when they both said that their vows are only for theirselves so they need not to say it in public and so the judge never forced them to. They are still working and making a lot of money so that they can be wedded on the church next year. That was according to both of their family’s plans and traditions.
Jinny on the other hand, stopped from being a barista in the café. And if you ask why, that is because she landed on a far more productive job. Jinny is the type of a woman who has curves in the right places, a beautiful face and a slim body. One time, while we were at the mall, there was a flyer about this training agency that pays even if you are still a trainee and they are conducting their search on that mall. Jinny tried to convince me that I must be there but I declined. I am not used to so much crowd. When the director – or whatever he is spotted Jinny, their search for a new model was over. That day, Jinny had her first photoshoot for a new local branded apparel and she was paid handsomely. And now, almost a year and five months passed, she’s still a trainee though, but she modeled a lot of local and some international brands. She sometimes comes here in the café in full disguise when we are about to close so we can have a bonding time. Being a modeI, she’s known to the public and then issues will fly over like some gas bomb in seconds. She has this screen name, Angeline. I guess she is happy and contented with her life now – that’s just my observation though.
And as for me, nothing much changed. I am now on my fourth year college – yep, now graduating finally. Still a regular student. If you ask me if I ace my subject exams and such, then I can say I am quite good at maintaining that. I need to or else I will say goodbye to my most precious full scholarship on the university. My love life on the other hand is quite great. Never did we fight for too long. Grey is a type of man who understands more and I think that’s convinient for both of us since we are so busy studying. And I have a part-time job that I think I need to say goodbye too after a year if I land a much better job after I graduate.
I placed a cup of tea, a cup of coffee and a glass of juice on a serving tray. Together with table napkins and three slices of royal cake – one of the new flavors they made. I readied a smile as I served the orders to a family who was sitting next to the window. I thanked them before I went on my way to the locker area. I felt the need to freshen up a bit and pee. After I got out from the toilet, I saw Mariah. By the way, there are now five servers so we can do this one or two at a time.
“Hey girl, freshening up? I thought you hate makeups.”
“It’s not makeup Mariah. It’s just powder and lipgloss. Anyway, when is your wedding again?”
“Six months from now. We adjusted the date since we are short of budget. It is really tough to earn a lot of bucks right now.”
“It’s okay not to have a grand wedding in my own opinion. What matters is that, the bride and groom loves each other.”
“Very much correct. Anyway, you’ll be graduating in four months and two weeks time, are you still not busy right now? I mean, thesis writing and a lot more things you need to do. I guess it’s okay to take a leave from work here in the café.”
“My thesis is about businesses and how it works and on how to develop a new strategy to make businesses more successful. I am thinking of making a new product or business and patent it – if I can. And then that will be my thesis. Right now, I am thankful that I am here at the café since I can see the movement of the business and on how it works and I can see the loopholes too. I need to leave the café next two months to ready for my defense.”
“That’s good. Best of luck Miracle. Oh! Your birthday is coming.” Yeah, my birthday that they can’t forget since they want to hangout on the beach again with the whole friendship squad as they call it. Blame Mariah for naming it as such. She said we are a squad already – Me, Mariah, Jinny and Jimmy.
“And our anniversary,” I added. Of course, our anniversary is during my birthday. She walked towards me and sat on the vacant seat next to mine.
“What’s the plan?”
“I will surprise him since it is Saturday and then gather everyone at eve in a seaside restaurant? Of course, I’ll do the surprise in solo and you guys will be the ones who will prepare the place.”
“That’s cool! I am not sure if Jinny will be there. She’s super busy.”
“It’s okay. She never fails to call us anyway. And she promised to go there too at late night since we will be staying overnight.” Mariah nodded and we both went back to our work.
***
I’m here at the mall. It’s Friday already. I’m looking for something that I will give to Grey as a gift. I am thinking why hasn’t he called me tho. I think he is just busy preparing something too. I have been walking for an hour already but I never spotted something good to buy. I see clothes but Grey has lots of that. I can’t afford costumized things right now too so that’s a no. I don’t see him being so materialistic. We’ve been together since I was 19 and now, I’m turning 21 tomorrow so I am quite sure of what he likes and dislikes. Wait… he likes cakes.
I smiled at the idea that I can just give him a cake. I went out of the mall and went straight to a cake shop nearby. I guess, I will have a costumized cake. Grey loves blue and he loves skateboards so I guess a blue skateboard cake will make the day perfect.
“Hello Ma’am. Welcome to Yokkii! Are you here for a cake or cookies?” asked the lady inside.
“I’ll have a costumized cake. I’ll pick it up tomorrow around eight in the morning.”
“What design do you have in mjnd?”
“A blue skateboard cake. And please write this down at the top of the cake.” I picked a paper and pen at the top of the table and scribbled the words ‘Happy Anniversary; from Miracle’.
“Will this be all?”
“Yes. I’ll just pick it up tomorrow.”
The lady smiled and said yes. I walked towards the roof top room that I am still renting. I need to look for dress. I excitedly opened the cabinet on the corner and my smile suddenly faded. Why did I forgot that I don’t wear dress? Never did I bought for one either. All I have is t-shirt, jeans, shorts and most importantly my wardrobe does not contain an piece of skirt either. I bit my lower lip and looked up in disappointment. I’m being dumb again, am I?
I just picked a low rise jeans, a beige colored shirt and a black spaghetti strapped top. I saw this style a lot in Korean dramas which by the way is because of Jinny who’s addicted to that. She even keeps on saying this terms like aja, oppa, and a lot more terms that I know. I picked up a black and white colored sandals. I hurriedly did all my routines and in no time, I drifted to sleep.
