Chapter 1: The First Day
Jay Jackson stood by the window of his room as the early morning sun shone across the quiet neighborhood. Today was a big day.
It was his first day at Bridgewater High School.
“Jay! Breakfast is ready!” his mother called from downstairs.
Jay grabbed his backpack and rushed down the stairs. His little brother Bill was already sitting at the table, eating pancakes faster than anyone Jay had ever seen.
“Slow down,” Jay laughed.
Bill grinned. “I need energy. Maybe I’ll visit your big school today!”
“Please don’t,” Jay said jokingly.
Their father looked up from his coffee and smiled.
“First day of high school, Jay. Remember—be confident.”
Jay nodded.
A few minutes later, he walked through the large gates of Bridgewater High School. The campus was bigger than he expected. Students were everywhere—talking, laughing, and rushing to class.
As Jay looked around, someone suddenly bumped into him.
“Sorry!” said a tall boy holding a basketball.
“No problem,” Jay replied.
“I’m Marcus Reed,” the boy said. “You new here?”
“Yeah. Jay Jackson.”
Marcus smiled. “Good. I needed a new friend.”
At that moment, two girls walked past them.
One of them had long brown hair and was carrying a geography textbook.
Marcus leaned closer and whispered, “That’s Mia Smith. Her dad is the geography teacher.”
Jay didn’t know why, but he suddenly felt nervous.
Mia looked up for a moment and their eyes met briefly.
Then she smiled.
Jay had a strange feeling that Bridgewater High School was about to change his life forever.
