The next morning, Doris arrived at Davies Innovations with a mixture of determination and exhaustion. Her mind replayed the intense day she’d just had—Emma Davies’s piercing gaze, the endless spreadsheets, the crisp professionalism that filled every corner of the office. She’d barely slept, nerves still buzzing from the responsibility now resting on her shoulders.
Grabbing a coffee from the sleek café in the lobby, Doris tried to steady her thoughts. Today would be no less demanding, especially with the product launch deadline inching closer. But despite the pressure, she felt a strange pull—curiosity about the man who was both her boss and, perhaps, something more.
She made her way to the executive floor, nodding to familiar faces she had barely spoken to. The elevator ride up felt slower this time, and when the doors opened, Doris found herself hesitating just outside Emma’s office.
A low murmur of voices drifted out. She could hear Emma’s voice—calm, measured—and another voice, softer and unfamiliar.
Curiosity won. She stepped inside quietly, pausing in the doorway.
Emma was standing near the window, his arms crossed, staring out over the city. Beside him was a younger woman, her head bowed as she spoke softly. From the corner of her eye, Doris noticed a small box in Emma’s hand.
The tension in the room was different—more fragile, less businesslike.
Emma turned suddenly and caught sight of Doris. “Oh. You’re here early.”
Doris blinked, unsure if she should leave or stay. “I… I didn’t mean to interrupt.”
Emma’s eyes flicked back to the woman beside him. “It’s alright. Doris, this is Mia. She’s our new intern.”
Mia smiled shyly. “Nice to meet you.”
Doris offered a polite smile but couldn’t shake the unexpected pang of jealousy. Emma’s attention, even for a moment, was elsewhere—and the warmth in the room was unfamiliar.
Emma’s voice softened as he addressed Mia. “I wanted to give you this. It’s a small welcome gift.” He handed over the box.
Mia’s face lit up, and Doris caught a glimpse of a side of Emma she hadn’t seen before—a kindness reserved for a select few.
As Mia left, Emma turned to Doris, his expression unreadable again. “Ready to continue where we left off?”
Doris nodded, though a strange feeling lingered in her chest.
The day blurred into meetings and project updates. But every so often, Doris found herself watching Emma more closely—the way his brow furrowed when he was deep in thought, the quick smile he flashed at an inside joke with a colleague, the subtle way he adjusted his cufflinks when stressed.
During a late afternoon strategy session, Emma paused and looked directly at her. “Doris, you’ve been impressive. You have sharp instincts.”
Doris’s cheeks flushed. “Thank you, Mr. Davies. That means a lot.”
He inclined his head slightly, a rare gesture of approval. “Keep it up.”
Later, as the office emptied and night settled over the city, Emma surprised Doris by inviting her to join him in the company lounge. It was a rare chance to see the office outside the strict structure of meetings and deadlines.
They sat side by side, sipping coffee in comfortable silence.
For a moment, Emma’s usual armor seemed to crack.
“I don’t often do this,” he admitted quietly. “Invite someone to stay late just to talk.”
Doris glanced at him, heart skipping. “Why me?”
He shrugged, a flicker of vulnerability crossing his features. “You’re not afraid to speak up. You challenge me. And… you listen.”
Doris smiled softly. “I want to learn. And I want to do this right.”
Emma’s eyes met hers, steady and intense. “Good. Because this company means everything to me. But there’s more to it than business. More than what people see.”
She leaned in slightly. “What do you mean?”
Emma’s voice dropped to a near whisper. “That’s a story for another night.”
The clock ticked away, but neither of them moved. Outside, the city lights flickered like stars, and Doris felt, for the first time, that maybe beneath the CEO’s cold exterior was something worth discovering.
