Chapter One: First Day, First Impressions
Doris Ories smoothed her blouse nervously as she stepped into the towering glass building of Davies Innovations. The lobby was pristine, the walls gleaming white and glass, with soft classical music barely audible in the background. The scent of fresh coffee mingled with a faint hint of polished wood. It was everything she had imagined a top-tier corporate office would be — intimidating and exciting all at once.
She glanced down at the company ID badge pinned neatly to her chest, then up again at the sleek elevators. Today was her first day working directly under Emma Davies, the CEO known across the city for his sharp intellect and icy demeanor. Stories of his unyielding leadership had followed her since she first applied, but Doris refused to be intimidated. She was ready.
The receptionist greeted her with a polite smile. “Ms. Ories? Mr. Davies is expecting you on the executive floor. Take the elevator to the 23rd.”
As the elevator hummed upward, Doris steadied her breathing. Her thoughts raced between anticipation and doubt. Would she be able to meet his expectations? Would she fit in the cutthroat environment she’d heard so much about?
When the elevator doors opened, the hallway was quiet, lined with glass offices where teams worked in concentrated silence. Doris followed the signs, her footsteps echoing on the marble floor until she reached the CEO’s office—a large glass room at the end of the hall.
She knocked gently. A deep voice called, “Come in.”
Emma Davies looked up from his sleek laptop, his dark eyes sharp and assessing. His expression was unreadable, almost stern, but there was an undeniable charisma about him. He was tall, with neatly styled hair and a tailored suit that made him look every inch the powerful man his reputation promised.
“Ms. Ories,” he said, standing to greet her. His voice was calm but carried authority. “Welcome to Davies Innovations.”
“Thank you, Mr. Davies,” Doris replied, trying to keep her voice steady despite the flutter in her chest.
Emma gestured toward the chair across from his desk. “Have a seat. I assume you’re aware of the challenges ahead?”
Doris nodded. “Yes, sir. I’m prepared to work hard and learn.”
He studied her for a moment, then nodded briskly. “Good. We have a critical product launch coming up, and I’ll need your full attention. You’ll be assisting me directly on this project.”
The weight of those words sank in. Working closely with the CEO was a chance most people only dreamed of—and with it came high expectations.
Emma flipped open a thick binder filled with charts and notes. “Let’s get started.”
For the next few hours, Doris was immersed in data, timelines, and strategic plans. Emma was exacting, pushing her to think quickly and speak confidently. At times, his questions caught her off guard, but she met each one with determination. Despite his serious demeanor, Doris noticed subtle signs of approval—an encouraging nod, a rare smile when she solved a tricky problem.
When the clock neared six, Emma leaned back and finally broke the silence. “You handled that well for a first day.”
Doris felt a warm rush of pride. “Thank you, Mr. Davies. That means a lot coming from you.”
For a moment, his gaze softened—just a flicker, but enough to stir curiosity in her. It was a side he rarely showed, hidden beneath the layers of business formality.
His phone buzzed sharply on the desk. He checked it, then stood. “We’ll pick this up tomorrow. For now, get some rest. You’ll need your energy.”
As Doris gathered her things and stepped out, the hallway felt different somehow—not quite as cold as before.
Outside, the city skyline glittered under the evening sky. Doris took a deep breath, heart pounding not just from nerves but from something unexpected—a quiet hope.
Maybe, just maybe, beneath the CEO’s hard exterior was a secret soft spot waiting for her to find.
