Chapter 2 An Offer

1226 Words
When he arrived in New York, Robert only had a few dollars left in his pocket. He decided to use it to buy breakfast, and ponder his lack of funds. Robert remembered what Jason did teach him, his tricks of fooling others.     Robert stood on the sidewalk and shouted, “Ancestral exorcism, fortune-telling, removing evil spirits and monsters!”   However, he didn’t get any business and was feeling extremely discouraged. He hadn’t made a cent and it was almost lunch. He remembered he had the Remarkable Ghostbuster System, in his mind he commanded, “System, give me tens of thousands of dollars to solve my financial problems!”   He was joking because he knew that the invisible system could not make money out of nothing. So, he was shocked when he heard the system say, “The host’s points are insufficient and cannot be exchanged for the property.”   Robert was suddenly confused, "How many points can I exchange for property? How many points do I have?"   A screen that only he could see appeared in front of him.   Host: Robert Martin System level: 1 (0/100) Available points: 0 Acquired Exorcism (rune circle): None Items in possession: None   Immediately, the system sounded again, "The exchange ratio between points and real property is 1:10000"   Robert's eyes widened. If he had a hundred points, he could be a millionaire, he quickly asked, “How do I get points?”   "Hunt for ghosts!" the system replied, "Only by handing over the captured ghost to the system, will the system convert it into points. The points the host will get depend on the ghost’s attributes."   Robert was thrilled that he actually found a way to get rich quick.   "But how do can I hunt for ghosts?" Robert asked cautiously.   "The system level is too low to start the ghost hunting capabilities for the time being."   He could not believe his luck, he thought he would be rich by the end of the day. He wanted to scream but was distracted by someone standing in front of him.     As he looked up Robert could help but exclaim, “Damn, she is hot!”   The beautiful woman was wearing a pair of gold-framed glasses and a black tight-fitting skirt and her two large breasts were popping out of her sweater. Her legs were so long and slender that Robert was having a hard time not drooling, she was much more beautiful than the village belles in the countryside.   The woman coughed awkwardly, and asked coldly, "I heard you yelling just now. Can you really hunt ghosts?"   "Of course! You can hit me if I can’t!" Robert vowed as he regained his composure. Even if he couldn’t catch the ghost on his own, he had the Ghostbuster System to help him.   The woman said with slight doubt, “My name is Abby Bush, and I am the headteacher of a third-grade class at New York Portledge School.”   Robert wondered if all teachers were as pretty as her. He was very excited and introduced himself, “Nice to meet you, my name is Robert Martin.”   Abby looked emotionless and asked straightforwardly, "Mr. Martin, can you give me a price? How much is it?"   "What?!" Robert was stunned. "I mean, how much does it cost to hunt for a ghost..."   A red glow appeared on Abby’s face.   "Well, it depends on what kind of ghost it is. For little ghosts and little monsters, the charge would be a few hundred dollars. For more fierce ghosts, it would be more,” Robert guessed. He had never hunted a ghost before, especially in a big city like New York. He had been to many small towns and villages with his master but he only recited mantras.     Looking Robert up and down, Abby saw that he was wearing a rustic gray robe, had large holes in his pants, and his hair looked like a bird’s nest. She could see that he was handsome under his unkempt appearance; he had a strong jawline and defined features. If he changed his clothes and hairstyle, he would definitely attract a crowd. She wondered why such a handsome man would be an exorcist, it was such a waste.         Abby sighed and said, "Recently, the girls' dormitory at our school seems to be haunted. Some people often say that they heard ghosts screaming, which makes the students panic. I wonder if you are interested?"   "Of course!" Robert said without hesitation; he would be crazy to turn down money. His Ghostbuster System wouldn’t be very helpful but hunting ghosts was not a big deal. It was just some symbolic practice that involved waving a cross, and burning sticks of incense.   "But I will only pay you after you catch the ghost," Abby added.   “Damn it!” Robert mumbled under his breath, he couldn’t understand how anyone survived being a crooked exorcist.   Seeing that he wasn’t replying, Abby turned and started to walk away, “Since you are not interested, forget it. There are other exorcists anyway.”   "Hey!" Robert ran to catch her. It was his first business opportunity and if he didn’t get the money, he would be homeless and begging for food.   Abby barely smiled, but raised her eyebrows, "What? You’ve changed your mind? Will you take my business or not?"   "Yes! I will take it!" Robert regretted what he was saying but couldn’t stop himself. He had no idea how to actually catch a ghost and really didn’t want to embarrass himself. Yet, he knew he was desperate for money, so he had to agree.   Suddenly, a chime went off in his head, “The host accepted a random task! Congratulations to the host on having a beginner gift. Does the host want to open it?”   Robert was speechless when he was the virtual task window appear in front of him.   Task level: 1 Task sponsor: Abby Bush Objective: Catch the ghosts in the girl’s dormitory at Portledge School in New York Task reward: 10 points, 50 experience points, a ghost servant PS: Random tasks will be changed with things happening around the host and can be regarded as auxiliary tasks   Robert quickly did the calculations; ten points was equal to $100,000. There was a burst of ecstasy in his heart, and if that was just a random auxiliary task, he would be able to make a lot more with main tasks. He knew the experience points were used to upgrade the Ghostbuster System, but he didn’t know what a ghost servant was.   The most embarrassing part was that system had not activated his ghost hunting ability. He was about to scold it for cheating, but then he remembered that he hadn’t opened his gift.   "Open the gift!" He ordered with thoughts.   "Congratulations to the host on successfully opening the gift!"   "Congratulations to the host on receiving the ability of ghost eyes!”   "Congratulations to the host on receiving 50 experience points!"   "Congratulations to the host on receiving the instrument kit and ghost hunting kit!"   "Congratulations to the host on receiving one thousand Fiery Rune!"   "Congratulations to the host on activating the ghost hunting ability!"   The series of system notifications flashing in front of Robert’s eyes made his head hurt. He was thankful for the generous gift and thrilled over the permanent ghost eyes and hunting kits.   It would be simple for him to get rich now that he had the confidence to catch ghosts.   "What are you doing? Pack up your things and come with me!" Abby turned around and began to walk away from Robert again.   Robert snapped back to reality then quickly grabbed his bag and walked toward the school with Abby.
