Chapter 20: A Difficult Conversation
Ava knew that breaking up with Julian wouldn't be easy. They had been together for a long time, and she knew that he would be hurt by her decision.
But she also knew that it was necessary. She couldn't keep pretending to be happy in a relationship that was no longer working for her.
Ava took a deep breath and picked up her phone. She had to do this in person, but she needed to talk to Julian first and arrange a time to meet.
"Hey, Julian," Ava said, trying to sound casual. "Can we meet up to talk about something?"
There was a pause on the other end of the line. "What's going on, Ava?" Julian asked, his voice sounding suspicious.
Ava hesitated. She didn't want to have this conversation over the phone, but she knew that she had to give Julian some idea of what was going on.
"I just need to talk to you about us," Ava said. "Can we meet up at the park at 2pm?"
Julian sighed. "Fine," he said. "I'll be there."
Ava hung up the phone and took a deep breath. She knew that this conversation was going to be difficult, but she was ready to face it head-on.
As she arrived at the park, Ava saw Julian sitting on a bench, looking stern and serious. She took a deep breath and walked over to him.
"Hey," Julian said, as Ava sat down next to him.
Ava took another deep breath. "Julian, I think we need to talk about our relationship," she said.
Julian looked at her, his eyes narrowing. "What's going on, Ava?" he asked.
Ava took a deep breath. "I think we've grown apart, Julian. And I don't think we're right for each other anymore."
Julian's face fell, and Ava could see the hurt and shock in his eyes. "What are you talking about, Ava?" he asked. "We're engaged. We're supposed to be getting married."
Ava shook her head. "I know, Julian. And I'm sorry. But I think we've been pretending to be happy for too long. And I don't want to spend the rest of my life with someone I'm not truly in love with."
Julian looked at her, his eyes filled with tears. "You're just going to give up on us like that?" he asked.
Ava took another deep breath. "I'm not giving up on us, Julian. I'm just being honest with myself and with you. And I think it's time for us to move on."
Julian nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving Ava's face. "I understand," he said. "But can I ask you one thing?"
Ava nodded. "Of course," she said.
"Is there someone else?" Julian asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Ava hesitated, unsure of how to answer. But then she looked into Julian's eyes and saw the hurt and vulnerability there.
"Yes," Ava said, her voice soft. "There is someone else."
Julian nodded slowly, his eyes filling with tears. "I thought so," he said.
