Long before Selene stone understood pain, the world had already learned to fear it. History books spoke of a time when humans and werewolves drenched the earth in blood, claw and steel. But in the year two thousand and thirty eight (2038), after decades of s*******r, a peace treaty was signed. The supernatural world stepped out of the shadows and for the first time, humans and werewolves lived side by side in unending harmony. Yet one rule remained unbroken. Werewolves must never marry humans. Not because of hatred but because the full moon nights turned love into danger. Those who went against the rule for the sake of love risked tearing their families apart. Some wounds however, were not carved by claws but by ignorance. And Selene stone learned this truth at just twelve years old. The stone mansion stood tall and cold, an architectural master piece wrapped in marble, fantasizing chandeliers and quiet cruelty. To the world, it was perfection, to Selene it was a cage where she and her mother were ghosts, unwanted, unseen and unloved. "Selene !!" Her stepmother's silky voice floated down the staircase like poison wrapped in perfume. Lady Helena, elegant, flawless, and heartless. "Don't drag your feet on the tiles, it's terribly uncultured. Honestly must you act like that." Selene paused halfway down the stairs, clutching the railing with small fingers. Her voice remained soft. "I-I wasn't dragging my feet lady Helena ." Helena smiled, not kindly but like a cat toying with a corner mouse. "oh, so now you're calling me a liar ?" Selene swallowed "No ma'am." "Good." Helena's smile vanished instantly. "Remember your place, this house is not your playground." Then she turned, her heels clicking against marble as she walked away. Selene's mother entered from the hallway, gently holding her daughter's shoulders. "Just ignore her sweetheart." Selene looked up, eyes searching her mother's tired smile. "Why does she and dad hate us?" Her mother hesitated- but silence became her answer because even the truth was sharp, this family had never wanted them. Dinner that evening was a symbol of silverware, polished manners, and cold hearts. Selene and her mother sat at the long table, far from the head seat where Lord Adrian stone, the man Selene was forced to call 'father'. Read the newspaper as if his family were invisible. Selene glanced at him. "Father... today at school, I - I " "Don't interrupt me" Adrian said, eyes never lifting. His tone held no anger, no affection. Just emptiness. Helena smirked behind her wine glass. Selene lowered her gaze to her untouched plate, her mother gently squeezed her hand under the table, whispering "Eat dear" But Selene's appetite was already gone. Minutes later, Helena dabbed her lips with a napkin and spoke. Voice honey-sweet, words razor-sharp. "Adrian ! I truly think it's time. They don't belong here. It's ... uncomfortable having them under the same roof." Her mother stiffened. "Helena, please we haven't done anything to you." Helena scoffed lightly "Existing is quite enough." Selene's heart fell with heaviness of force. "Father... you're not agreeing, are you?" Adrian finally looked up- his eyes flat, distant and ice cold. "You and your mother will leave tomorrow." Selene froze, her mother gasped. "we're your family !! Adrian " Her mother whispered, voice breaking. "You can't just-..." "I already have another family, Adrian replied; one that matters, for your own sake, leave with whatever dignity you have left ." Selene didn't cry. Not yet. She simply stared at the man who shared her blood but not her heart, and realized he had never once looked at her with love. By morning, the mansion gates closed behind them. wealth gone, home gone, name meaningless. They found shelter in a small countryside town, far from polished marble and cruel smiles. Their new house was tiny, tucked near whispering pine trees, where stars shone brighter than chandelier ever could. Life became hard but for the first time it was peaceful. Selene helped her mother sell homemade crafts. They laughed in their cramped little kitchen, shared warm blankets on cold nights and watch fireflies in the summer grass. It wasn't luxury, but it was theirs. Until her mother became ill. The illness was swift and merciless. Two poor for proper treatment, nobody to beg from, her mother grew weaker each day. One rainy night, Selene sat beside her, holding her frail hand. "Selene" her mother whispered, voice trembling. Listen to me, you're not weak. You're not what they tried to make you. One day, you will rise above all of this." Tears spilled silently down Selene's face. "Please don't leave me, mom you promised we'd stay " "mom----" "Promise me..." her mother breathed, that no matter how cruel the world becomes ... you will never kneel to it. Promise me you will stand." Selene swallowed her sob. "I promise " Her mother smiled - soft, peaceful, eternal and closed her eyes. The world went silent. At fifteen years old, Selene buried her mother under the lone oak tree at the town cemetery. No coffin, no relatives, no tears, just a girl and her grief. That night, she stood outside under the moonlight, wind cold against her cheeks. "I don't need any of them." She whispered to the sky. From now on, I will stand alone. I will survive alone. I didn't care if no one loves me, I'll learn to live without it." Selene said all these with bitter heart and then henceforth decided to stand by her words. The moon glowed brighter -- as if it heard her. As if it remembered her. As if it waited. And far, far away ... in a land she had never seen ... a wolf opened its eyes.
