CHAPTER ONE: SNEAKY PEAKER
Kuria’s POV:
I just turned eighteen a while back and I decided this is the year. The year I turn to little miss Kim possible and leave my comfort zone.
Because according to motivational speakers “nothing good comes from being comfortable”.
I’m currently sitting in my school library semi stalking a boy. I’m not weird I promise, let just get into this.
Shall we ?
The library is quiet, the silence so deep. I have been here for over an hour, tucked in the corner where I can’t be interrupted. It’s break time, students moving around, voices that I can hear faintly through the glass.
I don’t know how to talk to new people – Not really. So the library became my shelter to avoid the awkwardness that comes with conversing with humans.
Besides, nothing gives the main character more than a girl who’s half-lost in books and half-hiding from the world.
But today is the day I talk to someone. Yes, people, I’m breaking out of my shell.
There is this guy who always comes to the library, he’s usually on one of the public systems learning programming languages like it’s no man's business. I peeked at the screen once and saw him type a bunch of codes I didn’t understand.
He looks so focused, like he is being fueled by some tech juice.
I see him packing up. So I do the same, stand up, and head for the door. I casually stand by the exit, waiting patiently for him to pass.
And then - right when he’s about to pass me – I panic.
I bolt.
I start speed walking like my life depends on it.
On second thought … maybe I’ll talk to him another day. Yes – I agree
He looked so freaking scary up close. I’m definitely sure I almost died from the number of beats my heart skipped.
“Not today, Heaven!” I whisper under my breath, walking faster to safety.
I start making my way down the hall to my class, and almost immediately, I begin seeing people I know.
“Hi-hi, Kuria, can I get your notes later ?”
“Kuria, hey!”
“Good morning, Kuria.”
“Are you coming back from the library?”
“Kuria, we need to talk later.”
“Kuria, we are going to class - don’t be late!”
I return the greetings and answer the question, all while making my way down the hallway. That is, until I spot my favorite person in the entire grade.
“Tenaiyahhhhh,” I semi-scream as I hug him.
Tenaiyah doesn’t sound like a guy’s name. It’s unusual, but I call him Tenten. It suits him better. Tenten is a good five inches taller than I am. I’m struggling on my tiptoes trying to hug him properly.
“You’re squishing me,” I mumble into his chest.
“Hey, Kuria, I missed you too.” He says, kissing my forehead.
“I missed you more,” I say, giggling like I’m high on giggle gas.
“You just saw me before break time.” He laughs.
“Let’s head to our next class.”
“I’m coming - I just need to grab my stuff. Don’t wait for me!” I call out, speed walking towards my class.
I spin around and shout, “Tenten, please keep a seat for me.”
He gives me a thumbs up and a slight wave without turning around.
___________________________________________________________
Back in my class, the silence is comforting. I’m in love with the quiet; it feels like a gift I shouldn’t take for granted.
I look at myself in the class mirror and hold my gaze for a moment. I’m probably 5’9, honestly, I can’t remember the last time I checked. My hair’s pulled back into a messy ponytail, with a cute bow sitting perfectly at the top.
My curves show pretty well in my skirt. I’m not a slim girl, I’ve got thick thighs and a very cute potatoes shaped like tummy that Tenten likes squeezing occasionally.
Someone I know called me chunky once, and it is so funny. It made me feel like peanut butter. Sure, I’m your average thick girl - but I don’t let my insecurities talk louder than I do.
I adjust my scrunchie on my wrist, reapply my lip gloss, and then I run my hand down my skirt to smooth it out.
Curvy, Cute and Confident, the important 3 C’s.
I walk to the window and lean against the windowsill sill just letting the air hit my face. My class is on the second floor, and the wind is particularly strong today. I can faintly smell the ocean - probably the beach near the school. I go there to isolate myself from the world during the weekends.
I lean out a little further. My skirt rides up slightly, but I didn’t care one bit because my class is empty. At that moment, my anxiety melts away.
Then I hear something drop behind me.
Startled, I turn around super-fast and adjust my skirt. “Helloooo? Anyone there?” I call out, and my heart almost jumps out the window. I look around and spot something rolling near the door.
Hope no one was peeking up my skirt. I’ll scoop their eyeballs out of their socket with an ice-cream spoon. Looking closer, it’s a blue screwdriver with white stripes. While inspecting the item, my eyes glance at my watch, and I panic. I am a whole 15 minutes late.
Tenten is going to strangle me, and I’ll croak. After I told heaven Not today.
After shoving the screwdriver in the pen case, I sprint towards my next class.
Reaching the hallway, I spot my form teacher, Crap! Crap! Crap! Students aren’t meant to be roaming the hall by this time. I quickly made a brilliant decision to take a detour through the back of the science building. Smart- I know right?
Abandoned, quiet and faster. Win-win.
I’m currently walking in front of the science building, and it’s a lot more abandoned than I thought. It’s a large grey structure with the windows shut and barred up. Cob webs litter the walls and ceiling, but oddly, the walkway is neat. Ghosts probably boogie down here at night. I giggle at my thoughts.
Maybe they could invite me. Hehe
I keep walking until I stop in my tracks when I hear singing. Maybe I’m imagining it, but I don’t think ghosts can sing.
Okay, I am officially petrified.
I start walking faster until I hear coughing sounds; ghosts don’t cough. I see a door slightly ajar and peek in out of curiosity. It opens into a hallway, and at the end is a door that has light peeking through the crevices.
My feet seem more curious than I because I blink, and I’m in front of the door. This is a bad idea.
Opening the door, the room is surprisingly well lit. A desk and chair sit in the far corner, tools littered everywhere, and there are components, parts and machines in every inch of the room.
It looks like Da Vinci threw up in here. Hehe
Lost in thought, I completely ignore the fact that another breathing human is in the room.
“Can I help you?”
I hear a soft but firm voice beside me. I turn around so fast my head almost dislodges from my spine. I see a man sitting at a table. I probably just distracted him from his work. He has a slightly confused look on his face, but tries to hide it.
“I apologize, I didn’t know anyone was here, I saw the door and got curious.”
“I see, you can return to your class. You’re not meant to be outside at this time.”
It is at that moment I knew - Kuria, you messed up.
He’s a freaking teacher!
“I’m sorry, Sir. It won’t happen again, I’m just le-“
My string of apologies gets cut short when I notice something familiar sitting on the table in front of him.
I move closer to the table.
“What are you doing? You need to leave,” he says.
Without responding, I open my pencil case and pull out the screwdriver I picked up earlier. It had the same blue and white striped pattern as the one sitting on the table.
“So you’re the one peeking up skirts?”
