NEW BEGINNINGS ROSELYN’S POV “Rayan!!!!” I screamed as the car crashed into a building, setting it on fire. Broken glass splattered all over the road, followed by the thudding sound of his little frame hitting harshly against the ground. The red SUV geared up again, violently freeing itself from the rubbles. I watched as the car reversed sharply, and sped off, leaving dust trails. A crowd quickly gathered as I rushed across the road, my lips quivering against each other. “Rayan” I screamed again, falling to my knees, as I picked his lifeless looking frame off the ground and pulled him into my arms. “Help me please… Someone,… anyone, …please… He’s all that I’ve got…” I croaked, my voice desperate and heavy with emotions. The crowd was frantic, as they tried to get help. “Oh my God, what happened here?…” “Quick, call an ambulance!” “…the driver was probably drunk…” “ Oh my, poor child… He looks really bad, I hope he lives through this…” each voice laden with concern. It’s been six years since William called off our wedding, six whole years since he abandoned me… and our child. With Ian’s help, I’ve managed to build a new life with my son, here in Orlando. We finally have the peace we deserve and there’s no way I’m letting anyone steal it from us, not even death!! Thankfully, an ambulance followed by cop cars raced towards us. “Please,…” I choked, stumbling over rubble as I raced towards the paramedics. My blood-drenched dress clung tightly to my skin. “You have to help him, he’s not breathing.” “We've got to get him to the hospital ma'am, he's losing a lot of blood. “ I'm coming with you,” I say firmly, as I push forward to grab Rayan's hand. The ride to the hospital was short, and almost immediately, he was taken into the emergency ward and I was left to roam the corridors, sick with worry. “Ms Colbert?” I heard my name being called distantly as I was shaken awake. “Whaaaa…” I blinked groggy eyes open, spotting a man wearing a white lab coat. That was when the events of the past few hours flashed through my mind. Instantly, the sleepiness disappeared. “Yes! Yes, that's me! Oh, my gosh, has something happened to my baby? Is he okay, How is he?” I rambled on. With a kind and patient smile, the doctor led me to a chair. “Ma'am, please calm down. My name is Doctor Chase and I'm in charge of your son's recovery.” I nod, sucking in deep, claiming breaths. “How…how is he?” The doctor's smile slowly faded. “He’s doing better now. We've been able to get him out of danger and he's now stable but…” “But what?” “He's in a coma and on life support.” The doctor’s lips flattened as he flatly announced my son's state. “Oh, my god!” I sucked in a sharp breath, my eyes misting with tears as I choked out, “My baby…” It took everything I had to pull it together and not bawl like a child right there and then. “Um, coma you said… would he need surgery?” “Yes, but with his current state, that's not possible.” The doctor informed me gently. “The accident affected his spine and this might affect his motor functions like walking or sitting but if the surgery is done, then there's a slim chance that it can be corrected in time.” I nodded, absorbing all the information, crossing my arms over my chest so the doctor wouldn’t see them trembling. “So, you're saying that if my son doesn't get surgery done when he wakes up, he's going to…. going to…” The rest of my words got cut off on a sob as several hot tears spilled down my cheek. The possibility that I could lose my baby was very real and that fact scared me more than anything. The doctor must have seen the look of panic on my face because he came closer to reassure me. “Ma'am, he's going to be fine.” “But you don't know that!” I say with a choked sob. His lips flattened. “I don't but I noticed something during the surgery…he's a fighter so hope on that, okay?” I nod, watching him leave. “Roselyn!” Ian ran towards me at full speed barely a minute later. “Hey, I came as soon as I heard! How're you feeling?” The tears that were trapped in my eyes spilled over as he wrapped his arms around me, enveloping me in his warm embrace. “Ian!” I sobbed, fisting my hands in his shirt. He allowed me to cry, pulling away shortly after to wipe my cheek tenderly. “I am so sorry that this happened. How's Rayan? Is he-” Before he could finish his sentence, a nurse walked up to us with a list. It turned out to be a list of the medical bills… the costs for the surgery, supplies used, and some other administrative bills. My eyes widened when I saw the total. It was more than I made in a year. “How am I…” I turned to Ian, defeated. “How am I supposed to get this amount of money?!” Once again, he pulled me close, whispering into my ear. “It's going to be okay. Just breathe….” I turned to the nurse who waited several metres behind, pretending not to see me crash down at the bill. I muster a weak smile, giving her my savings card, saying that I would get the rest as soon as possible. Of course, there is no way that I could get that large amount of money but I would find a way. Physically and emotionally exhausted, I proceeded to take a seat when my phone buzzed. Slipping the phone out of my pocket, I saw that it was Amanda from HR. My panic level went up a notch but I pushed it aside, donning a semi-cheerful tone. “Hey, Amanda! I know I'm late for work but um, something came up” She sighed. “It's not that, I'm calling you so you can come and clear your desk.” My mind went blank for a second. “Excuse me what?” “Look, I hate to do this but this is like the hundredth call I've made today and I would like it if you just do as I ask.” She said bluntly. Confused, I stared at the wall. “But why do I need to clear my desk? I'm sorry that I'm late but my son got into an accident and-” “I'm so sorry to hear that but the company is laying off all the staff including me, so you don't have a choice.” She says in a sad and dejected tone. What?! My phone fell to the floor, shock flooding my system.
