Chapter One: The Encounter.
I hurried my steps, I needed to make it home as soon as possible. I was making my way from the posho mill. On my head was a twenty litre bucket filled with flour. " So embarrassing," I thought. The teenage me was not pleased at that ordeal. I needed to create an image for myself. My blooming self should be smartly dressed to be noticed by the men. With all these thoughts, I hated the idea of a guy approaching me. I was a gem to be admired from a far. The hastened steps besides memade me aware of my companion, my cousin. We quickened our steps. " I need to make it back by 8 pm, It would soon be past my study time," I thought," Daddy would be mad to find me not settled with my books." I made my way to the corner leading home and suddenly I stopped. Somebody was in my way." Excuse me, " he said," I am buying my nephew matchbox from the shop nearby, would you mind waiting up so we can accompany each other seeing as we are headed the same route? " I must have responded because he quickly made it past me towards the said direction. I didn't stop, I didn't wait, I hastened my steps. The night was deadly quiet and the only sound that could be heard was the quick shallow breaths resulting from the speed and pitty patter of our steps as proof of our urgency to make it home. The familiar sound went on for a long time. Suddenly I could hear a third set of footsteps hurrying towards our direction." Another parent hurrying to make an early meal for their kids, " I thought silently. " You didn't wait, " my steps slowed. He managed to reach us. I must have offered an explanation because he picked on a conversation. Normally, I would have shunned him off already but I was intrigued by his speech and choice of word and before knowing it I was having a debate with him surrounding his need for me to be in a relation with him coupled with my detailed argument on why I shouldn't. I was so impressed that I missed noticing that my cousin was long gone. I had a crush on him,I wasn't meeting him for the first time. I had met him severally seeing as he was visiting his sister who was our immediate neighbour. "I doubt he noticed me before," I thought again. I liked him, he cleaned well after himself, something that proved real hard for most men his age. I wasn't just ready to be associated with such kind of relation. Bruce, that must have been the name he offered, walked me to our gate before saying his signature sentence, " think about it am leaving tomorrow".
