The air in the quiet corridor outside the throne room was suffocating. Kael stood near the tall windows, light catching the golden threads in his embroidered coat. His posture was relaxed, at least to the untrained eye. But the slight twitch of his fingers, the cold edge in his stare as he gazed into the hazy morning beyond the glass, told a different story. He wasn't calm. He was waiting. Heavy footsteps echoed behind him. Kael didn't have to turn to know who it was. Temir's voice cut through the silence like a blade. "You bastard."
Kael finally turned. Slowly. Calmly. "Brother. I was wondering when you'd come."
Temir's cloak swayed like a storm cloud as he strode forward. He looked pale, worse than pale, hollowed out by fury. His lips were pressed in a thin, furious line, and a vein pulsed at his temple. "What game are you playing?" Temir hissed, stopping just short of Kael. "You think you've won something? You think this is love?"
Kael arched a brow, feigning indifference. "Isn't it?"
Temir's hand twitched by his side, as if he wanted to strike him then and there. "You don't even know her. You didn't even look at her until I claimed her."
"Claimed?" Kael's voice sharpened like glass. "She's not a hound you can leash, Temir."
Temir's jaw clenched. "Don't pretend you're doing this for her. You don't love her."
"I never said I did," Kael said coolly. "But I see a woman desperate to be free of you. And a kingdom that's growing tired of your tantrums and delusions."
Temir laughed bitterly, but there was no joy in it. "You've always envied me. Always. I was born first. I had the crown. The power. The girl."
"You had none of those," Kael snapped, stepping forward. "You had a twisted obsession you called love and a title you squandered by acting like a tyrant."
Temir grabbed Kael by the collar. "Say that again."
Kael's smirk was razor-thin. "You're proving my point."
For a moment, it seemed Temir would strike him. His eyes blazed with fury, his breathing ragged. "You think father respects you now? You think he trusts you? He's only humoring you because he's desperate. You'll never be king."
Kael's voice dropped. "He won't have a choice." They stood there in silence, locked in a standoff that felt like it could shatter the palace walls. Guards stood at the end of the hall, too nervous to approach. The tension was electric, volatile. Finally, Kael shoved Temir's hands away. "You've lost everything, brother. And you know it."
Temir's expression twisted with something almost inhuman. "She was mine."
Kael's reply was a knife wrapped in velvet. "She never was."
Temir turned, shoulders shaking with silent rage. He didn't strike. Not here. Not yet. But as he walked away, Kael watched him with a calm, calculating look, the kind that said he had already planned the next move. The war between them had only just begun.
