Just Another Tuesday
The smell of burnt toast was the first thing that hit Emily when she stumbled into the kitchen. Her dad stood at the counter, armed with a butter knife and a sheepish grin. "I swear it looked golden brown in the toaster," he said, holding up a slice that looked like it had been forged in hell. Emily let out a tired laugh, brushing a lock of long brown hair from her face. "It's okay, Dad. Charcoal's a bold breakfast choice." He chuckled, dropping the toast into the trash. "Maybe you'll inherit your mother's cooking skills instead of mine." "God, I hope so." The house was already buzzing with the low-level chaos of every weekday morning. Her mom breezed in seconds later, juggling a phone call, a travel mug, and a folder of client paperwork. She kissed Emily on the head mid-sentence and vanished out the door like a hurricane in heels. Just another Tuesday. Emily grabbed a banana from the fruit bowl and her thermos of coffee. The kitchen table was covered in textbooks, her laptop open to a Google Doc half-filled with history paper she'd started at 1:00 a.m. The bright screen stung her tired eyes. She groaned. "Midterms are going to kill me." Her dad gave her a sympathetic pat on the shoulder before grabbing his car keys. "Just survive the week, kiddo. Then you get spring break. You got this." She watched him leave, then sat in silence, chewing slowly. Outside, gray clouds hung over the suburb like an unwelcome mood. It matched how she felt. Heavy. Slow. Tired. School was relentless. Calculus, chemistry, literature, history, each one was its own avalanche, waiting to bury her. Her planner looked like a battlefield. Her group project teammates hadn't responded to tests in days, and her paper on the Enlightenment was due in eight hours. Emily wasn't brilliant. She wasn't popular, or brave, or particularly special. But she tried. She studied hard, helped her parents, kept her head down. She was the kind of person who blended into the background and was okay with that. No spotlight. No drama. No risk. Her phone buzzed. Group chat: "Totally passing History lol." Kayla: "Heyyy I might not finish my part tonight... I have work xoxo." Tyson: "Sorry Em can u just put it all together? Ur better at it anyway." Emily sighed and shut off the screen. Of course. She headed upstairs to get dressed, trading her oversized hoodie for a clean one and jeans. Her mirror reflected the usual girl, long brown hair, tired eyes, minimal makeup. She didn't hate how she looked, but she never gave herself time to care much either. As she walked to school, her backpack weighing more than her will to live, she watched cars rush by. Parents dropping off kids. Teens with headphones. Life moving around her in a blur. Something about the day felt... off. A weird pressure in the air, like before a thunderstorm. She chalked it up to sleep deprivation. At school, it was all noise. Halls full of chatter, sneakers squeaking on linoleum, lockers slamming. Her best friend, Natalie, waved from across the hallway, her blond ponytail bouncing. "You look like death," Nataile said, linking arms with her. "Thanks," Emily muttered. "That's what I was going for." "Did you even sleep?" "Three hours. It's fine. I only have two quizzes and a paper due today." Nataile made a dramatic noise. "We should fake our deaths and live in the woods. I can forage. You can... sleep." Tempting. Classes dragged. Emily half-listened to lectures while mentally calculating how much time she had to finish her paper. In calculus, she got a nosebleed from stress. In biology, she spilled coffee on her notes. By lunch time, she was running on fumes and cold cafeteria fries. Natalie offered her a granola bar and a hug. "Just make it through. Then tomorrow. Them boom, you're free." Emily smiled weakly. "If I survive." But deep down, she wasn't even sure what she was surviving for. College? A job? A life where everything just keeps spinning and she's always tired? No, she shook the thought away. She had good parents. A solid friend. Things could be worse. She didn't know then how much worse they were about to get. It was late when Emily left the library. The sky already a blanket of deep gray. She clutched her laptop bag close to her side, hoodie pulled tight as cold wind sliced through the night. The streetlights buzzed faintly. Her footsteps echoed on the empty sidewalk. A car passed, headlights briefly blinding her. She blinked, adjusting. Then she heard it, a sound that didn't belong. A sharp screech. Tires. And then, a deafening horn. Emily turned. Too late. She saw the truck, headlights wide as moons, barreling toward her through a red light. For a second, everything froze, the world narrowing to that single, blinding instant. There was no time to scream. Silence. It was the first thing she noticed. Not the cold. Not the pain. Just... Silence. Then a sharp, aching pressure in her chest. Like someone had ripped her lungs out and shoved them back upside down. Her body felt wrong. Heavy and fragile at once. Something wet tickled her cheek.
