The Final Hunt

593 Words
The morning sun filtered through the silk curtains of Raven's guest suite, casting golden streaks across the floor. A soft breeze rustled the fabric as she sat before the vanity, her maid brushing her hair into a loose, elegant braid. Today was the final day of the royal hunting tournament, and while the men would be off in the woods proving their valor, the women would remain behind, drinking, gossiping, and watching from the tents. Raven adjusted the lace on her sleeves as she stood. "Let's go. I'd like to get some air before the others arrive." In the courtyard below, noblewomen milled about in flowing gowns, their laughter light and brittle. Raven walked slowly, her steps controlled, the practiced grace of nobility wrapped tightly around her like a corset. She spotted Duke Alistair Draven near the stables, checking the bridle of his steed. He looked up, surprised to see her alone. "Lady Raven," he greeted with a slight bow, the corner of his mouth tugging into a faint smile. "You're not joining the hunt?" She shook her head. "I think I've had enough of blood sport for the week." He chuckled, then leaned in slightly. "Be cautious around the Second Prince," he said, his voice low and serious. "I know Kael wears charm like armor, but underneath, he and Temir aren't so different." Raven tilted her head. "You've dealt with them both before?" Draven's jaw clenched. "I've seen what power does to men. Kael is calculated, more than he lets on. And Temir... well, you already know what kind of monster he is." Before she could respond, one of the royal horns sounded. The hunting party was preparing to ride out. Alistair mounted his horse and nodded to her one last time. "Stay sharp, Lady Raven." Raven returned to the pavilion with the other noblewomen, choosing a seat with a good view of the field. It wasn't long before she caught a glimpse of someone familiar, Elira. The young commoner girl stood quietly near a servant's post, her eyes shy as she looked around. Raven approached her without hesitation. "Elira." The girl jumped slightly, but smiled when she recognized her. "Lady Raven. I, didn't think you'd remember me." "I do," Raven said softly. "And I'm sorry. For what happened at the tea party. Those girls... weren't your friends." Elira's expression tightened but she nodded. "Thank you for saying that. I didn't expect you to." They sat together for a while, watching as falcons soared above and riders thundered into the distance. After a moment, Elira spoke again. "Kael. He's not what he seems, is he?" Raven turned slowly. "Why do you say that?" "I heard things," Elira whispered. "Servants talk when they think no one listens. He's... calculating. Smiles too perfectly. He uses people and discards them when they're no longer useful. I think that's worse than someone like Temir, who doesn't hide the monster he is." Raven looked down at her gloved hands, her mind a flurry of memories, fears, and schemes. "Thank you for telling me." As the sun began to set, the horns blew again, signaling the end of the tournament. Riders began returning, dust-covered and triumphant. Applause erupted as Kael emerged from the trees with a large stag strapped to his horse, followed closely by Duke Alistair. Raven remained still, her eyes unreadable. She could feel the pressure building. Between Kael's manipulations, Temir's obsession, and her own web of lies, the game was escalating, and it was only a matter of time before something broke.
