The Home Coming
The whole place was well decorated with beautiful lights, and the sound of a sweet song could be heard in the background. It was a happy occasion because Andrew Sinclair had just returned to the country after spending years overseas with his wife. And now, he was back to think about his father's company as the head of the Sinclair Empire. Today was a joyous occasion for the Sinclair family as well as well-wishers. But not every guest in the hall was welcomed.
Richard Morgan, who was the husband of Maya Sinclair, the youngest daughter of the Sinclair family, was going around serving the guests. It was a humiliating scene because he was supposed to be part of the family and part of the occasion, but here he was, serving alongside the staff. He had already gotten used to this because, for two years, he had spent time with the Sinclair family. He had only been treated like trash and rejected by members of the Sinclair family.
He was attending to a guest when he heard his name from behind. He was distracted and accidentally spilled a drink on his hand and onto the person next to him.
"What is wrong with you?" Mr. Anderson shouted angrily. "How could you ruin my dress? That is worth a huge amount of money, the kind that, if you worked from now until the end of time, you wouldn't be able to afford. How useless could you be?" Mr. Anderson scoffed.
"I'm really sorry, sir. It was an accident. I never intended to spill the drink on you. Please allow me to clean it up," Richard said, reaching out.
"Get your hands off me!" Mr. Anderson snapped. "I don’t need servants who can’t handle a simple task." Mr. Anderson continued to insult Richard in front of the other guests.
The scene attracted the attention of others in the hall, and just then, Lady Sinclair got to know about it. She quickly approached Mr. Anderson and apologized to him for Richard's mistake. Then she turned to Richard angrily.
"You are just good for nothing. You aren't good at anything at all. Just look at the way you've embarrassed me, especially in front of our guests. You've ruined his dress! That’s worth a fortune. How can you always do everything wrong? There is nothing good you could do. Just look at how miserable you are!" Lady Sinclair yelled.
"Now apologize to our guests, kneel down, and apologize to him right this moment!" Lady Sinclair ordered.
"I haven’t done anything wrong. I explained to him why it happened, that it was just an accident, and I never intended to spill the drink on him. And I have apologized to him but he refused to accept my apology," Richard said.
"That’s because you haven’t done it the right way! Kneel down and apologize to Mr. Anderson right now, in front of everyone! You’re useless.I don’t know why Maya agree to marry you?!" Lady Sinclair said angrily.
When the guests heard this, they were instantly shocked. They had heard rumors about the useless son-in-law of the Sinclair family, but they had no idea that it was Richard. Now, they could clearly see how useless he was, and everyone began to gossip about him.
"This is the useless man who married your daughter, Maya?" one guest asked curiously.
"Yes, he is the one. He may have married my daughter, but I'm very sure that very soon, Maya will leave him for someone better—someone who can take proper care of her, not some trash like him," Lady Sinclair said.
"Maya deserves better. I would have let it go if Maya had married someone of high profile. But instead, she chose this man over me. This is very pathetic. I never expected Maya to lower her standards for a man like this," Mr. Anderson said.
The conversation attracted more attention, and this time, Andrew Sinclair heard about it and immediately came forward. When he found out what had happened, he was also furious with Richard. He had never liked Richard and believed his sister deserved someone better, so he also asked Richard to kneel down and apologize to Mr. Anderson.
"Do you really know who Mr. Anderson is? His family and the kind of influence he has in this country? For someone like you to ruin his dress? And you think you can go free? Then you must be mistaken. It is really fair enough that Mr. Anderson did not ask you to replace the dress. But he's only requesting that you kneel down and apologize to him. If you refuse, you should be ready to bear the consequences," Andrew said sternly.
Richard tried to explain what had happened, but Andrew wasn't willing to listen at all. He just wanted Richard to kneel and apologize to Mr. Anderson, because he wouldn't want to lose the favor of Anderson, who was a prominent man in the country.
The Sinclair family was a second-class family in the country, while the Anderson family was a first-class family. So, there was no room to offend Mr. Anderson. After all, he was the same man that the entire Sinclair family wanted Maya to marry, but she chose Richard over him because of a promise her father made to Richard.
Years ago, when Mr. Sinclair was attacked by some thugs, Richard defended him and helped him. Richard sustained some injuries in the process, but Mr. Sinclair took care of him. Mr. Sinclair promised Richard that for saving his life, he would have his daughter marry him. Maya, hesitant at first, agreed to marry Richard in order to fulfill her father’s request. A few months after their wedding, Mr. Sinclair passed away, and from that point, the Sinclair family began to mistreat Richard, believing he wasn't good enough for their daughter.
The moment Maya heard that her husband was being humiliated, she quickly arrived at the scene and asked what was going on. She came just in time because Richard was about to kneel to apologize, but now, she quickly put him back on his feet. She knew there was nothing Richard could have done to deserve this kind of humiliation in front of all the guests, so she asked for an explanation, and Richard related everything that had happened. Just then Maya noticed someone grabbed her.
When Maya looked to see who had held her, it turned out to be Lilian, her elder sister. "What is wrong with you, Maya?" Lilian shouted. "How can you still support this man in front of everyone, in the presence of Mr. Anderson? You must really lack any sense of responsibility over enjoyment," Lilian advised. But Maya was resolute in defending Richard.
"Richard told you it was an accident and a mistake. He didn’t do it intentionally, so this issue shouldn’t be taken so seriously. If you want him to do anything else, then he can, but definitely not kneel down in front of the guests to apologize to Mr. Anderson. I won’t allow him to do that."
Slap.
Lady Sinclair slapped Maya for defending Richard over Mr. Anderson.
Then she turned to Richard. "And you, Richard, get out of here! Get out of the house until the whole party is over, so you won’t cause any more trouble for us. You’re just a useless son-in-law. I never would have allowed Maya to marry you if I had known this marriage would lead to... this."
The guests looked at Richard with disdain and disgust as he walked out of the hall. Maya immediately rushed to follow him, but she was stopped by Lilian.
"If you take one more step, then consider yourself disowned by this family. Don’t you dare go after that man when your family is here, still in the mood of celebration!" Lady Sinclair said. Maya was confused about what to do, but Richard insisted she stay.
"You can stay here, Maya, so as not to cause any more trouble for your family. Once the party is over, I will return," Richard said, and he made his way out of the hall. Maya was furious and walked back toward the home, but she couldn’t stay with them. So, she decided to go upstairs to her room.
As for Richard, he had endured a lot of humiliation and embarrassment at the hands of the Sinclair family. But today, he regretted being poor. He wished that if his situation ever changed for the better, he would deal with all those who had humiliated him.
