Chapter 2- Shattered

1048 Words
“You are leaving this house right now!” My father’s roar cracked through the air like a whip. His finger stabbed toward me, his face red with rage. “Take your things and get out of my house. You are no daughter of mine!” Before I could breathe, before I could even find the words to defend myself, he spun on his heel and stormed out, the sound of the door slamming reverberating through the hall. The silence that followed was louder than his yelling. “Daniel…” My voice cracked as I turned toward him. But he wouldn’t even look at me. His jaw was tight, his lips pressed into a thin line. I could see the disgust in his eyes the disgust meant for me. Lisa stepped closer to him, her hand brushing his sleeve, her face painted with the perfect mask of sorrow. “Daniel, don’t be upset,” she whispered softly, though loud enough for me to hear. “Ella… she must have been confused. You deserve better than this humiliation.” Better ? Humiliation? Her words sliced through me, each one carefully chosen to bury me deeper. Daniel’s eyes flickered to mine one last time, hard and cold, before he shook his head and walked away. Just like that. The man I thought I’d marry. The man who once promised me forever. He didn’t fight for me. He didn’t even ask. He just left. And then it was just me. Me… and them. The moment Daniel was gone, Lisa’s expression shifted. The wide, guilty eyes vanished, replaced with a smirk so sharp it could cut glass. My stepmother’s hand, which had been fluttering against her chest in fake horror, dropped to her side as her lips curled into a satisfied smile. Finally, they didn’t bother pretending. “You should’ve seen your face,” Lisa said, her voice light, almost amused. “Pathetic. You didn’t even know what was happening, did you?” My chest tightened. “What… what are you talking about?” Her laughter rang out, cruel and unrestrained. “Oh, come on, Ella. Don’t act stupid. Did you really think that the drink I handed you was just wine?” My stomach turned to stone. “You…” My voice broke. “You drugged me?” Lisa tilted her head, her smile widening. “Relax. It wasn’t anything dangerous. Just enough to make sure you’d lose control. Enough to ruin your precious engagement night.” My heart raced. Images flashed in my head, the strange heat in my veins, the dizziness, stumbling into the wrong room. His face. His touch. My body betraying me. I couldn’t breathe. “Why? Why would you do this to me?” Her eyes glittered with pure hatred. “Because I’m sick of you. Do you know what it’s like, living in your shadow? Father always comparing me to you. Always saying Ella this, Ella that. You got the looks, the pity after your mother died, the stupid shares she left you. Everything I wanted, you had. And now?” She leaned closer, her voice a hiss. “Now you have nothing.” I staggered back, shaking my head. “You took Daniel from me… you ruined me.” Lisa’s smirk only grew. “Daniel was never yours. Not really. He deserves someone better. Someone like me.” It felt like the ground split beneath me. My stepmother’s voice slid in then, smooth and venomous. “Don’t look so surprised, darling. Did you really think we’d let you waltz through life untouchable? Your father may have tolerated you because of your late mother, but me? I never did. I’ve watched you play the perfect daughter for years, pretending you were better than us. Well, not anymore.” Tears burned at my eyes, blurring my vision. “But why… Why destroy me like this? What did I ever do to you?” Her smile was cold. “You existed. That’s enough.” The final thread inside me snapped. My body shook, my hands trembling at my sides. I wanted to scream, to fight, to claw back at them for everything they had stolen, but all I could do was stand there, tears streaking my face, my chest caving in under the weight of betrayal. Lisa stepped closer, her voice dropping low, meant only for me. “Run away, Ella. Because if you stay, I’ll take everything you have left. And Daniel? He’s mine now. He’ll never even remember you.” I stared at her, my heart breaking into pieces too sharp to hold. The girl I grew up with. The girl I once called my sister. And the woman who wore my mother’s ring, pretending to care for me. Both of them had ripped away everything I loved. I was shattered. But somewhere deep inside, buried under the pain, something else stirred. Something sharper than grief. Something that would not let me die here in the ruins they created. I didn’t know it then. But I will remember this moment. Every word, every smirk, every betrayal. And one day, I would make them regret it, they would pay for everything they did. I forced my legs to move, stumbling to my room. My chest ached worse than the sting of their words, because the one man who should have believed me, my father hadn’t even given me the chance. With shaking hands, I grabbed my phone and dialed Daniel’s number. Maybe if I could explain, he would listen to me, maybe he’d still love me. “Daniel, please..” I started, voice breaking. His laugh was sharp, cruel. “Don’t call me again, Ella. Do you think I’d marry a cheap w***e? You disgust me.” The words cut, but he wasn’t finished. “I never loved you. You were always too dull, too desperate. Maybe your sister’s better than you damn it , at least she isn’t pathetic.” The line went dead. The phone slipped from my fingers, clattering to the floor. My vision blurred, my whole body trembling. I couldn’t breathe or think. Something inside me cracked open. With tears streaming, I packed what little I owned. Clothes, the locket from my mother, the pieces of a life that had just collapsed.
