The Bride Who Was Never Chosen
Chapter 1
The first thing I noticed was the silence.
Not the peaceful kind of silence that comes before a beautiful moment.
This was the kind of silence that announced the end of something.
I stood at the entrance of the grand ballroom, wearing a wedding dress I had spent months choosing, surrounded by hundreds of guests who had come to witness the happiest day of my life.
At least, that was what I thought.
The crystal chandeliers above me sparkled. The flowers along the aisle were arranged perfectly. The music had been carefully selected.
Everything was perfect.
Everything except the groom.
Alexander Carter was missing.
My fingers tightened around my bouquet.
One minute passed.
Then five.
Then ten.
The smile I had forced onto my face slowly disappeared.
Whispers filled the room.
“Where is he?”
“Did something happen?”
“I heard he hasn’t arrived yet.”
Every word felt like a blade against my skin.
I looked toward the entrance again, hoping—begging—that he would appear.
Because Alexander Carter would never do this to me.
Not after three years.
Not after all the promises.
Not after he held my hands beneath the stars and told me, “Ava, no matter what happens, I will choose you.”
I believed him.
That was my mistake.
“Ava.”
My best friend Lily approached me, her eyes filled with sadness.
I already knew.
I could see it on her face.
“Tell me he’s coming,” I whispered.
Lily looked down.
That was the answer.
My heart shattered before she even spoke.
“I’m sorry.”
The words echoed in my head.
Sorry.
That was what people said when they had nothing left to offer.
My phone vibrated.
A message.
From Alexander.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
I can’t marry you. Don’t wait for me.
I stared at the screen.
That was all.
Three years of love.
Three years of memories.
Three years of believing in a future together.
Destroyed by one message.
The room suddenly felt too small.
I could hear people whispering.
I could feel their eyes on me.
The abandoned bride.
The woman who wasn’t chosen.
The woman who wasn’t enough.
But I refused to break in front of them.
I lifted my chin, turned around, and walked away.
---
I didn’t cry until the doors closed behind me.
The moment I was alone, the tears came.
I pressed my hand against my chest, trying to understand how the person who promised to protect my heart had become the reason it was breaking.
Then my phone rang.
Alexander.
For a moment, hope returned.
I hated myself for it.
I answered.
“Why?”
Silence.
Then his voice.
“Ava…”
“Why did you leave me there?”
“I didn’t want to hurt you.”
A bitter laugh escaped my lips.
“You didn’t want to hurt me?”
My voice shook.
“You humiliated me in front of everyone.”
“Ava, you don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Silence.
That silence was worse than any answer.
Because I understood.
There was another woman.
“Is it Victoria?”
Another pause.
My eyes closed.
I already knew.
Victoria Hayes.
The daughter of one of the most powerful families in the country.
Beautiful.
Elegant.
Perfect.
The woman everyone believed belonged beside Alexander Carter.
“You chose her.”
“Ava—”
“I hope she gives you everything I couldn’t.”
I ended the call.
But before I could put my phone away, another notification appeared.
A news article.
Alexander Carter Spotted With Victoria Hayes Hours Before Wedding.
My hands shook as I opened it.
There they were.
A picture of him holding her hand.
Smiling.
Happy.
The same smile he used to give me.
Below the picture was a quote from Victoria.
“Some people are meant to find their way back to where they belong.”
I read the sentence twice.
She wasn’t apologizing.
She wasn’t hiding.
She wanted me to know.
She had won.
---
Three weeks later, I was no longer the woman who believed in fairy tales.
The world had moved on.
The media found a new story.
The guests returned to their normal lives.
Alexander Carter continued building his empire.
And I was left rebuilding mine.
My family’s company was suffering because of the scandal.
Partners were leaving.
Investors were losing confidence.
Everyone saw me as the woman who had lost.
But they didn’t know something.
I was done losing.
That was when Alexander King entered my life.
His name alone carried power.
The billionaire who built King Enterprises from nothing.
The man who could destroy companies without raising his voice.
The man who had one enemy he hated more than anyone.
The Carter family.
So when his invitation arrived, I knew accepting it was dangerous.
I just didn’t know how dangerous.
---
The King Enterprises building was intimidating.
Everything about it screamed control.
The employees walked quietly.
The atmosphere was serious.
Nobody wasted time.
When I reached the top floor, the receptionist opened the door.
“Mr. King is waiting.”
I stepped inside.
And saw him.
Alexander King.
He stood beside the window, looking over the city.
He didn’t look like a man who asked for things.
He looked like a man who took them.
When he turned around, his eyes locked onto mine.
Cold.
Sharp.
Impossible to read.
“Ava Carter.”
His voice was calm.
“You look different from the woman everyone described.”
I frowned.
“And what woman did they describe?”
“Someone broken.”
I stared at him.
“And am I?”
A faint smile touched his lips.
“No.”
That answer surprised me.
He walked toward the desk and placed a file in front of me.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Information.
My eyes narrowed.
“You investigated me?”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“I investigated the people who destroyed you.”
My heart stopped.
“What do you know?”
“Enough to know Alexander Carter did not leave you because he stopped loving you.”
I froze.
“Then why?”
“Because he was forced.”
I wanted to believe him.
I hated that I wanted to.
Then I saw the last document.
A photograph.
A young Alexander King.
A young Alexander Carter.
Standing together.
Friends.
My eyes widened.
“You knew him?”
Alexander’s expression changed.
For the first time, I saw something beneath the coldness.
Pain.
“Before our families became enemies, we were brothers.”
My breath caught.
“What happened?”
His jaw tightened.
“The Carter family took something from mine.”
“What?”
His eyes met mine.
“My mother.”
Silence.
I didn’t know what to say.
Then he pushed another document toward me.
A marriage contract.
My eyes widened.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You want me to marry you?”
“For one year.”
I laughed softly.
“You’re insane.”
“Maybe.”
He leaned closer.
“But you need power.”
I looked at the contract.
“And what do you need?”
His answer came immediately.
“You.”
I looked up.
“Why?”
“Because the Carter family trusts you.”
A dangerous silence filled the room.
“And because when you walk back into their world…”
His eyes darkened.
“They won’t realize they invited their enemy inside.”
I should have walked away.
I should have refused.
But then I remembered the wedding.
The whispers.
The humiliation.
The feeling of being powerless.
I picked up the pen.
Alexander watched me.
“You understand this is not a normal marriage.”
“I know.”
“You may hate me.”
“I don’t know you.”
A small smile appeared.
“Good.”
I signed.
The moment the ink touched the paper, my life changed.
Alexander took the contract.
“Welcome to my world, Mrs. King.”
I stood.
“Don’t mistake this marriage for ownership.”
His eyes followed me.
“I wouldn’t dare.”
I turned toward the door.
Then his voice stopped me.
“One more thing.”
I looked back.
“Alexander Carter is not the only person who betrayed you.”
My heart froze.
“What does that mean?”
But he didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at the document in his hand.
The one hidden beneath the contract.
The one I hadn’t seen.
A birth record.
A secret that connected my family…
To his.
And suddenly, I realized something.
This marriage was never just about revenge.
It was about a truth that could destroy both our families.
And I was the missing piece.
