Esme's head was spinning. She was suddenly incredibly nauseous. A wolf!? They had sensed her wolf!?
Alexander watched as the young girls face went sheet white. Both brothers stood stunned. How could she possibly have been unaware of what she is?
Christian had once come across a young boy hidden in a pack in Romania while he had been traveling with his father there. The young boy had been the same. Even at such a young age, the boy had a connection with his wolf. Though he had never transformed he claimed to hear his wolf speak to him. The pack worshipped him and hailed him as a future Alpha. As they left the pack Christian remembered asking his father about the boy.
"The boy is a gift from the Moon Goddess." Magnus had seemed somber as he replied. Seeing the confused look on his sons face he continued. "Those who are chosen by the godess are blessed and cursed. They are blessed with powers and a connection to the Goddess that will never truly be understood. But, they are also cursed my boy. The trials and tribulations that boy will face make me shudder. For him to reach true greatness he must experience true pain. Only stone burried deep in the earth under intense heat and pressure can become a diamond."
Esme was reeling. It wasn't possible for her to be a wolf. She was a witch that much she was absolutely sure of. She had after all felt a strong connection to magic even when it wasnt hers. The only hybrids ever born, had been born after strenuous and lengthy ceremonies and spells. So strenuous that women who had, had multiple children would eventually refuse to go through them again for fear of stress on the unborn child. Every single hybrid born, had been born in the Moon Blood Pack. There was no way Esme had been born on pack lands or gone through the necessary spells to be born a hybrid. When Esme had been born the pack was in its third year of a deadly infection. An infection which mainly targeted newborn babies. A year prior the Alpha had decreeded due to the danger to his precious hybrids no one was permitted to mate without special permission.
"I don't have a wolf. You must be mistaken." She told the two giants before her. She realized now how far they towered over her. She found herself wondering how old they were. Dismissing the idea completely, she began to scope out the woods where they stood focusing her senses on the world surrounding her.
"I can assure you we are not mistaken. We have been alone in these woods for over a week. The closest camp or tourist site is over a hundred miles away. You are the first person we have come across and I know a wolf when I sense one. When we found you the aura did not get farther away it got closer. I still feel it now as you stand before us." Christian stated more gruffly than he intended. He was no longer irritated with the girl he was furious with whoever had ruled over her. What kind of pack had she come from where they don't educate their pups about what they are? They were surly a degenerate twisted pack and the rumors must certainly be true.
Esme was dumbstruck. He was right. Though her powers were still barely coming back to her she could feel it slowly rebuilding within herself. There was something else there deep within. She felt it. She could feel her magic flowing in and out of whatever was burried deep within. Why had she never felt it before?
"Asha, what are we!?" She asked her only partner through everything. Asha had been there through every beating. Why would Asha hide something from her?
"What are you!?" She shouted into the void of her mind to receive only silence. Esme's heart was racing, pounding against her ribcage as if it would burst straight from her chest.
"Esmerelda, you do know what a wolf is don't you?" Alexander asked her. He had moved closer subconsciously. He had seen that look on her perfect delicate face. Panic mixed with shock. He watched as her chest heaved and her hands began to shake. Something deep within him wanted nothing more than to comfort her.
"Of course I know what a wolf is. I'm not stupid. But there's no way I could be one. There's just no way." she replied shaking her head. As she did her magnificent red curls shone like fire dancing as it was caught in the sun rays coming in patches filtered through the trees. It took Alexander's breath away.
"Where do you come from that your true nature was hidden from you?" Christian practically growled out. Esme visibily jumped at his tone her big emerald eyes growing into big green saucers. Her whole body tensed as if preparing herself for whatever came next. Christian saw this and immediately softened moving closer to her.
"I didn't mean to scare you." He told her softly before continuing. "The reason we are out this far, is to look for a pack. It's rumored this pack is involved in illicit activities. Do you know anything about that?"
Though he had been trying to connect with the girl, show her they were there to punish someone who potentially hurt her, it seemed to have the opposite effect.
Esme was in danger. These men, they were out this far looking for her pack. It was true then. These illicit activies Christian spoke of were two people being fated to love each other and hiding away to live in peace. Would they really kill her for being a witch? What if she truly was a hybrid? What would they do to her then!?
"They will not hurt you. Go with them Esmerelda." Asha told her softly from within. Esme shook her head as tears began to form in her eyes.
"How can I trust you, Asha?" Esme replied. With every fiber of her being she wanted to believe. Asha was the only constant in her life. Before Alice, before Derrick, Asha was all that Esme had ever had. She was her closest friend and confidante. Asha had kept her going when she had nothing left.
"We are one, Esmerelda." Asha replied. Though it was barely a whisper it seemed to reviberate through Esme's entire being. She knew it was true. Asha had never led her astray before. Not only did Esme want to trust Asha something in her was screaming to trust the two strangers. She wanted nothing more than to give into it.
However there was a power about these two strangers. A power she had only felt in the domineering presence of Alpha Marxus. What if she did lead them there? What would they do to the pack members? What would happen to Alice and her family?
"If I take you there, what will you do?" She asked terrified of the answer. Even asking was a partial admission she knew where the pack was.
"Those who deserve it, will be punished accordingly." Alexander replied stooping slightly as he approached to meet her eyes. As his storm cloud eyes met hers, she felt a shock rush through her body. Her hairs stood on end. His eyes had a soft expression to them and it made Esme want to melt on the spot. He had honest eyes, eyes she had seen before only once. Soft brown beautiful eyes that belonged to the first person Esme had ever allowed herself to trust, Alice.
"And the witches?" She asked him meeting his eyes and holding his electric gaze. His eyebrows rose in question.
"Witches?" Christian asked creeping closer to where the two stood with locked gazes. They seemed to be caught in a trance and he had no intention of breaking it. As he watched his heart began to race and for some strange reason he felt a pang of jealousy at his brother's nearness to the girl.
"My pack... witches live alongside wolves." She told them. She was unsure how much to reveal and she certainly wasn't going to mention hybrids until she was able to scope their reaction. She watched Alexander's eyes closely and was shocked when they wrinkled as his whole face broke into a massive grin. His beautiful plump lips moved up exposing his bright white teeth. Esme found herself disarmed suddenly lost in the depth and mirth in his expression.
"We are not from the old country Esmerelda. We live and work alongside witches in our pack as well. As long as their magic is never used to cause harm they have nothing to fear from us." Alexander spoke softly the grin still on his face. He watched as she contemplated her next move. Her bright red eyebrows hitched upward, she covered her mouth in deep thought. Alex could practically see as she weighed his words in her mind. Finally she sighed heavily meeting his gaze again.
"Take me far away from here and I'll tell you everything." she whispered.
