chapter 1 (The price)
The office smelled like whiskey and blood.
Not real blood. The kind that lingers after bad deals.
I stood in the middle of it with a manila folder in my hands and my heart in my throat.
My dad was across from me. Drunk. Sweating.
Across from him sat Damian Cole.
Grey suit. Black watch. Eyes like ice.
He didn’t look at me. He looked at the debt.
"$350,000," Damian said. His voice was quiet. That’s what made it worse. "With interest."
My dad nodded. Fast. "I’ll pay it. I swear. Just give me—"
"You had 30 days," Damian cut him off. "You gave me excuses."
Silence.
I clutched the folder tighter. Inside were my mom’s hospital bills. Rent. Tuition.
Everything we owed.
Damian finally looked at me.
Up and down. Clinical. Like I was a line item.
"Who’s this?" he asked.
"My daughter," my dad said. Too fast. "Aria. She’s 19. College."
Damian’s eyes narrowed. "And?"
And then my dad did the thing I’d been dreading for 3 days.
He pushed me forward.
"She can work it off," he said. "For you."
The room went cold.
"What?" The word came out before I could stop it.
My dad wouldn’t look at me. "1 year, Mr. Cole. She works for you. Cleans. Cooks. Whatever. And you wipe the debt."
Damian leaned back in his chair. Tapped his pen once.
"No."
My stomach dropped.
"But—" my dad started.
"I don’t need a maid, Mr. Bennett," Damian said. "And I don’t do charity."
He stood. 6’2 of tailored suit and violence.
"Then what do you want?" my dad asked. Desperate now.
Damian looked at me again.
This time it wasn’t clinical.
It was possession.
"I want her," he said. "For 1 year. She signs a contract. She lives in my house. She follows my rules. At the end of 1 year, the debt is cleared."
My knees went weak.
"No," I whispered. "Dad. No."
My dad grabbed my arm. "Aria. It’s just a year. We need this."
"Need?" I yanked away. "You gambled it away!"
"Watch your tone," Damian said. Not to me. To my dad.
My dad flinched.
Damian slid a paper across the desk.
A contract.
1 year.
Exclusive.
Collateral.
"Sign it," Damian said to me. "Or I take the house. And your mom’s hospital."
I looked at the last line.
*Signature of Collateral: ___________*
My hands shook.
"She cooks?" I asked. Voice breaking.
"No," Damian said. "She’s mine."
The words hit like a slap.
"That’s not—"
"That’s the deal," Damian said. "Take it or leave it. You have 10 seconds."
My dad was crying now. "Please, baby. For your mom."
For my mom.
Always for my mom.
I picked up the pen.
My signature was ugly. Shaky.
Aria Bennett.
Damian took the paper. Read it. Then he smiled.
Not kind.
Final.
"Congratulations, Miss Bennett," he said. "1 year. You’re mine."
He stood.
"Driver will pick you up tonight. 8 PM. Pack one bag. Nothing else is yours anymore."
He walked out.
My dad collapsed into the chair.
I stood there with a contract in my hand and my life gone.
8 PM.
The Cole mansion.
1 year.
---
Night.
Black SUV. Tinted windows.
Elena opened the door for me. "Miss Bennett."
The mansion was bigger than my whole neighborhood. White. Cold. Gates that looked like prison bars.
Damian was waiting in the foyer.
He didn’t smile.
"Rule #1," he said. "You don’t leave without permission."
"Rule #2," he continued. "You don’t have friends."
"Rule #3," his eyes locked on mine. "You don’t touch me."
He stepped closer.
"And Rule #4," he whispered. "You remember why you’re here."
He took the pen from my hand. The same one I signed with.
Tucked it into his pocket.
"Welcome home, collateral."
The doors closed behind me.
Locking.
