The Keeper Of The First Name

501 Words
The hooded stranger stood motionless, his crimson eyes fixed on Kael. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The ancient temple seemed to hold its breath. “You know my name?” Kael finally asked. “I know the name you were born with,” the stranger replied. “The one the world was forced to forget.” Kael tightened his grip on the silver-bound book. “Who are you?” The man removed the rest of his cloak. Beneath it, he wore dark armor etched with glowing runes. Around his neck hung a crystal identical to the one Kael had carried since leaving the village. “My name is Malrec,” he said. “I was once the greatest of the Keepers of Names.” Seraphine entered the chamber, leaning heavily on her staff. “No,” she said. “You were our greatest betrayal.” Malrec smiled sadly. “History is written by those who survive.” He turned back to Kael. “Thousands of years ago, the balance between the human world and the Realm of Names depended on a single sacred word—the First Name. It was the source from which every true name drew its power.” Kael listened in silence. “When darkness sought to claim that power, the Council made a desperate choice. They hid the First Name inside the soul of a newborn child.” Kael felt his heartbeat quicken. “That child… was me.” Malrec nodded. “Yes.” The truth struck like lightning. He had never been abandoned because he was unwanted. He had been hidden because he was the safest place to protect the greatest power ever known. “But someone erased my memories,” Kael whispered. “I did,” Malrec answered without hesitation. “You?” “I had no choice. If you had remembered too soon, every kingdom, every tyrant, and every creature of darkness would have hunted you.” Seraphine slammed her staff against the floor. “Enough lies!” Golden light burst from the staff, filling the chamber. Malrec raised a hand, and crimson energy met the golden glow. The two forces collided, shaking the temple from its foundations. Kael stumbled backward as ancient pillars cracked around him. Suddenly, the silver-bound book floated into the air. Its pages turned rapidly before stopping on a hidden chapter. Letters of light appeared across the page. The First Name cannot be spoken. It must be awakened. The words blazed so brightly that everyone shielded their eyes. Then the temple bells rang for the first time in a thousand years. Outside, the Hunter lifted its head and roared. Across distant kingdoms, forgotten shrines began to glow. In hidden castles, ancient enemies awoke from centuries of sleep. Far beyond the mountains, a queen dressed in white looked toward the horizon and whispered, “So… the Nameless Child has finally begun to remember.” The balance of the world had shifted. And there would be no turning back.
