The Child Without a Name
The rain began the night the child was born. It wasn’t an ordinary rain. The elders would later say the heavens wept before they opened. Thunder rolled across the mountains, lightning split the sky, and every dog in the village howled as if warning the people that something ancient had awakened. In the forgotten village of Nkara, hidden deep within the Ashwood Forest, a woman gave birth in silence. She was alone. No midwife dared answer her call. The villagers had abandoned her months before, frightened by a prophecy whispered by the oldest seer: “When the child without a name is born, kingdoms will fall, crowns will shatter, and the truth buried beneath the world will awaken.” The moment the baby cried, every candle in the hut went out. The woman clutched her son tightly against her chest. “You are not a curse,” she whispered through tears. “You are my child.” Outside, shadows moved between the trees. Not wolves. Not men. They watched without making a sound. By dawn, the woman was dead. No wound marked her body. No poison was found. It was as though life itself had simply left her. The villagers discovered the baby lying beside her, wrapped in a faded cloth. Around his tiny wrist was a black thread unlike anything they had ever seen. It shimmered whenever sunlight touched it. No one knew who had tied it there. No one dared remove it. The village chief stepped forward. “What is the child’s name?” he asked. Silence. No one answered. The woman had left no letter. No family claimed him. No record of his birth existed. “He has no name,” one elder muttered. Another shook his head. “Then let him remain nameless.” From that day forward, the child became known only as the Nameless One. The villagers fed him because tradition demanded that no child be left to die. But they never embraced him. Children refused to play with him. Mothers pulled their sons and daughters away whenever he walked past. Even the village priest avoided looking into his strange silver-gray eyes. As the years passed, strange things followed him. Flowers bloomed where his tears fell. Birds landed on his shoulders without fear. Yet every full moon, the same nightmare haunted him. A city burning. A crown lying in the dust. A voice calling his name— A name he had never known. Every time he woke, his heart pounded as though the dream had been real. On the morning of his seventeenth birthday, an old traveler entered Nkara carrying nothing but a weathered staff and a cloak covered in road dust. The moment he saw the young man, he froze. His eyes widened. Then, with a trembling voice, he whispered words that would change the Nameless One’s life forever. “So… you’re still alive.” The village fell silent. For the first time in seventeen years, someone looked at the Nameless One not with fear… …but with recognition.
