The Whispering Forest

391 Words
The morning mist clung to the trees as Kael tightened the worn strap of his satchel. Beside him, Elder Soren stared silently toward the dark forest that stretched beyond the village. The old man’s expression was troubled. “It has begun,” Soren murmured. “What has?” Kael asked. “The forest has awakened.” The words sent a chill through Kael. He had always been warned never to enter the Whispering Forest. Travelers who ignored the warning either returned changed—or never returned at all. Before Kael could ask another question, a frightened villager rushed into the square. “The animals have disappeared!” he shouted. “Even the birds have gone silent.” An unnatural stillness settled over the village. Soren turned to Kael. “The stone you found has disturbed something ancient. If we don’t discover why, the darkness will spread beyond these woods.” Though fear gripped him, Kael nodded. “I’ll go.” “You won’t be alone.” A young huntress stepped forward. She carried a curved bow across her back, her green cloak blending with the trees behind her. “My name is Lyra,” she said. “I know these woods better than anyone.” Together they crossed the old stone bridge and entered the forest. The deeper they walked, the stranger the woods became. The wind carried faint whispers—not words they could understand, but voices that seemed to call each traveler by name. Kael froze. “Did you hear that?” Lyra nodded grimly. “The forest feeds on memories. Don’t answer the voices.” Suddenly the trees began to shift. Paths twisted where none had existed before. Shadows stretched across the ground like living creatures. Then they found it. In the center of a forgotten clearing stood a massive stone arch covered in glowing symbols—the same symbols carved into Kael’s mysterious stone. As Kael stepped closer, the stone in his pocket began to shine with brilliant silver light. The arch rumbled. Cracks spread across its surface. From the darkness beyond the arch came a deep, echoing voice. “The Nameless One… has returned.” Kael’s heart pounded. He had never heard those words before. Yet somehow… they felt like the truth. The ground trembled beneath their feet as the ancient gateway slowly began to open.
