The start to a new.
“Lorelei you are going to be late!” My mother yelled from downstairs as I pushed myself out of bed for one last day of high school.
“Come on darling, before your mom gets mad” My father said as he opened my door.
“I’m coming, I'm coming” I groaned forcing my body to stand.
“You always make me late!” My mother hissed as I got downstairs.
“Don’t worry I’ll take her today, or she could just drive herself” My father laughed.
“She could, but then what would you do all day with no car” My mother hissed again.
“I’ll be fine, Take the car Lorelei” My father smiled and threw me the keys to his car. I was rarely allowed to drive but when I was it was always my father's car and never my mom's. Sometimes I think she secretly hates me. Last day of senior year, collage in the fall as well as some summer courses.
I got in the car and turned up the music, it’s not like I had many friends honestly. A few here and there but they only liked me for my money that wasn’t even mine. My dad owned a company although through my 18 years on this earth I never know what it is they do or sell. No one does, but none the less. Mom works a ‘normal job’ Which really means she goes out and does whatever she wants for work that day and then comes home at 5pm. Her version of the ‘normal job’ is working a 9-5, not sitting at a desk or ‘helping people’.
I pulled into the parking lot at school in my dad’s vintage black 1967 convertible Camaro. Guys stared; girls stared which was pretty normal when I drove his cars. Yes plural, cars. He has a lot of different cars, then again, he’s worth Millions. Top school for me and my brothers. Yes brothers. One couldn’t be bothered to look at me while we were at school or at home honestly. I’m not popular nor do I care to be. I have two best friends I know would never betray me and everyone else is just meh.
He seems to think that because he’s popular they like him for him when in all honestly everyone likes who he can take to the next football games, or who he likes to spend his time with, or who he invites to his parties at the beach house. Everyone has money but for some reason people want to be our friend because we have more.
“Lorelei!” I heard from behind me as I stepped out of the car.
“Yes?” I turned around confused
“What kind?” The man asked pointing to the car.
“1967 convertible Camaro.” I answered quickly
“Oh” he looked shocked.
“What?” I asked confused.
“Engine?” He asked
“V8” I answered again.
“You know your cars?” He asked.
“I’d like to say I know a bit about them.” I answered pulling my sunglasses off.
He looked at me like I just undressed in front of the entire school.
“Is there a problem?” I asked confused.
“N-no sorry” he strutted
“Okay is there something on my face or?” I asked confused
“No, I just know you usually don’t stop and talk to random men in the parking lot, and don’t take your sunglasses off until you get into the school” He answered
“Stalker much?” I asked concerned.
“Lori is there a problem?” My older brother Axeton came to ask. He’s the one that never talks to me so I found this strange.
“One, don’t call me that. Two, no everything is fine” I answered quickly.
“Dad let you barrow his car I see” he smirked.
“Yeah well, not everyone can be mommy’s favorite, and dad knows I love this car” I smirked and brushed it off.
“I didn’t get your name?” I asked confused.
“Oh, Jackson” He smiled and put his hand out for me to shake it
“Lorelei” I smiled and shook his hand.
“Lorelei, you don’t know who this guy is” Axeton said stepping between us.
“You never cared before brother, why now?” I asked confused.
“Just don’t get too close to people you don’t know, okay?” Axeton said irritated.
“Okay?” I said confused.
I started my school day like any other. We lived in LA, but my father did business all over the world. He was constantly traveling and my mom hated it, but she loved the expensive vacations he would take her on, speaking of they are going on one next weekend.
“Lorelei, party this weekend?” Ashley asked me as she walked past.
“Excuse me?” I asked confused.
“Are you coming to my party this weekend?” She giggled.
“Yeah, probably not” I scoffed.
“We will be there Ashley” My best friend Alex said as she wrapped her arm around me.
“Why?” I groaned as we walked away from her.
“Because, socialize Lolly” She smiled pushing me into my classroom.
“Hey it’s Lolo!” James yelled as I entered the room.
“Hey its Jay!” I said sarcastically back to him. Jay is James older brother and they seriously hated each other. He calls me Lolo which he knows I hate and I call him Jay because I know he hates it it’s a fun dynamic.
James is 5’11 with shaggy brown hair, tan skin and a Craggy face, he’s well-built and definitely cute but his personality sucks honestly. I turned him down last year when he asked me on a date and he’s been kind of a d**k since. Jay however is 6ft, with a high fade, slicked back, Chesnut hair well-built and looks great in anything. He’s also super sweet or was over summer vacay last year.
“Speaking of Jay, he coming home this summer?” I asked curiously.
“Maybe, maybe not” James said sarcastically.
“Well, it’s not like you don’t live right down the street from me” I smirked
“Gross, he has a girlfriend you know?” He asked dickishly
“Yeah, I’m aware” I laughed.
“So, you aren’t going to try to hook up with him?” James asked tauntingly.
“No James, I just happen to actually be friends with your brother” I smirked and turned my attention to the front as the teacher walked in. The day was fast, half day and all and pretty much all it was was to say goodbye and clean out our lockers, which we did last.
“So as our countdown to never seeing each other again, thankfully. I would just like to say I hope you all find your Romeo or Juillet!” Our drama teacher yelled.
“Hopefully none of us die in the end” A student said which made everyone laugh as the bell rang.
“Have a good summer and I hope I never have to see you again!” She yelled as everyone pilled out the doors.
“Lorelei, what are you doing behind?” She asked me with a smile.
“Hey, I really just wanted to thanks Mrs. Johnson, you helped me a lot this year” I smiled as I gave her a hug.
“Lorelei let's go!” Alex whined as Axeton entered the room.
“Lorelei, are you going home?” Axeton asked
“Yeah why?” I asked confused.
“I haven’t been able to get ahold of mom all day” Axeton said concerned.
“I’m sure she’s fine Axe” I smiled and patted him on the back.
“Anyways, thanks Mrs. Johnson! Have a good summer!” I yelled as I walked out the door.
“Lorelei, you should follow me home, just in case” Axeton said suspiciously.
“Axeton, out of the 4 years we have been in school together you haven’t said but 5 words to me, you’ve talked to me more today than you have in a while. What's going on?” I asked concerned.
“Alex meet Lorelei at the car, she’ll only be a second” Axeton demanded.
“it’s okay Alex go” I smiled and waved her off turning my attention back to Axeton.
“Lorelei there's something mom and dad want to tell you about tonight, but there’s also our grad party mom wanted it to be a surprise for you since you are leaving in a few weeks. I don’t know I just feel like somethings off” Axeton explained.
“Axeton I’m sure everything is going to be fine. I’ll follow you home though just in case, okay?” I smiled and he nodded and I headed to the car.
“Everything okay?” Alex asked
“Yeah, Axeton just thinks something bad is going to happen.” I laughed.
“Hey wait up!” Cory yelled as we got in the car.
“Party at Ashleys tomorrow!” Cory yelled as she climbed in the back seat.
“That’s tonight?” I groaned.
“Yeah, her parents are going out of town tomorrow.” She smirked
“Okay” I groaned again as I pulled out of the parking spot following Axeton home. We lived about 20 minutes away so it wasn’t hard to keep up with him. I jammed out to some music and turned it down when I got closer to the house, cause moms' kind of a d**k about stuff like that.
“Cory, remember not to flirt with my dad please” I scoffed as we pulled into the driveway.
“Hey, who’s car is that?” Alex asked concerned.
“I’m not sure” I said curiously as Axeton approached the car.
“Hey, I’m gunna go in first if I don’t come out in 5 minutes leave” Axeton said quickly. He looked anxious, his heart was pounding and it was like he couldn’t breathe. He walked in to the house and a few minutes later came back out with a smile on his face.
“it’s okay it's just Uncle Benny” Axeton laughed and waved us inside.
“Uncle Benny!” I yelled and jumped out of the car and ran inside.
“Benny!” I yelled as I jumped into him.
“Hey Lolli!” He yelled as he picked me up, gave me a hug and put me down.
Uncle Benny and I are really close as he spent a lot of time here while my parents were away. He found a wife and settled down close to us but hasn’t been around much honestly.
“Where’s Ellie?” I asked confused.
“She stayed home today, sorry Lolli” Benny said with a smile.
“It’s okay!” I smiled
“Hey darling” My dad said as he wrapped his arm around my shoulder and hugged me tightly.
“Hey dad” I smiled hugging him back.
“Alex, Cory” My dad said and tipped his nonexistent hat.
“Why Mr. Capria” Cory blushed and put her hand on her forehead dramatically. I knew she was going to do this just figured she’d dial it down not tone it up. I laughed as well as everyone else. No one can story Cory from being herself.
“So how was school?” Benny asked
“It was fine” I chuckled
“Axeton finally talking to you yet?” He asked and raised a brow at him.
“Today he said a lot, but it is the last day of school so” I joked.
“Axeton, you don’t talk to your sister in school?” My father asked appalled.
“Sometimes, but we don’t see each other that much” Axeton lied.
“It’s no big deal dad. We are just from two different worlds” I sighed and threw myself down on the couch.
“He’s your brother” My father said.
“Yeah, he’s also really annoying” I scoffed.
“Look schools over, no harm no foul” I chuckled.
“Anyways, I think I'll go shopping, is that okay?” I asked
“Of course” My father said and kissed the top of my head.
“Take my car again” He smiled while he sat down with Benny and Axeton.
“Will do” I smiled and walked out the front door.
We went to the mall and found a few things, nothing to exciting. We saw some people from school who made the same joke as always. ‘Hey didn’t I just vow to never seeing you again’ they laughed I laughed and we went our separate ways.
I felt a little off as the day went on, I figured I was hungry so we grabbed some food at the food court. Of course I bought stuff for Alex and Cory as well even though they protested. They hated it when I bought them stuff, they could buy it themselves and I knew that but they buy me stuff when I go out with them so I felt it was only fair.
After a few hours I headed home, dropping Alex and Cory off on the way. When I got home the lights were on but there was no movement. I went inside and looked around to see if I could find anyone. I called my dad and got no answer, same with my mom and Axeton. I heard a knock on the door and rushed over to it.
“Who is it?” I asked quickly standing behind the door.
“James” I heard a husky voice say from the other side.
“Oh hey” I smiled I answered the door.
“Hey, where are your parents?” James asked curiously
“I don’t know actually, no one seems to be home.” I smiled.
“Oh okay, mind if I wait for them?” He asked
“Of course not, make yourself at home. I was just about to grab a shower” I smiled and shut the door as he walked in. I went upstairs and got into the shower and finished it in about 30 minutes. I got dressed and put a little makeup on and headed back down the steps.
“There you are!” My mother gasped as I walked down the steps.
“Yeah, I had to shower” I laughed.
“It’s not funny Lorelei. We came home and no one was here!” She yelled.
“I left James on the couch when I got in the shower, all the lights were on when I got home earlier” I said confused.
“We turned everything off when we left” Axeton said coming around the corner.
“And yeah, James is still on the couch” Axeton smirked.
“Okay?” I asked confused.
“Anyways, forget it. The party is about to start” My mother scoffed throwing a tantrum.
“What’s her problem?” I asked confused
“She thought you were going to be late” Axeton scoffed.
“Hey where’s Jake and Jayce?” I asked confused.
“A friend's house” Axeton smirked.
“Oh okay” I shrugged and walked to the living room.
“You’re back!” James laughed as I walked in.
“Yeah, sorry I didn’t think I was long” I smiled
“It’s okay, anyways I didn’t want to leave without saying goodbye, I’ll see you soon okay Lola” He smirked and walked out the door.
“That was weird” I said confused and shrugged it off to.
The rest of the night went by fast and I really didn’t spend much time with anyone, the party was classy and elegant and if one thing went a little sideways, I got the blame. I was forced to wear a white dress with floral print as well as any of the other girls who also graduated in my class, Axeton was forced to wear a suit, as the rest of the boys did as well. Some comments were made here and there but nothing I really bothered to hear or answer honestly. By the time the party was over I was ready for bed, I started heading up the steps when I was stopped in my tracks.
“Where do you think you are going?” My mom hissed.
“To bed?” I asked confused
“I don’t think so, someone has to clean up this mess, and I'm not doing it” She hissed again and walked upstairs. I sat down for a second and left out a sigh, I went upstairs and put my comfiest clothes on and headed back down to clean. Sometimes I really do think she hates me, Axeton went to bed an hour ago but she made me stay up and told me ‘It wasn’t ladylike to go to bed when there was a party hosted for you.’
I started cleaning, picking up the trash, putting the leftover food away, cleaning the floors.
“Darling why are you still awake?” My father asked me as he entered the kitchen.
“Oh, someone had to clean up this mess” I left out a small chuckle trying to play it off.
“Where’s your mom?” He asked confused.
“In bed” I answered lowly.
“Go to bed, Uncle Benny and I will finish cleaning” he said with a smile.
“No, it's okay dad, I got it” I smiled.
“I wasn’t asking Lorelei” My dad demanded. Never once had he demanded me to go to bed, he’s caught me cleaning up from parties before and has even helped even when mom told him to come to bed. But I did as he asked and went to my room. I got in the shower on the hottest setting it had and just relaxed, after a little while I got out and went straight to bed. Tomorrow was the first day of summer, well technically it was today since it was past midnight. I’m going to sleep in like it’s no one's business.
At some point I fell asleep because I woke up to banging on my door.
“What?” I yelled as I flung my door open.
“Why was your father cleaning last night and not you? It was your party!” My mom yelled.
“It was a party for Axeton and I, but Axeton went to bed before it was even over” I said quickly getting a dirty look in return.
“You are so ungrateful! I throw a party for you and you can’t even be bothered to clean it up!” She hissed.
“What’s going on here?” My father asked walking towards us.
“I was just telling Lorelei how rude it was to leave you clean up the mess from her party” My mother said lowly.
“Rude? No what was rude was Axeton not having to help. It was their party and Axeton had more to do with it then she did.” My father hissed.
“That’s not true!” My mother scoffed.
“Crissy I'm not doing this with you. I told Lorelei to go to bed” My father scoffed and walked away my mother following close behind.
“What was that about?” Axeton asked coming out of his room.
“Go ask your mom” I scoffed and slammed my door closed. I hopped back in bed ignoring any sign of life from the outside world. Sometimes I can’t help but think about what it would be like if I wasn’t born into this family, how much easier my life could be. Don’t get me wrong I love my dad and my brothers, yes even Axeton but my mom always treats me like I'm nothing to her. Axeton and I are twins, given we were born on the same day but we look nothing alike or act nothing alike. Nothing we have ever done together has been of our own will. We have the same birthday so the same parties, expect for the sweet 16, My dad made sure I got that one all to myself.
The day went by in a blur and I honestly couldn’t remember much. I slept most of it and didn’t leave my room at all. When I wasn’t asleep, I went to the bathroom and that was pretty much it. For some reason today felt worse then the rest, my heart weighed heavy in my chest. Like something was coming, maybe Axeton was right to be concerned.
“Lorelei?” Axeton opened the door.
“Yeah?” I said not even looking up from my phone
“You okay?” He asked concerned
“Yeah” I answered still not paying attention to him.
“Listen I’m sorry, I didn’t know mom had you clean up after the party.” He explained.
“Axeton, can I ask you a question?” I said sitting up in my bed.
“Yeah of course” Axeton said sitting on my bed.
“Have you ever realized that every party, every gathering, every shindig, every special occasion, are all mostly for you?” I asked irritated.
“No, I never really thought about it.” He answered honestly.
“Axeton, everything is about you. I was the one mom didn’t want, when we have parties anything that includes a large group of people by the end of the night, I'm always left to clean up everything.” I sighed.
“Why didn’t you say anything?” He asked concerned.
“Because Axeton, we don’t get along like ever. Literally it took you almost 4 years to say more then 4 words to me at school. Sometimes you treat me like a normal brother does and other times I'm to ‘lame’ or ‘stupid’ for you to be seen around” I answered honestly.
“Lorelei, you know I love you though, right?” He asked with sad eyes.
“I think in your own way, yes. But in the way you should love your sister and stand up for her? No Axeton I don’t” I sighed again. What did he want me to say? Yes Axe, I know you love me even when you don’t show it or when I feel all alone about stuff, I can’t even talk to you about because you are too busy being popular to notice?
“Lorelei I'm sorry I made you feel like I don’t love you. You are my little sister of course I do. And I've always looked out for you but you handle a lot on your own, I honestly didn’t think you needed me.” He answered sincerely.
"I can, but when it came to rumors, or boys calling me names, or girls saying things about me? That’s when I needed you Axe, when I wouldn’t leave my room all weekend and you were out partying till God knows when? That’s when I needed you Axe. But I was the one no one wanted, but dad. He is the only one who makes me feel normal and sometimes I wish I wasn’t even a part of this family. Everyone says it's better to be ignored but honestly it hurts when it’s your own blood. I can deal with people at school but we used to be inseparable. Now you can’t even look me in the eyes in public. People barley even know we are related Axeton.” I chuckled. Realizing I sound like a crazy person for being so upset over something so little.
“Lorelei, I’m sorry.” Axeton said lowly, I watched his eyes get watery but I didn’t care. I spent countless nights crying over how I was treated the last few years. Remembering a time Axeton and I were actually close seems like a distant memory, if we didn’t live in the same house, I would never see him at all. I couldn’t tell him it was okay or that it would be okay because I know he loves me now that he explained it. Honestly, I just wanted to go back to sleep. ‘I’m sorry’ was all he could say? That doesn’t help when I'm scarred from my past living in this house.
“Please go, I need to get ready for Ashleys party” I said lowly as I walked to my bathroom and closed the door.
I sat on the floor for a few minutes feeling sorry for myself. I felt a few tears escape my eyes as I sat with my head on my knees, why did the bug me like at all? I’ve haven’t cried over this in 2 years. I accepted the way I was treated. How unwanted I was, it wasn’t such a big deal as the years went on but when Axeton decided I wasn’t good enough that’s when it hurt. He was my brother, by 2 minutes my older brother. I scoffed to myself thinking that anything would ever change when I was younger, I lifted myself off the floor and got in the shower, I scrubbed myself trying to get rid of the negative energy not like it worked but I tried to convince myself it did when my skin was red and hurt to the touch of anything. I got dressed in my nicest dress and put on some heavier makeup, and colorful eye shadow. I sat in my room for a few minutes and when Alex told me she was almost here I made my way downstairs.
