Chapter Twenty
On Thursday morning, I got up early and slipped out of our room without waking Liz. On my way to the front door, I noticed something on the bulletin board—a new Merit List. I looked closer and saw my name at the top of the list of six people; I had five merits!
Where did those come from?
I remembered only the one Mrs. Morton gave me.
How did I get five merits?
In the lower right corner of the sheet of paper was a horse head someone had sketched there.
I hope Pepper doesn’t catch them doing that.
Fuse was already on the tennis court when I got there. A thin fog defused the light, and the courts were wet with dew, but we wanted to get in some practice before the others came out.
Fuse bounced the ball with his racquet.
