Prologue
Being happy to wake up alive at your best friend's house should be normal, right?
Wrong.
It should be expected.
But then again my best friend was not who I thought she was when the week had started.
Let me take you back to the beginning of the week my life turned upside down.
Monday morning
I woke up late, my alarm hadn't gone off and my dad was already at work while my mom had left with the twins to drop them off at school on her way to work.
I rushed through my morning routine brushing my teeth and throwing on some clean jeans and a hoodie. My hair decided not to cooperate as I tried to run my brush through the curly mass of dark brown hair. Knowing id be even later if I spent any more time on it I wrapped it in a messy bun and ran out the door.
The school was only a few blocks away and I usually rode with Kennedy my bestie but today she had early cheer practice for the game tonight and I clearly didn't do well with early.
It had stormed last night and I skipped around puddles as I ran trying to submerge myself in the dingy water. Right when the school came into view I missed a puddle landing both feet ankle-deep in the murky water. Lucky me. The jeans I'm wearing were already too long for me and the frayed ends were often under the back of my Converse, now I looked like a wet dog to match with the fabric soaked. Approaching the building I leaned down to wring out the bottoms of my pants making a new puddle of my own at the door. My socks felt uncomfortable and I knew my feet would look prunish by the end of the first period. I would have to wait to change them until I could make time to go to my locker. The first bell rang as I opened the door.
The squelch of my shoes against the tile floor drew a lot of attention as I ran down the overly crowded hallway. I knew the school grounds like the back of my hand, I was in my junior year after all.
Turning the corner I slammed into a hard wall of muscle and bounced backward headed for the cool tile.
Strong arms shot out as the familiar smell hit me. I had ran into Chad. Not only was he the school's star football player but he was my biggest crush and also one of my best friends.
He kept me from falling. I shrugged my backpack up on my shoulders adjusting my textbooks in my arms.
Slowly I looked up at him. His lopsided grin and mischievous eyes twinkled. My heart picked up its pace in conjunction. We were so close I could feel his breath fanning my face.
“Woah Phebs, where’s the fire?” He joked.
“No fire,” I blushed “just me running late as usual.”
“Ah, the great Phoebe always the last to arrive,” his melodious chuckle filled my ears and I could feel the sound shaking from his chest with him still being so close. “Good thing I was here to catch you,” he winked.
“Yes, good thing, if not for you the floor and I would be very close right now.”
“Well, I’m actually glad you ran into me because I was looking for you.”
“Really,” I ticked my brow up confusion evident in my features, “you were looking for me?”
We were friends, sure, but we rarely hung out alone.
“Yeah, duh, you’re one of my best friends but I was hoping I could ask you something,” Chad replied tapping my forehead with his index finger. “Did you hit your head?” He asked.
“No, was that your question?”
“No,” he said shaking his head.
“Can it wait then? I need to get to class.”
“We have the same class Phoebe can I ask you while we walk there?”
“Sure.”
As Chad and I walked down the hall, I could feel his arm brushing against my shoulder. He was easily a foot taller than me.
I didn’t know what he was about to ask me, but I was nervous typically we were not alone a lot, Kennedy was always there. We were like the three amigos, the three musketeers.
That didn’t stop me from having a crush on Chad for as long as I could remember. I was sure that he would never feel the same though, so I kept it to myself to not mess up our friendship.
“So, Phebs, I was wondering if you maybe wanted to go see a movie with me on Friday night?” Chad asked breaking me from my thoughts.
Oh my god did he really just ask me that? Wait, no, it’s got to be as friends right? He couldn’t possibly be asking me on a date. He must’ve already confirmed with Kennedy. Come on Phoebe say something.
“Sure, it’ll be you, me, and Kennedy, right? I said, hoping to not embarrass myself further.
“Erm, well no, I was hoping it could just be the two of us.”
“Oh yeah, I can go to the movies with you on Friday.”
Real smooth, Phoebe you said it like you didn’t even want to go I scold myself as we walk into our math class.
And, if that wasn’t embarrassing enough, I tripped over a backpack as I walked down the aisle to my desk causing me to drop all my books on the floor and smack my knees on the hard tile.
The class burst out laughing and my face turned beet red. My hand shot out trying to scrounge for my glasses.
Two hands neared my face and my glasses were placed on me. Chad looked down at me with his lopsided grin extending his hand.
“We’re going to have to bubble wrap you, aren’t we?” He joked.
I slapped his hand away picking up my things and finding my desk.
“Alright class quiet down,” Mr. Finch said.
