Chapter 1 Gates of Gold
“Finally!!” I yelled as I rushed to the bathroom to freshen up, my voice shaking with excitement. “Guess who’s a live in housemaid now? Girl, I got hired!” I screamed it out, joy spilling over . “Get off the bathtub right now , girl,” Lilian called from the room, already packing out her bags. “We have a lot to arrange before you leave!” I stepped out with a towel drying my hair . I looked at Lilian, my homegirl since childhood, the one who’d opened her door and let me stay these past few months after I got out of prison. “Thank you, Lilian,” I said quietly. “For real, thank you for accommodating me. I don’t know what I would’ve done without you.” Lilian waved me off, but her eyes went soft. “Girl, stop that, that’s what we do for each other . Now Hurry up, St. George’s Hills isn’t gonna wait.” We moved fast, packing my few necessities into my carry bag. Minutes later, I hugged Lilian tightly, my hands trembling a little, and dashed out the door . The bus pulled up. I climbed in with my bag clutched to my chest and slid into a window seat. My stomach flipped. As the bus jerked forward and pulled away, I watched Lilian and the house get smaller behind me. New job. New people. New rules. I swallowed hard, took a deep breath, and whispered to myself, "You can do this, Lucy.” An hour later , the bus hissed to a stop. I came down, adjusting the strap of my bag. The air here was different, quieter , cleaner , with trimmed hedges lining the street. I followed the directions, then started walking. A few miles in, my bag grew heavier with each step, bbut I kept my eyes on the tall gates ahead. My heart pounded. This was it. My new start. On reaching the crafted gate of St. George’s Hill, it opened without a sound. I adjusted the strap of my canvas bag, my forehead wrinkled in concentration. The rain in Weybridge was different from the rain that had beaten against the high concrete walls of HM Prison Holloway for ten long years. Here, it smelled of crushed pine trees, flowers, and expensive fertilizer . It tasted clean, almost sweet, but as I walked through the open barrier onto the private estate, the cold sprayed straight through the soles of my worn leather shoes, giving me sharp shivers as I walked with my head slightly bowed. “Rain, please not today,” I murmured. At twenty seven, my body carried the crushing weight of a shattered life. To me, life was really selective on whom to be fair to firstly, the horrific assault on my elder sister which left her broken and traumatized in rehabilitation; the tragedy of my parents' fatal car crash; moving through different foster homes; and finally, the ten dark years ripped away from me in a cold prison cell for mistakenly killing a r****t out of self defense. I had walked out of prison into a world that had moved on without me. No family, nor a home to return to. Just a release file, a tiny penny that couldn ’ t even cover a week of groceries, and an overwhelming, constant terror of slipping back into the dark. This job wasn't just employment. It was a miraculous lifeline, a second chance at life I had prayed for every single night on a thin prison mattress. The driveway curved around a thick patch of trees, revealing the house a perfect definition of classic luxury.“Wow , look at that,” I murmured, my eyes wide as I approached closer . It was breathtaking. The architecture was classic Georgian: soaring limestone pillars, floor to ceiling sash windows framed by dark green shutters, and a manicured lawn so pristine it looked painted onto the earth. A sweeping double staircase led up to a pair of massive, dark oak double doors adorned with polished brass lion head knockers. It felt like a sanctuary, a place where peace might finally be possible. I stopped at the foot of the stone steps, taking a slow , shaky breath. I reached up, blowing off strands of my dark hair from my face, smoothing down my simple black skirt and high necked gray blouse. I checked my hands. My fingernails were short, clean, and trimmed to the quick. “Perfect,” I nervously said as I climbed the steps and pressed the golden button beside the door . A soft chime echoed deep within the house. Three seconds passed. Then four . The heavy oak door swung inward. "You must be Lucy." The woman standing in the grand foyer looked like a painting brought to life. Mrs. Sophia Williams was effortlessly stunning. Her golden brown hair was swept back into an elegant chignon, and she wore a soft ivory silk blouse tucked into tailored trousers. Her face glowed with a genuine, gentle welcome that instantly filled the cold entryway. "Good afternoon, ma'am," I said softly, keeping my voice light and respectful. I dipped my head slightly. "Lucy Harrison, I’m here for the live-in housekeeper position." "Oh, please, drop the ma'am, Lucy," Sophia said with a light, melodious laugh that bounced off the high ceilings. She stepped aside, holding the door open wider . "Come in, come out of that dreadful rain. Give me your coat." "I can take care of it myself, ma'am Mrs. Williams," I corrected quickly, offering a small, genuinely nervous smile as I stepped over the threshold. The warmth inside the house hit me instantly, smelling of fresh lilies, beeswax, and rich spices. The foyer was vast, dominated by a floating marble staircase that curved gracefully to the upper floor . A crystal chandelier cast warm, golden light across every surface. "We are so glad you came," Sophia said, closing the heavy door . She turned, her eyes sweeping over me with deep empathy. "When I came across your application, well, I knew you were the right person. I believe in fresh starts, Lucy. Everyone deserves a place where they can rebuild." I was so grateful, my throat tightened up. My eyes filled with joyous tears, which I quickly blinked away. "Thank you, Mrs. Williams. You don't know what this job truly means to me. I will work as hard as I can." "I know you will," Sophia murmured softly, giving me a warm, reassuring smile. "Come, let me show you around before dinner ." I followed two steps behind as Sophia led me through the house. Every room was a masterpiece of refined taste: plush velvet sofas, floor to ceiling art, and dining tables polished to a mirror shine. "Your duties will be straightforward," Sophia explained smoothly."The heavy cleaning crew comes every Thursday morning. Your primary focus will be daily maintenance: keeping the living areas spotless, handling breakfast prep, and managing the laundry." Sophia stopped outside a set of frosted glass double doors at the end of the east wing. "This is my husband’s private study," Sophia said, her voice dropping into a tone of gentle affection. "Mr . Williams works very long hours. He oversees real estate and investments across the country, so when he is home, he requires peace. You are only to enter this room between ten and eleven in the morning to dust, and only when the door is unlocked. If it is locked," Sophia turned to look at me, her eyes warm and clear , "you never knock. You simply walk away." "I understand completely, Mrs. Williams." "He is a very gentle, kind man, Lucy," Sophia added, beaming proudly. "Truly, the most generous soul I have ever known. But his work carries tremendous pressure." "I will respect his privacy entirely."Sophia patted my forearm affectionately. "Good. Now , let ’ s get you settled into your room downstairs before dinner . Bryan should be home from the city shortly." I picked up my canvas bag and followed Sophia down to the staff quarters in the lower west wing. The room assigned to me was small but beautiful: a clean single bed with crisp linens, a dark wood wardrobe, and a private shower . It was warmer and softer than anything I had slept on in ten years. "Get unpacked and rest," Sophia said warmly from the doorway. "Dinner is at seven. We insist you join us at the table for your first evening. We consider our staff family here." "Thank you, Mrs. Williams," I said, holding my hands together , my voice trembling slightly with genuine emotion. "Thank you so much." When the door closed and Sophia’s footsteps faded up the stairs, I stood frozen in the center of the quiet room. Slowly, I sat down on the edge of the soft bed. I buried my face in my hands, letting out a long, shuddering breath. For ten years, I had known only concrete, noise, violence, and shame. But here, in this quiet, golden mansion, I had been met with nothing but dignity, gentleness, and respect. I looked up at the ceiling, a small, hopeful smile touching my lips for the first time in a decade. “A real chance,” I thought to myself. “I can finally rebuild my life.” “Let me get some rest,” I uttered as I lay down. A loud, smooth chime echoed from the main floor above the front doors opening. A deep, warm male voice carried faintly down the hallway, followed by Sophia’s happy laugh. Bryan Williams had arrived home. I stood up, smoothed down my skirt, and prepared to meet the generous billionaire who had given me a second chance at life.
