Chapter 1
Ten minutes ago, a report was received on Changyan Street on the east side of the City Hall. After Lorna received the news, she rushed over quickly.
The street lies at the heart of the imperial capital, dangerously close to the University of Science and Technology—an institution under the Paola royal family's purview. Should unrest spill onto campus, it could provoke the Paola royal family's displeasure.
Today, the birth of constitutional monarchy has greatly reduced the influence of the royal family, but the royal family still enjoys extremely high prestige, status and wealth. The noble bloodline brings strong support, making the Paola royal family still firmly at the top of the social pyramid.
The University of Science and Technology enrolls the empire's top talents. Everyone who comes in and out of here has an extraordinary demeanor. Even the guards at the school gate have a condescending sense of superiority. When they speak to Lorna, there is a sense of pickyness in their tone.
"We received an alarm. There is a fight about 30 meters around the corner. As you know, this is the University of Science and Technology," the guard said with a bit of pride. "We can't let the disturbance affect us here, otherwise the city government will receive a complaint from the school."
She doubted whether this woman could solve this problem. Lorna was wearing a patrol guard uniform that didn't fit her well. She was very thin and pale. Her long, thick bangs half blocked her eyes. She sounded frail when she spoke. From her appearance, she had nothing to do with the job of a guard.
There are also female staff members throughout the Imperial Guard system, but most of the women who enter the system do clerical work that has nothing to do with patrolling and resolving disputes.
A few women with noble blood and outstanding skills will be selected by their superiors while they are in school, trained, and enter special departments to work.
There are women among the patrol guards, and they are as strong and tough as men. The school guards really don't understand why the security department would recruit such a weak-looking woman this time.
"I see."
Lorna could see the displeasure in the middle-aged guard's eyes, and she moved her lips and whispered, "We won't let the riot affect this place."
She assured that this job was hard-earned, and she had fought for it for a long time.
The patrol guard job has nothing to do with what she studied. She just graduated this year and studied hard and achieved excellent results while in school, but all this did not help her much in finding a job.
Although the times were developing rapidly, her father's criminal record, which became a stain on her file, made her destined to have no chance of working in the safe and comfortable municipal department, due to her low birth and ordinary bloodline.
Her mother is an alcoholic and the family is in huge debt. She urgently needs a job to support herself. The patrol guard profession is always short of labor due to long working hours, low pay, and certain risks, so the conditions for recruiting are inevitably relaxed. This is the only way for her to avoid being rejected from the job because of her father's record.
After much effort, she was granted a two-month probation period, but the people in the guard team were quite dissatisfied with her. The captain once warned her that if she failed to complete the work and received complaints, she might be asked to leave the team.
"I'll solve the problem as soon as possible."
She raised her head and spoke in a very soft tone, but with a firmness that was hard to ignore.
She has no way out, she has to solve this trouble no matter what!
The sun was blocked by layers of dark clouds, and there was a feeling that a storm was about to come. The building in front of the science and technology university owned by the Paola royal family towered into the clouds, making Lorna look small and ordinary.
When she turned around and rushed to the scene of the riot, she brushed past many talented students entering the campus. She was like an ant and was not conspicuous.
When she was young, she had dreamed of entering the empire's top university and becoming a talent that various industries urgently needed to recruit after graduation.
Unfortunately, some things cannot be achieved through hard work, and the door here will not be open to her.
Lorna ran very fast. The words of the campus security guard were like a wake-up call. It only took her a few minutes to reach the scene of the commotion.
Changyan Street is located in the hub area where the east and west of the center of the imperial capital meet. The westernmost side of the city is a chaotic area, known as the "notorious for slums", famous for being dirty, messy and poor. Various forces are entangled, and crimes often occur. Sometimes, even if the police are called, the guards may not be willing to come.
Normally, each g**g is aware of the official attitude and will not cause trouble beyond their own territory, let alone approach Changyan Street. After all, there is a university of science and technology here, and people in the empire tacitly regard this place as the Paola royal family's territory.
No one wants to cause trouble here and get into trouble.
A group of hooligans gathered here today. They looked young and had a feeling of being new and ignorant of the world.
Lorna's heart sank. If the people who gathered to cause trouble today were a group of adults, and she used the name of the Paola royal family to intimidate them, these people might be afraid of the Paola royal family and leave quickly.
But if these troublemakers are young and naive teenagers, there might be some trouble.
"Disperse, disperse!" There were about a dozen people gathered here. Lorna raised her voice and shouted, "No trouble is allowed here. Please leave immediately!"
The boys were attracted by her words and turned their heads subconsciously.
Everyone here was stronger than she. She was wearing a guard uniform, which made her look ridiculous in the eyes of this group of lawless teenagers. They were stunned for a moment and couldn't help but sneer:
"Get lost!" a young man with a fierce expression warned, "Don't meddle in other people's business!"
"This is Changyan Street, next to it is the Paola royal family's University of Science and Technology..."
The boys gathered around her, and she tried to straighten her back, like a rabbit that had strayed into the jungle.
Because of the commotion, several cars in the distance were stopped.
In a black car in the middle, a young man glanced out of the window casually and saw the girl surrounded by a group of fierce teenagers. The next moment, she looked like she was about to be torn to pieces.
He should have looked away calmly, but from the girl's uniform and the situation before him, he could guess what was going on.
If nothing unexpected happens, b****y conflict is inevitable.
He was not very curious, nor was he the type to meddle in other people's business. He could see that Lorna was obviously afraid, but her actions were the exact opposite of her fear.
The woman sitting opposite him in the car noticed his gaze, followed his line of sight and noticed the scene, stretching her arms lazily.
This girl is finished!
She was certain of this in her heart, but the next moment she heard the young man say, "Ranger, go and solve the problem."
A respectful response came from the front seat, the door was opened, and the woman sitting opposite the young man frowned slightly.
Her previous judgment was wrong. She saw the teenagers who were gathering to cause trouble fleeing in all directions under the strong intervention of the cavalry. Lorna, who was wearing a loose police uniform, had a pale face. With a sense of relief for surviving the disaster, she retracted her gaze and glanced at the young man next to her. When she lowered her eyelids, her eyes turned cold.
Lorna almost had an accident on her first day at work, but fortunately the matter was resolved satisfactorily. She was worried all day but did not receive any complaints.
She spent the day in anxiety, and only breathed a sigh of relief when she got off work.
When she got home, it was already dark and the weather was extremely hot and humid. The weather forecast said there would be thunderstorms today, so she had to get home before it rained. She had no money, and getting sick after being caught in the rain would be a huge burden for her.
There are still two alleys away from her home. The west of the city is very dangerous after nightfall. She quickened her pace. The sound of thunder rang out in the air, and the sound became louder and louder. The rainstorm was coming!
There was a loud 'boom' of thunder, and a flash of lightning streaked across the sky, illuminating the dark alley. Raindrops as big as beans fell down, and before Lorna could raise his hands to block his head, she saw a figure in a raincoat walking towards him in the rain, braving the lightning and thunder.
At this time and in this place, seeing someone dressed like this was not a good thing. She instinctively lowered her head. The wind and rain blew on her body, and Lorna instinctively shivered.
There was a chilling chill about him that made her feel creepy, mixed with a slightly sweet and fishy smell, like blood.
Lorna's whole body tensed up as the man got closer and closer. His tall stature made it seem like Lorna had nowhere to hide in this narrow alley.
A person who can walk this road alone at night is not someone to be trifled with. She tried to shrink her shoulders as much as possible, trying to lower her presence. The man was getting closer and closer, about to pass by her. She hadn't loosened her clenched fists yet, and the next second she felt the man raise his arm. Lorna seemed to be entangled by a giant python around the neck. She reached out to grab the hand, but the man held a dagger and stabbed her throat.
She was like a grasshopper without any resistance, her fingertips only touched the man's slender fingers. 'His' hands were soaked by the rain and were so cold that they seemed to have no temperature at all.
The powerful thumb that was holding down the dagger seemed to have a bulge. Before she could figure out what was going on, the man twisted the dagger, obviously trying to kill her.
The man seemed to be very confident in himself. After a successful attack, she withdrew and walked away. Blood gushed out from the wound in his throat and was quickly washed away by the rain.
Lorna's body fell to the ground and twitched. A fierce thunder and lightning struck down. She saw the man's back. A corner of his raincoat was lifted up. The man left humming a little tune. From the sound of his voice, she was a young man about thirty years old.
Who was this person and why did he want to kill her? Many questions made her eyes widen.
Due to the loss of so much blood, her pupils have begun to dilate. Is she going to die?
This thought flashed through her mind, and then another thought exploded in her mind: "Should I enter God's trial?"
