Chapter Two
It took a moment for Valtina’s eyes to adjust to the darkness of the room. Before she could see, she sensed that Claire and Henry were both awake, and both pretending not to be. She’d practiced her new abilities while waiting for this assignment... she entered Claire’s mind first. As Valtina had expected, the woman’s mind was mostly occupied with thoughts of her son. “Is he sleeping? Is he breathing? Maybe tomorrow he’ll take his first steps!” It wasn’t until Valtina reached the back of Claire’s mind that she found thoughts of Henry. “I wonder if he’s having a hard time at work. I wonder if he’s jealous of the baby... the magazines said that could happen. Oh! The baby! Maybe he’ll take his first steps tomorrow!”
