CHAPTER ONE
IRIS
Looking out the window, I couldn’t help but feel sick to my stomach. This was the one place I didn’t want to be. It brought back bad memories — memories buried so deep I had almost forgotten them, until I was back here.
I didn’t like being here. I didn’t want to be here. But I had no choice. Things weren’t going according to plan.
I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn’t even realize when we landed. Edward tapped my shoulder.
“We’ve arrived,” he said.
I got off the plane and mumbled an apology, but I didn’t want to move. Edward had to talk me into it. In the end, he dragged me inside.
I came in and sat for a very long time that day before finally going to my room. The house was gorgeous — a twenty-room mansion, all suites. My room had a king-size bed. The kitchen was magnificent. The sitting room was gorgeous. But none of it mattered. I didn’t like this house. There was one place I hated… this place.
“It’s not that bad,” Edward said from behind me.
I didn’t turn around. “That’s because you don’t hate it here.”
“I spent years trying to run away from here,” I said quietly. “But here I am, back again in the one place I never wanted to be, so forgive me for being a tad bit morbid.”
“With time you’ll feel at home,” he said.
“This place will never be my home,” I told him, my voice flat. “Never.”
“Fine,” Edward sighed. “But it’ll at least be tolerable. Plus, you said you wanted to work at the hospital.”
“I do.”
“Then you can start on Monday. Use this weekend to relax, calm down, and get used to the city again. New York is very gorgeous. You just have to look in the right places.”
“Mhm. I know that.”
There was a pause. Then he said, softer now, “ You do know I love you, right?”
“Of course I do,” I said.
“I love you as much as you love me.” I added
“Good,” he said. “I just want you to know that everything is going to be alright.”
“Sure,” I replied.
After I finished packing, I grabbed my car keys and drove out. There was one place in this city I loved more than anything. It made me feel tolerable. It was a high-end bar, exclusive. It was called Queens. A very good friend of mine owned it — André.
I first met André when I got back to the city after being away. He was like a ray of light. I didn’t have Edward here with me then, but he showed me the best spots. He made me laugh. I invested in his bar. He was actually the reason I stayed here a while.
As I walked in, I looked around. The place had changed so much since the last time I was here. I walked up to the bar and sat down. He hadn’t noticed me yet. I tapped the bar to order, and he turned. Then he gasped.
“Món chéri!”
“Andre, you look gorgeous as always,” I said.
“Of course I do. I’m always gorgeous,” he said.
“With you, you look magnificent,” he told me.
I laughed. “How’s the bar?”
“Good, as you can see. Business is booming. five years, and it’s all thanks to you.”
“Well, I can’t take all the credit. All I did was to invest money. You’re the one who made it work.”
“Yes, but without your capital, my changes wouldn't have been effective, you made my dreams come through.”
“Well then, I guess you owe me a drink.”
“I owe you several drinks.”
“Món chéri, how are you doing?” he asked.
“I’m fine. I’m back in the city. I’m starting work at the hospital next month, on Monday.”
“It seems I’ll be seeing a lot of you.”
“Yes, it seems so. You look happy.
"I am happy"
"How's Alex"
"He is good, we got engaged"
“Congratulations!!!!. Oh, I’m so happy for you,” I told him.
“So am I.”
We sat there chatting about nonsense, nonsense, well into the night. Then he asked me to sing a song. I didn’t want to. I didn’t hate singing. I was just tired. But he was persistent so I did. I sang a song and felt happy. The whole night was magnificent. Well, that was until all hell broke loose.
When I say all hell broke loose, I mean it literally. A couple of drunk guys were fighting. People were getting hurt. It was bloody chaos.
Next thing I knew, before I could blink, the police had raided the place. They claimed drugs were found in the establishment. I know André doesn’t do drugs, which means someone must have brought them in. And just like that, we were all packed off to the police station.
I mean, what the hell. And to make matters worse, apparently a judge had been going to different bars and night clubs trying to find out who was spreading drugs in the city and she just happened to be at Queen's when the fight happened and she called the police. Most of us were cleared and allowed to go home, I said goodbye to André and took a cab home.
Monday morning I woke up exhausted and upset. I didn’t want to go to work, but I had to. I took a shower, got dressed in something simple — a blue jean, a purple crop top, and some Converse. I grabbed my bag, my coat, my car keys and drove to the hospital.
I was standing Infront of the hospital it was actually one of my favourite places to be. The hospital was named after one of the people I loved more than my life, it was a tribute to her. It was called Sántá Rósa hospital.
I walked into reception and the ER was in chaos. An accident had just occurred. Bodies were piling up. I told the receptionist I was here to see the director who by the way was Edward
While I was there, paramedics came busting through the door, with a little boy not more than five years old but the doctors were too busy to even check him out. I noticed he was having trouble breathing so I gloved up, found a pair of stethoscope and listened to his lungs, I could hear air meaning he had a tension pneumothorax
So I stepped in and performed a thoracostomy, as I was done and about to insert a chest tube someone pulled me away from the patient
“What the hell are you doing?. The doctor who pulled me away said.
“ What does it look like I am doing. I’m trying to save your patient,” I said.
“You don't have jurisdiction here.” he said
"your patient has a tension pneumothorax, his lungs would have collapsed if I had not interved"
"Well thank you but you are not a doctor, and even if you were one you are not employed here so you have no right to touch him or any other patient in this hospital".
While we were arguing Edward came right there and asked
" What is going on"
"This woman here performed a thoracostomy on a patient when she doesn't have jurisdiction"
"She has every right to" Edward said
"Am sorry, what"
"She came earlier than I expected, this is Dr. Eriene Boúgour, she is the new chief of surgery. I would have introduced you to her at the board meeting" Edward said
"Iris, this is Dr. Conrad Réyes, he is the chief of trauma surgery here"
"Nice to meet you" I said
" Nice to meet you. sorry for the misunderstanding Dr. Eriene"
"It's fine call me Iris"
"then you can call me Conrad"
The misunderstanding was resolved there and then and Edward took me round to introduce me to the rest of the staff
