It had been a couple of days since I woke up. Camilla had been by my side the entire time. She was sweet and smart. She had found her mate a few years back and they had a little girl who was now 3.
She spoke of her mate with such love that it made my heart hurt knowing I would never have a mate love me the way she does. It turned out Beta Brett was her mate and had not told her I was there or that I was Jayson’s mate.
It wasn’t until I almost died with the silver ring that she found out about me. She says Jayson went crazy and began to panic and Brett had to call her to the pack house. Needless to say, Brett is in the dog house, she tells me. She kept apologizing for Jayson and kept saying he had never been the same since his mother was killed. Over and over she said how sorry he was for hurting me. It finally became too much.
“I’m sure he was only upset because I would make him weak if I died. At least until he marks Milly.” I say not meaning for it to sound as bitter as it came out.
“Oh Jaclyn! He cares, he really does, he is just…… damaged. He just needs you to be patient with him.” She says
A bitter laugh leaves my lips “For how long? Till he kills me? Maybe I should be happy he has mated with another wolf but hasn’t marked her yet?”
Camilla looks down and I can tell that she doesn’t know what to say.
“I am sorry Camilla. I shouldn’t take my hurt out on you.” I reached out and wrapped my arms around her to comfort her.
She responded to my hug and we remained in a comfortable silence for a long time. Until somebody cleared their throat from the door.
We looked up to see Jayson leaning against the door. “Camilla, I need you in my office.” He then looked at me with sadness in his eyes as I looked at him with hate. He quickly turned and headed towards his office.
Camilla got up to leave. “How about you join us for dinner in the hall today?” She asked as she made her way to the door.
“I don’t think so”, but before I could complete my sentence she smiled and said “Oh, it's not a choice. I will be back in an hour and we will go together.” And she bounced out of my room.
