Queen's Strike-Back Chapter 1: The Forgotten Princess The kingdom of Ardelia had always believed that its royal family was blessed by destiny. For centuries, the Golden Crown had passed from one ruler to another, protecting the people and keeping peace among the surrounding lands. But behind the shining palace walls, power was not always as beautiful as it appeared. Princess Elara knew this better than anyone. From the outside, she had everything a young princess could want: a magnificent palace, beautiful gardens, expensive dresses, and servants ready to fulfill her every request. Yet Elara often felt like a bird living inside a golden cage. Her father, King Aldric, was a respected ruler, but he had grown tired and ill over the years. The kingdom was increasingly managed by his younger brother, Lord Malric, who served as the royal adviser. Malric was clever, charming, and admired by many nobles. He always smiled when people were watching. He spoke softly and promised prosperity. But Elara had never trusted him. There was something cold behind his eyes. “Your Highness,” Malric would say whenever he saw her walking through the palace, “a princess should not worry herself with politics. Leave such difficult matters to those who understand them.” Elara would smile politely, but inside she burned with anger. She had studied history, law, strategy, and the problems facing ordinary people across Ardelia. She knew that villages near the northern mountains were struggling with poor harvests. She knew that merchants complained about unfair taxes. She knew that soldiers had not received proper supplies during the previous winter. She understood far more than Malric believed. But because she was young and because many people underestimated her, nobody listened. One evening, Elara stood on the balcony outside her room, watching the lights of the capital sparkle beneath the dark sky. Her closest friend and personal attendant, Mira, joined her. “You're thinking too much again,” Mira said. “I am thinking about the kingdom.” “That sounds dangerous.” Elara laughed softly. “Why?” “Because every time you think about the kingdom, you end up reading books until midnight and asking uncomfortable questions at breakfast.” “Someone has to ask them.” Mira leaned against the balcony railing. “Your father will recover. Things will become normal again.” Elara wanted to believe her. But deep inside, she knew that normal was already disappearing. The following morning, the palace bells rang. King Aldric had called an emergency council. Every important noble and commander gathered in the great hall. Elara sat beside her father's throne, listening carefully as reports were delivered. The news was troubling. Several villages had experienced food shortages, and a group of merchants claimed that royal officials were demanding additional payments. The king looked exhausted. “We will investigate these accusations,” he said weakly. Before anyone could speak again, Lord Malric stepped forward. “Your Majesty,” he said, bowing respectfully, “perhaps the kingdom requires stronger leadership during these difficult times.” The hall became silent. Elara looked at her uncle. Malric continued, “Your health must come first. I would be honored to accept additional responsibilities until you have fully recovered.” Several nobles immediately nodded. Elara felt a warning rise inside her. Her father looked uncertain. “Perhaps temporarily.” Malric smiled. It was a small victory. But it was only the beginning. Over the next few weeks, Malric gained more authority. He signed documents, appointed new officials, and began surrounding himself with loyal supporters. Anyone who questioned his decisions was quietly removed from their position. Elara tried to warn her father. “Something is wrong,” she said one evening in his private chambers. King Aldric looked sadly at his daughter. “Malric is my brother.” “That doesn't mean he cannot make mistakes.” “You are suspicious of him.” “I am observant.” Her father sighed. “You have always been strong-minded.” “Then listen to me.” For a moment, the king smiled. “I promise I will be careful.” But promises could not stop what was already moving through the palace like a shadow. One cold morning, the king suddenly became too ill to attend the council. By evening, Malric had declared himself Royal Protector of Ardelia. And by the end of the week, Princess Elara was no longer allowed to attend political meetings. Her world was becoming smaller. But she had not yet realized how much she was about to lose.
