CHAPTER 25 GREY STREET Lillian traipsed up Cora’s front path, which was bordered by a decorative low hedge, carrying the carefully wrapped dress firmly tucked beneath her arm. She pressed the bell and heard a tinkling melody ring out inside the house. Through the pane of glass she watched a silhouette approach and heard a squeal from a young child. When Cora’s housemaid opened the door, Lillian took a quick step back in shock. She stumbled on a small lawn ornament and almost dropped the package. The servant in question appeared equally taken aback. As Lillian tried to regain her dignity a furious war of emotions fought across the other woman’s face.
