CHAPTER 30 FORGIVENESS Archie swung the door open before Lillian even had a chance to knock. He gazed down at her solemnly before his face creased into a smile. ‘Ah, the prizefighter shows her face. Do I need to duck?’ She reddened and shuffled from foot to foot. ‘Archie, I’ve come to apologise to you and Cora for my appalling behaviour last night.’ He threw back his head with laughter and slapped his thighs with his palms as if her contrition was the funniest thing he’d ever heard. ‘Don’t bother! Who hasn’t had too many drinks and made a fool of themselves at least once in their life? You’ll find my wife in the drawing-room. I’m off to Tattersall’s.
