CHAPTER 31 DESPAIR Lillian grasped wildly at Catherine’s sleeve as she was led beyond the front gate. ‘Catherine, I –’ ‘Calm down, hen. I’ll have a word when she settles down. Yer cannae expect her to understand whit it was like. Yer’ve come up in this world, Lillian, but the past will always be there waiting to trip yer up.’ Lillian used her handkerchief to wipe her eyes and sniffed with self pity. ‘You don’t think I’m despicable? I know I think it about myself. I’ve held on to that secret for so long. Now that it’s out, I’ll probably lose everything.’ Catherine clutched Lillian’s shoulders and forced her to look up. ‘Why dinnae yer tell me about it the day it happened? I think I remember the one.
